IIRC you don't have to show your railcard to purchase a ticket but do have to show it at a ticket check.

If this is wrong, please delete.

I think the evidence from many previous discussions is that ticket office staff usually do insist on seeing the railcard at the time of sale, but especially so if the travel is for the same day.

When selling a ticket for immediate travel I would always ask to see the railcard. It not only gets around the fact that some people genuinely don't understand what a railcard is, it also enables a check that it is in date and is the railcard described. And that it hasn't been forgotten.

Phones and tablets can connect to wi-fi without SIM cards or contracts etc, so the smoke and mirrors nonsense regarding I was changing phone providers or service being disconnected from 4G etc does not stand up.

Do you not think that TIL staff may read these forums?!!!!!!
