Wasn't the town named after the pub, not the station?
The Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway built a station in (Little) Marsden, Lancashire in 1849. Because they already had a Marsden station in Yorkshire they called it Nelson Inn Station after the nearby pub. This caused some confusion and the growing town was then named after the station.

'The area was previously described as “a peat covered and rain sodden wilderness”.' Still half true!

Clarbeston Road was a settlement built round the station of that name and is now bigger than Clarbeston. Same applies to Halwill Junction and Widdrington Station already mentioned.
