Good Morning, I stay in Norfolk, but go to Ely and Cambridge regularly, but I hardly see a 2 Car XC170. Whereabouts is the best place to see the 2 Car 170s. For the record I have only seen 170113, 170114, 170519 and 170520. I do go to Peterborough also on occasions.

Any help would be appreciated

Best Wishes

Jonathan Anderson

I got on a 2 car AGA 170 service to Cambridge early Saturday morning once.

But sorry, as far as XC goes I've never used the operator.

08:21 Stansted Airport - Birmingham New Street
09:21 Stansted Airport - Birmingham New Street
17:27 Stansted Airport - Birmingham New Street
18:21 Stansted Airport - Birmingham New Street
19:21 Stansted Airport - Birmingham New Street

05:19 Birmingham New Street - Stansted Airport
13:22 Birmingham New Street - Stansted Airport
14:22 Birmingham New Street - Stansted Airport
15:22 Birmingham New Street - Stansted Airport
19:22 Birmingham New Street - Stansted Airport

Otherwise, travelling to Birmingham will be your best bet if you're prepared to do that.

They also appear on Birmingham New Street and Nottingham to Cardiff Central services.

You get a mixture of 170/1s and 170/5s.

If you're interested, there's a 2x 2 car XC 170 booked into Birmingham on the 08:30 Cardiff Central and the 12:49 Nottingham, which runs every weekday as far as I'm aware.

The 12:22 Birmingham to Stansted Airport on a Sunday normally throws up a pair of 2car units.

Although if you want a good spotting session, a good place would be at Water Orton, as you get both services bound for Leicester & Nottingham travelling through, with a visit to New Street to pick up any hot spares.

Pretty sure the 0807 from Notts so the 0930 from Birmingham to Cardiff, 1145 back to Notts, 1541 to Brum and 1719 Nottingham are 2x2car as well

Do you know which services on the Nottingham side are booked 2 car? I know which ones to avoid mostly but it would be good to receive confirmation :)

07:49, 11:19, 13:19, 15:19 and 17:39 from Birmingham New Street - note the 17:39 terminates at Derby, runs ECS to Birmingham and forms the 20:22 to Cambridge
07:45, 09:45, 16:45, 18:45 Cardiff Central to Nottingham
06:00, 07:04, 09:41, 11:41, 13:10, 13:41, 15:10 & 17:10 departures from Nottingham (you're probably aware xx:10 are Cardiff services, xx:41 are Birmingham).

The 4-car diagram is the 07:04 Nottingham - Cardiff, 10:45 Cardiff - Nottingham, 14:41 Nottingham - Birmingham, 16:19 Birmingham - Nottingham, 18:10 Nottingham to Cardiff, if anyone's interested

My source for these is a station working book for Birmingham New Street, covering early 2015, and obtained by an FOI request by someone else - very little has changed on the Nottingham & Stansted routes in that time period so these are likely to still be accurate. As ever substitutions can occur, particularly the 17:39 New Street - Derby which can be a 220.

Thanks - think my 0807 diagram is out of date then! Although I'm fairly sure the 1739 was a 3 car 170 when I saw it idling in Derby the other week, must've been a set swap

Very probably, it should be the 2-car set that's the hot spare at New Street, although if that's needed it will be whatever XC have spare.

Although there are 2 car and 3 car diagrams in practise either can turn up if needs be. So don't rely on any particular service will be 2 or 3 cars.
The 4 car diagram posted above still runs but one set is knocked off at Birmingham on the 1810 Nottingham - Cardiff and goes ECS to TYS
