Why is this station so ridiculous? There's a huge, attractive train shed and yet 2 or 3 car turbos stop on a single uncovered platform a long way from the town centre and even then quite a way from the buffers. Passengers get soaked when it rains.

I completely agree. There is an awning there, but because there is only one bank of DOO monitors, two car trains have to stop close to the platform end. (Can be seen in this pic: http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/stations/sjp/WNC/images/photos/800/o3431-0000015.jpg).

I don't know if 4 car trains ever run there, but it is a bit annoying and somewhat silly IMO that even though there is an awning there, let alone the trainshed/shopping centre, it rarely gets used.

That shopping centre is the original station, when they closed it and relocated the station, the station we get today is the result!!!

Windsor & Eton needs both stations expanded. With the advent of Crossrail 1 & 2, both of them should be crossrail termini, which, given the huge tourist draw that Windsor Castle & legoland are, would be a boon for the town.

You used to walk through past the shops, up the ramp and come out right opposite the Castlle. Can't you do that now?

Last time I went you could, the worst bit is between the end of the end of the platform where the train stops and the shops/ticket office area though - overlooking some noisy coach park IIRC!

Felixstowe is similar- the old station building is now a shopping centre, then there's a car park, then a single side of the old platform is used by (mainly) single 153s- though with a section of attractive old canopy.

It is so depressing when a lovely old station becomes a shopping 'paradise' while one track is left squeezed in at the side.

Or like St Ives, where a 'new' station has been built which looks so isolated in the middle of a huge car park.
