Hi guys,

It's been about 2 years since I posted on here last time asking for information regarding the train driver training course - now that I have sucessfully completed all the stages of that, I'm back on here to ask for more advice!!

Quickly to the point then....!

Does anyone know anything about the degree offered by IRO (Bachelors in Railway Operational Management). Another option I have since I already have a degree would be to jump straight onto a Masters course in something like Transport and Business Management at Imperial College London.

I'm trying to keep my career options open, but I would definately like to remain on the railways. Just to add finally, I've got some experience in Train Planning and Transport Engineering and I somehow particularly enjoy maths and report writing (Strange - I know!)

Anyway, if anyone has completed a degree after starting work on the railways I'm interested in hearing about what the course was and how has it helped?!

....

Train driver course?
Please give more details.

Some will say an engineering degree or some sort will help although I would suggest this is one of those old fashioned BR requirements, modern trains these days are run by computers not mechanics.
However both will look good on a CV I should think.

Well, I guess after almost 300 views no one so far has actually done the degree offered by IRO - I guess I shall do some more digging around online!!

Anyway, thanks for reading - I'll check back every now and again to see if anyone else has commented.

I know someone who is doing it, but he is supported by his employer. From what I know of the IRO courses, you really would need you company to be "on board", as you will need the opportunity to gain exposure to areas of the business, that are not encountered by drivers. Control functions in particular.

I would suggest speaking to your managers, explain that you would like to progress into management in the future, and see what they suggest. If they have anything about them, they will assist. Meantime, remain focused on driving!
