Im supposed to be going from Glasgow to Edinburgh in a week or 2, but im not sure whether to travel from central or queen street, i would rather traveling through the E-G mainline but ill be coming into central from Ayr, i don't know if its better to walk to queen street or just go from central

From Queen Street you have two trains an hour taking 52-53 mins.

From Central you have one per hour taking 95+ mins.

Even if you arrive at Central from Ayr in time to make the next Shotts line service, it is still quicker to transfer to Queen Street and get the Express from there.

I'd go up to Queen Street personally, unless the walk would pose difficulties for you.

If you don't wish to walk, you can also take the station link bus. It leaves every twelve minutes from Union Street, just round the corner from Central (not from the forecourt as Google Maps says) and is timetabled to take six minutes to get to Queen Street. I believe it is often slower due to traffic but it saves the walk, just allow plenty of time. The bus is free if you have a through train ticket or a NEC card.

Definitely queen street - 7 or 8 car modern 385 unit which takes 45 - 50 minutes vs the same unit (so no material difference) taking twice as long on what I would say is a less scenic route.

If you can get to Central from Ayr in time, and have a suitable ticket, there are still a couple of fast services from Central to Edinburgh, LNER's 0648 and Cross Country's 0748.

For me it depends on the timings and where I want to be in Glasgow. Walking is fine but sometimes you can't be bothered. If just missing a faster service sometimes I want to get on a slower one that's about to depart and have a nap/do some work rather than wandering around for 25 minutes

That would require using the 0540 Ayr-Glasgow Central to catch either service and gives only 6 mins to catch the LNER, while leaving a 66 min wait for the XC. For the former its quite likely one could miss it, for the XC - you'd be better off transferring to Queen Street anyway!

True of course, but hopefully one day Scotrail will restore a proper service........
