Why does Malton have one platform?

To cater for or this I have added an alternative idea to my pdf, Concept B, with the existing platform #1 reconfigured as a bay for the terminators, and the new extension #2 as the bidirectional Scarborough platform. To save new turnouts I've removed the up through line.

Is there not a trade off to be had between the cost of building a simple platform on the up line, complete with a footbridge to the existing platform (with ramps rather than costly lifts?), offset by the savings by simply eliminating all the existing pointwork (and that proposed in your options)? This would also of course eliminate the conflict between up and down trains.

At Castleford all services reverse and when the Huddersfield arrives after any passengers get off it moves further down the platform. The next service due is a Leeds to Sheffield which then pulls in obviously stopping short of the 153 for Huddersfield.
After the Sheffield is away the 153 pulls back a bit and then leaves 4 minutes later.
When the Hudersfield service first started it was going up one of the Knottingley lines and waiting there for the Sheffield to clear but for some reason this has ceased.

Yes, and when I witnessed this recently all the passengers joined the Sheffield train and the Huddersfield left empty, which I suspect must happen a lot.
A problem with only having one platform is if the Sheffield is running late then the Huddersfield is blocked in and also departs late which makes it late at Thornhill with consequent knock on effects on the Transpennine services.

Apologies for continuing the off-topic (this will be it, I promise!) but the change to arrangements at Casvegas with the Huddersfield service is a big improvement for crews. Initially with reversing out to the Glasshoughton curve and back meant drivers having to change ends three times in quick succession, rather than just once with the permissive working that's been introduced now. If the Sheffield was late with the old arrangement it would still cause the same delay anyway.

Providing a second platform at Malton should be a no-brainer really, and lifts aren't necessarily more costly than ramps. Low Moor has lifts rather than ramps and that isn't even staffed!

Need a housing development to the immediate south and southeast of the station that chips in for a second platform and southern entrance to the station (which would mean passengers from the south wouldn’t have to use the level crossing)

A man who lives adjacent to the signal complained about it and went as far as hosepiping trains and going down to the station to confront drivers. Safer to use permissive working in the end. Why buy a house by a railway if you don’t like the noise it makes. I’m pretty sure the railway was there first.

Sounds like a typical Castleford resident, never slow to let people know their opinion.

Well,it can't be that expensive to build that new platform, the only problem is that you might want to add provision for a Whitby via Pickering line reopening, I wonder how much that would cost?
