So, does that mean at a short platform such as Kildale, a 4 car DMU would draw up at the platform in such a way that carriage numbers two and three are then located immediately alongside the platform, but carriage numbers one and four mostly wouldn't be?

Yeah, that is correct mate.

The driver would just drive past the end of the platform to ensure the conductor can open the doors safely.

Four carriage 156's both ways yesterday. Probably the pleasantest journey I've had on the route for some time. The trains were gratifyingly busy but not overcrowded.

It begs the question, why did it take a global pandemic !

Excellent news !

Busy train today, although not so much as two weeks ago.

Four carriages deffinately needs to stay for the March bank holidays - Autumn end of summer period.

I made a journey on the Esk Valley a few weeks ago (did Newcastle-Whitby then hopped back up to Middlesbrough on the same unit) and south of Middlesbrough it was busier than any other train I'd been on that day, and likewise for the return. It was chucking it down at Whitby too, so clearly there's demand for travel to/from there even with the pandemic going on.

I presume the train in platform 1 was top & tailed? If memory serves me correctly only platform 2 line has the runaround connected.

Presumably, if the train into P2 arrives first, it could run round its train and then attach to the front of the P1 train after that arrives.

P1 train then departs first and releases its engine to couple train in P2.

P2 train departs first, then the P1 shunts to P2, then runs round.

Near where the 3 ridings meet
I think that the use of the old run round siding is also in the mix.
P2 platform first plus regular runround on P2 then next train into P1.
P1 Set back into siding and runround.
P1 now free for regular Northern service.
