I have had an e-mail that looks as though it comes from yahoo (I am with yahoo.co.uk) that says I should check whether I am on the old version of the server, or whatever it is, by logging in to a site that it gives a link to. Supposedly the old version is shutting down today and failure to do so within 48 hours could lead to a shut down of my account. Is this genuine?

I have managed to work out that it is from a personal account (initial-first name-family name) at a UK aol address. It is the very short notice that struck me as particularly odd: it only arrived today.

Classic scammer technique. Put you under pressure so you don't stop and think about how odd this whole thing is. See also the avalanche of "YOUR NI NUMBER HAS BEEN LINKED TO FRAUD AND A CASE OPENED AGAINST YOU PRESS 1 TO SPEAK TO AN OPERATOR NOW OR WE WILL FREEZE YOUR BANK ACCOUNTS!" type messages that were going around this time last year. Anything they can do to try and get you to switch off your logical reasoning and therefore increase the chance you'll fall for the trick.

Well, yes, the scammers want you to panic enough about it that you'll just click the link and give them your details. If they told you it's not happening for a month you might go looking into whether it's legit or not.
