Why were some class 03s numbered in the 3xx range?

I'd forgotten about this, until I picked up an old copy of Rail, which was talking about (preserved) 03399 being the highest numbered 03, but by no means the last built.

Any ideas why some were numbered in the 300s, despite only 230 being built?

When they were built they were numbered D2000 to D2199 and then from D2370 to D2399. The class 04s were numbered D2200 to D2341 so the 03s couldnt take these numbers.

I would image that it was deemed best to carry forward the last three digits in addition to '03' than renumbering half the fleet.
