How offensive to Tesco! :D (Tesco are - in my opinion - the best supermarket in the UK, especially when you know how to lawfully play the T&C's of all their "schemes"!)

I would say Northern are the ASDA of the rail industry. (Asda are - in my opinion - the worst supermarket in the UK!)

And what's so special about M&S uniforms? Maybe Virgin are the Harrod's of the rail industry? Perhaps not - that's a bit snooty and expensive. Virgin are the John Lewis of the rail industry then (great service, not always cheap, sometimes very cheap, but nice overall)!

oooo! Sounds fancy! :D

I was actually thinking it was an unsult to Northern. Tesco= cheap tat. Ive never found Northern to be that. If anything they are the Sainsburys. Reasonably priced and usually good, but always reasonable. Virgin are the coca cola of the rail industry....................

To be honest, you can't really compare TOCs to supermarkets. Regarding supermarkets, the big 4 all seem virtually the same to me, very generic! The "posh" ones aren't all that fantastic either. Many of the products are from the same supplier, put in different packaging! Someone I know used to work in a crisp factory and on one line, all they would do is change the packets for M&S, Tesco and Sainsbury's!

Airlines is a different story;)

Northern are generally excellent and the vast majority of their staff are professional and very friendly. The only thing that lets them down is some of the stock but you can't put all the blame on them for that. I would happily grant Northern a new franchise for another 10 years provided that they invest a bit more money on ticketing facilities and cleaned up some of their 150's as well as maximising seating arrangements on them

I agree, Northern do a decent job of working with what they've got! Other TOCs have new stock, or new stock on the horizon, Northern has got the prospect of more hand-me-down pacers, 150s and 319s to deal with.

Tesco are NOT cheap tat! I have saved a good few hundred pounds on my grocery shopping since January by taking advantage of their "schemes." ;)

I must take issue with you about cheap tat! Even Mrs Greenback finds the meat at Tesco to be horrible ,she refuses toe at it! So even if we could save money by going there it wouldn;t be much of a saving if most of what we bought ends up in the bin and we had to go and buy something else! :D

On the other hand, I got a nice suit there and it hasn't fallen to pieces yet, and I'v ehad it for three years...

Apart from when some TOCs get their managers from supermarkets...

Not really relevant, "'good" managers can transfer between industries, it's completely normal. Whether it's best to hire someone who has experience in a specific industry is another debate..

Anyway, probably best not to turn this thread into a debate about the pros and cons of different supermarkets....:p

I agree completely. Morrisons and Tesco are cheap for good reason. I'll never buy meat from them.

Double the difference? ;)

Yes, and loopholes in the Tesco Clubcard scheme. I've got £100's of pounds of free train tickets thanks to Tesco Clubcard, and I only spent a few quid! :D

I agree that Tesco's meat is, on the whole, very poor quality (like Asda), and a lot of it ends up in the bin. Many times I've had chicken that goes off before the use by date on the packaging! Tesco are also terrible for fresh bread (like Asda). I shop at Sainsbury's for most of my meat and bread. The only good meat items you can buy from Tesco are: Willow Farm whole chicken, "Finest" whole chicken, and "Healthy living" chicken breasts.

Agreed, I noticed it with chocolate truffles before Christmas.

Tesco's version of Asda's price guarantee backfired on them though when everyone started claiming! I don't care for clubcard points, nectar points etc. Give me good old-fashioned cash which is infinitely more transferable.

Anyone noticed that the East Coast uniforms are just former stockpiled National Express Bus Drivers' shirts?

I have to say, I agree. But it doesn't bother me, as East Coast are excellent.

Indeed, in fact they still look smart with the grey shirts. Will post a phot of mine next Sunday after I've worked one of the 'Forth Circle' tours

Enjoy! Which tour are you doing? I'll be taking my next East Coast trip in May.

Have a good trip then! I've only ever seen a 60007 on Trainz! :)

I'll probably be down at Stevenage sooner rather than later, photographing the HSTs, and as East Coast trains use Stevenage as a key stop on their route, I might be able to get the uniforms as well. ;)
