It’s when, not if.The 350/2s
I doubt GWR would need them, they have enough commuter trains, some of the excess has gone to GTR.The 350/2s
Am I right in thinking that the 350/1s have had their 3rd rail pickup shoes removed, so that they can only currently work on 25kV overhead?
They're isolated AFAIK. They still have the equipment, given that there are still differences in the bogies between the 350/1s and other 350s.
I’m sure I remember a spirited debate on here about whether the shoes were just isolated or whether they were removed and stored in a cupboard in Northampton depot. Saying that, I can’t remember how it endedI've been searching for recent photos of 350/1s and it looks like they still have the beams for 3rd rail shoes, but the actual pickup shoes are now absent.
You cannot easily see them in their raised position, I took a couple of photos only a few years ago and the shoes and arms were still fitted but very difficult to see. They’re not visible looking from the side, you have to look from above, ie behind the shoe beam..I've been searching for recent photos of 350/1s and it looks like they still have the beams for 3rd rail shoes, but the actual pickup shoes are now absent.
Prehaps I'm just unlucky but I keep finding myself on doubled up 350/2 units to LTV, I think I'm getting Stockholm syndrome to them units as on a quiet run they ain't too bad especially when I have a suitcase with me, although I am excited for the new units my local station is due to receive,
Fit them with batteries and 3rd rail plus with more electrification around Bristol they'd be good for Cardiff to Portsmouth hbr services but would need the seats layout changedI doubt GWR would need them, they have enough commuter trains, some of the excess has gone to GTR.
Thanks for that. Next time I'm at Stafford I'll take a good look at one.You cannot easily see them in their raised position, I took a couple of photos only a few years ago and the shoes and arms were still fitted but very difficult to see. The 350/4s were refurbished a few years ago now (2020 or 2021), right after the 350/1s, though the /4s had less done in standard class than the /1s.I rode examples of 350/3 and 350/4 units for my London visit on Wednesday/Thursday. Both had been refurbished and had grey seats like the 350/1. I also sampled a 350/2 which inevitably still had green seats, as it is soon to go off lease.
This had probably been documented, but I had not seen the news about the 350/3 and 350/4s being refurbished.
Interesting to learn when these refurbs happened. Thanks for letting me know. The 350/4s were refurbished a few years ago now (2020 or 2021), right after the 350/1s, though the /4s had less done in standard class than the /1s.
The 350/3s were refurbished beginning in October last year.
