That's the same as the S&C today, near enough!
Yeah, but a) the S&C (to Leeds) is 15 miles or so longer and current trains make no pretence about being an inter-city service, stopping about 15? times on the journey, not only 5.

Maybe the line speed in its last years was only 60 mph? I had an LMR rover ticket back in July 1968. Really wish I'd used the opportunity to go on the Waverley, but of course, that meant buying a return ticket, and money was short.

Gosh, that timetable shows how slow the route was.

I mean "The Waverley" took 2 hr 27 minutes for the 98 miles.

That's an average speed of 40 mph. OK, it had 5 stops, but it was also Cl 45 hauled by then. The line speed can only have been, what, 70 mph max?
70mph was the highest. There was only one such stretch, most of the route was only 50-60 with various restrictions for curves and through certain stations.

Maybe the line speed in its last years was only 60 mph? I had an LMR rover ticket back in July 1968.
It was 70mph until closed, ironically linespeed had been increased slightly (and a few PSRs eased) for the dieselisation of through expresses in the late-50s.
