Aldi and Lidl often open stores near the longer-established ones. Locally, both have relocated to be even closer to Sainsbury's and Tesco within the last couple of years.
Ah right, this centre surprised me as on the ground floor it has only around 15 retailers, this unit will be right there as you enter & Sainsbury’s at the rear about a 10 second stride. Gone are the days I suppose of any local rules & regs regarding competing that close with similar product offerings.

Although coffee shops as an example trade next to each other as do other retailers & funnily enough Starbucks & Pret trade side by side in the centre.

The two I mentioned were brand new buildings on brownfield sites so definitely went through the planning process. I'm typing this in the middle one of three pubs right next door to each other with a fourth one an arcade entrance and empty shop away.

Getting back to Wilko, I believe the Wilkinson family are fighting any attempt to make up any of the deficit in the pension scheme.

The former ultimate owner of discount retail chain Wilko does not expect to have to help plug the high street chain’s estimated £70.2mn pension hole following its collapse a year ago.

Amalgamated Holdings Wilkinson Limited, the ultimate parent of Wilko that is owned by the founding family, said in new documents that its directors, including former chair Lisa Wilkinson, “do not believe there is a liability for AHWL in respect to any [pension] deficit arising” after they sought legal advice.

Thanks for keeping it on topic.
Obviously there’s a general supermarket thread below for everything else:

The former Wilko’s in the Frenchgate shopping centre in Doncaster is now a Boyes store.

I wonder how much large premises in town centres cost the company. Two that I know in such situations are those in Altrincham and in Wythenshawe.
UPDATE

The former store in Altrincham was soon taken over by Poundland, but the former store in Wythenshawe Town Centre shopping precinct, one of the largest retail premises in that complex is just still an empty shell still.

The Wilko in Llandudno remains empty. I can't see it being a candidate to reopen as their is a large in town Poundland and the usual discounters pretty much next door

The Wilko in Prospect centre in Hull is still empty, their store on Hessle Road was taken over by Poundland. The Scunthorpe store has been taken over by OneBeyond

Wilko in Livat Hammersmith is still empty, the exterior signs are still there but it has been boarded up with the shopping centres branding.

The next shop to reopen has been today announced as in Uxbridge, due to be “opening this Autumn.”

A bit exciting for me personally as this was my local branch of Wilko, and there are no branches of The Range easily accessible, the nearest being in Slough, Watford or Hemel Hempstead, all of which are about a half hour drive away.

Took my neighbour to the reopening this morning. Shop was packed and from the photos on social media there was a massive queue before 9am so I missed out on the goodie bags.

Heard a few people grumbling that there was too much Christmas stuff; it seemed to take up most of the lower basement level, if anything this is possibly a good sign as hopefully they’ll fill it up with the gardening stuff the rest of the year.
