Hi all, I'm looking for a collective list of quay side stations to browse through (those also no longer in service included).

Of the top of my head I can think of Weymouth Quay, Kyle of Lochalsh.. I'd be super interested in having some names to look at..

Hoping this will make an interesting thread for others to read!

Harwich International, formerly known as Parkeston Quay. There are twice daily sailings to the Hook of Holland (and in the past there were passenger routes to Denmark, Sweden and Germany).

There were loads, including some inland on lakes/lochs. E.g. Lakeside (Windermere) and Balloch Pier.

Marine ones included New Holland Pier, Craigendoran Pier, Holyhead (now rather retreated from), Dover Marine/Western Docks, Tilbury Riverside, Barry Pier and Port Victoria.

Still extant include Heysham Harbour, Stranraer Harbour (but no ships), Gourock and Wemyss Bay (depending on how 'quay side' is to be defined).

Way to go!

Portsmouth Harbour station built out on a pier... look down through the tracks and you'll see the sea! The Wightlink ferries dock at the buffer end of the station.

Portpatrick station lasted a lot longer than Portpatrick Harbour station. The Harbour station (at the end of a remarkably inconvenient steeply graded spur) was only open for traffic for a few years in the 1860s before the plans for using Portpatrick as a principal harbour for Irish mail services were abandoned in favour of Stranraer.

Also in SW Scotland, the Cairnryan Military Railway ran to the jetties constructed at Cairnryan during WW2 though this was never a regular passenger route. A connection sadly now lost, seeing that all the ferry traffic has moved from Stranraer to Cairnryan.

Thanks for this historic one! Certainly excited to take a look at this

Liverpool Riverside. Closed in 1971 but oddly still shows up in some journey planners/booking systems.

Already mentioned but just a little more

Ramsgate Harbour closed 1926. Would be easier to get to now for quite a few of us locals (including me!). Ramsgate Station is a fair walk uphill from the town although there is a very good bus service

Folkestone Harbour closed 2001. There were plans/suggestions for a heritage railway for the spur from Folkestone. AIUI the platforms were renovated and now (or did) hold kiosks/food outlets etc

Pembroke Dock is (comparatively) nowhere near the sea. I’d also say Mallaig is a bit far inland to count as quayside.

Boats dock next to both Portsmouth Harbour and Fishguard Harbour stations.

Southend Pier, with its own railway leading to pleasure steamers which used to call at the seaward end (and when the Waverley paddle steamer does so, still happens).

No one has mentioned Cobh, County Cork. Once an important departure point for the trans Atlantic Liner trade.

Station is still there and proves very useful for cruise ship passengers who want to explore themselves rather than use the over priced coach excursions. Cobh is a popular cruise destination.

The station was tastefully restored to period appearance in the 1990s with an interesting exhibition of the former trade and trans Atlantic immigration. Also gift shop and cafe.

Nearby is the former loco depot which around 20 years ago was converted into a Garda Station. The old depot forms the basement and the new building sits inside it's walls but is much taller and has been styled to somewhat resemble a ship.

Not certain that North Woolwich comes under the OP's criteria. It never reached the riverside - the Great Eastern's pier was separated from the station by a road.

You beat me to it :) I lived a stone's throw away from it (at opposite end of Victoria Gardens) for 6 years. The old GER pier was still there, albeit dilapidated.
I visited the GER building and former platforms when it was used as a railway museum.
