Doesn't the crossover between the fast lines face the wrong way which will require a double reversal to access the up fast from the down fast?SLW Winchfield to Basingstoke anyone ?
2tph max

As the landslip is on the Up side, you could route Up trains onto the Down fast at Basingstoke then back over to the Up fast at Winchfield without reversal, although the crossover at Winchfield may need staff to secure it, and you wouldn't be able to get to the Up slow until Farnborough.Doesn't the crossover between the fast lines face the wrong way which will require a double reversal to access the up fast from the down fast?

Ah, fair enough, in which case yes it's a double reversal to shunt across at Winchfield. I'd misread the press reports.Down side
The trailing crossover at Winchfield has been used many times, for SLW in connection with engineering work. It used to require a flagman, but now has the benifit of simbids. As the landslip is on the Up side, you could route Up trains onto the Down fast at Basingstoke then back over to the Up fast at Winchfield without reversal, although the crossover at Winchfield may need staff to secure it, and you wouldn't be able to get to the Up slow until Farnborough.
Top of the head thought, Farnborough slightly easier.Doesn't the crossover between the fast lines face the wrong way which will require a double reversal to access the up fast from the down fast?
Hopefully the DF can be reinstated reasonably quickly and would be good to see some joined up inter-regional thinking to divert to Reading where needed to offer a further connection to LondonIt’s a real shame that this has happened - SWML passengers have really suffered the last few days. However it will be very interesting what timetables SWR manage to think of and decide to run tomorrow and for the following weeks. Without reversals it will be a two track railway Woking - Basingstoke.
Hopefully by Wednesday they will have sorted out a way to run 2tph on their remaining two lines…. And in the meantime if they can get 1tph from Salisbury into Reading from tomorrow morning that would be a way to minimise the damagel
Surely on the DS they can run unrestricted the DF will presumably used for SLW and 2tph should be manageable although Winchfield will be too close to site of works. DF looks like a bit of fettling and 5ESR could make it runnable depends on how stable the rest of the embankment is but does look like its the add on for four tracking thats failed and not the original embankment from the video. It’s a real shame that this has happened - SWML passengers have really suffered the last few days. I imagine the DF will be part of the worksite even if it is passable.Surely on the DS they can run unrestricted the DF will presumably used for SLW and 2tph should be manageable although Winchfield will be too close to site of works. At least it happened whilst the line was under a T3 could have caused a nasty incident if it had failed under traffic.
Initially they will have to stabilise the embankment with a cofferdam at the toe before they restore the formation so could use it for several days but with planning being such a constraint these days easier just to put in place a plan using SLW over the DF for the duration and see what else they can divert.I imagine the DF will be part of the worksite even if it is passable.
It’s the down side that has the landslip, the down slow is in mid air and it will be the down fast that’s not fully supported. Both down lines are blocked with an engineers train (6G14) parked on the up fast according to the opentraintimes maps at the time of this posting.I imagine the DF will be part of the worksite even if it is passable.
It's probably a push button motored ground frame now, but I'm pretty sure there's no bidirectional signalling, simplified or otherwise, between Basingstoke and Woking unfortunately. The trailing crossover at Winchfield has been used many times, for SLW in connection with engineering work. Sending all the Salisbury line trains to Reading would be a good idea. The only problem might be platform availability for longer Exeter trains. I'd guess the shorter ones could use platform 3.Is there the capacity to send the Salisbury stoppers up to Reading as per the weekends to connect in to GWR?
there isn't have to be ticket working i guessIt's probably a push button motored ground frame now, but I'm pretty sure there's no bidirectional signalling, simplified or otherwise, between Basingstoke and Woking unfortunately.
Do SWR sign that route to Reading?Sending all the Salisbury line trains to Reading would be a good idea. The only problem might be platform availability for longer Exeter trains. I'd guess the shorter ones could use platform 3.
Yes, they ran that way yesterday (Salisbury - Reading Shuttle) whilst its been shut this weekendDo SWR sign that route to Reading?
Yes. It was first done during the 2017 Waterloo remodelling, but there’s been a Sunday morning and afternoon service since, and some late evening route learners during the normal weekday timetable.Do SWR sign that route to Reading?
There are regular weekend workings.Do SWR sign that route to Reading?
The route has been learnt by some Salisbury crews recently in addition to the Basingstoke crews who already sign it so it should be possible to crew a decent service to Reading, especially with the Basingstoke stoppers cancelled.Yes. Whether enough drivers are in date would be another question though.
…the whole timetable is really quite dependent on the local TME (No pressure!) allowing the DFL reopening with an ESR in the morning. More than sure I will find out when my other half wakes me up at 530 to help her navigate her journey to work !! For me, being totally selfish, I’m fine until later this weekBasingstoke stoppers are gone completely.
Southampton/Pompey via Winchester loose Fleet, Hook and Winchfield but retain Farnborough.
Weymouths look to remain on the Main as Pompey line said to be running normal service tomorrow.
So looks like an attempt at 4tph in each direction.
I don't know the area well, but I have a vague recollection that many years ago I was on a service disrupted by planned works which left Woking platform 2, and went wrong line down the up fast all the way to Basingstoke. I know its not signaled to do it but is it physically possible? or my memory playing tricks again!
The pictures seem to show a fair bit of the ballast missing from under the DFL. There is also the possibility of more rain...…the whole timetable is really quite dependent on the local TME (No pressure!) allowing the DFL reopening with an ESR in the morning. That picture featured in 'British Railway Track', the handbook produced by the Permanent Way Institution.I can remember leaflets out at Taunton in the 1960s (!) about a "Hook Landslip", even more severe than today's and which I think went on for weeks. It had a grainy black & white photo of track suspended over the void which looked very like the current one, apart from having a Bulleid Pacific creeping past on the far side.
In this case seems slightly OTT for SWR to avoid against all but essenital travel tomorrow for eg Basingstoke to Waterloo given only a handful of trains are cancelled (looks like 4tph to me?), unless NRE is not up to date right now?Basingstoke stoppers are gone completely.

I would advise same as can’t see DFL open tomorrow to be fair.In this case seems slightly OTT for SWR to avoid against all but essenital travel tomorrow for eg Basingstoke to Waterloo given only a handful of trains are cancelled (looks like 4tph to me?), unless NRE is not up to date right now?
