Unusual Checker-Board sign at Chester-le-Street station (CLS)

I spotted this at Chester-le-Street station a few weeks ago. It is the black-and-white diagonal 2x2 checker-board, attached to an electrification/headspan girder/stanchion/upright on the northbound platform, towards the southbound end. I was wondering what its purpose is:
