It seems the 321s are safe.

Varamis Rail CEO Phil Read from Rail Magazine last year "The ‘325s’ are not off the table for us - we believe there are huge opportunities for them. Our ten trains will soon be needed to meet our needs just on the West Coast Main Line, so we will need more trains to serve the East Coast Main Line. The ‘325s’ also have third-rail capability as well as 25kV AC. That is a huge attraction to us, and could open up new markets, such as Portsmouth."

Maybe totally unrelated but 5Z41 is three Varamis rail 321's heading to Wembley. It is possible they are picking up the 325's to tow back north? Passing the Crewe webcam at about 09:50.

Varamis also have a maintenance facility at Wembley InterCity Depot so I suspect 5Z41 is unrelated to the 325s

On the topic of Varamis, they seem to have 10 trains and only use 1 or 2 for actual revenue-earning duties. How have they now justified buying 6 more trains?

325s can only be dragged by locos and other 325s as they don’t have automatic couplers.

It was mentioned on this site some time ago that the DC shoe gear has been removed from the 325s, but that the on board DC equipment is still understood to be intact.

There isn’t a lot of DC equipment beyond the shoegears. All of the AC/DC changeover circuitry is still intact.

I really feel as though this guy talks a good game but the reality is very different
