Definitely it's one of the last pre-refurbishment 323's in the fleet.
They do need it desperately though. Would it simply just be a repaint and new LED's ? Or new panels needed too ?

I'm wondering if the refurb on the ex-WM 323s is awaiting the next C6 overhaul - this was last undertaken 2018-2020 - so must be coming back round again (6/7-year cycle)?

It's had quite a few things wrong with it including a leaking transformer. As these items are difficult to get hold of and take a while other bits have gone missing to keep the rest of the fleet running, so it has to now be rebuilt before coming back into service (currently estimated as 1st March).

Is it just possible as time goes on, due to the parts being hard and difficult to get hold of, for the 323s currently in active service at Northern, if not already done so, and as parts get even harder to get, or impossible to get, they might start using the parts and stripping the 323s currently in store at Long Marston, as parts donors,
I do wonder if Northern are not wanting to take the remaining 9, Would it be useful if they could start taking spares off them to keep the 34 with Northern going?

Looks much better now, I seem to recall it being one of the tatty ones due to graffiti damage ripping off some of the vinyl's which were never put back
That's surprising! In the run-down of the 323's on the Birmingham Crosscity line last year, you could tell which ones were going to Northern - they were the ones with USB charging points.
5 units never got completed, I'd imagine delivering the service was more important given the fleet was made smaller before a 730 even ran on the cross city.
That's a fair point, although when the first 730 entered service on 15th April, only four had transferred to Northern.
Thanks. There is usually a 323 on the Liverpool to Wigan stopper (Monday to Saturday) with a second one added post-peak from the Liv to Man Vic turn, but I don't think any are diagrammed for Liverpool to Blackpool work at the moment. Could 235's outing yesterday have been the first 323 on this service?
