Your favourite Indian restaurant and why?

As a major fan of Indian food, or should I say "Westernised food from the Indian sub-continent", I have visited many a restaurant from as far north as Lerwick (the UK's most northerly) to as far south as just off Charing Cross Road, as far west as Aberystwyth, to as far east as Great Yarmouth.

I've been to some great ones, and some awful ones, as I'm sure most of you who also like Indian food can probably relate to.

Where's your favourite restaurant and why?

Mine has to be what used to be called Khan Saab, in Whitefield, Manchester. Their curries were sensational, their raita had a kick to it, the place was nicely decorated, and the staff were fantastic.

Used to be the Tandoori Mahal then Spice in Leeds. Now both in the history books.

Both had good food and very friendly service.

Drummond Street near Euston in London is well known for good Indian restaurants. Can't vouch for it myself, but I've heard many good things.

Currently I'm partial to a lamb saag from my local, the shama in Beeston. Failing that the nazz in Mansfield Woodhouse, and the one near the cathedral in lincoln are both good!

The Gulshan in South Liverpool, Aigburth. Why? It does amazing food and is not far from where I live. I used to love this little place in Bradford called Shabina, don't think it is still going, Kashmir was good as well.

Oh, and the Fort Of India in Newton Le Willows. Amazing.

Curry Kuteer in Stafford has good food.

Orient Express buffet in Rotherham (in old Masborough station buildings). Excellent food, good service and location has memories! Used to watch trains from the waiting room, now restaurant.

Pushkar in Birmingham City Centre on Broad Street is fantastic as a treat; lovely food, very stylish interior and impeccable service. Don't normally look at TripAdvisor for restaurants, but it gets almost flawless reviews.

Theres's also numerous others near where I live which are very decent.

Remember though that most "Indian" restaurants are actually Bangladeshi!

Drummond Street near Euston in London is well known for good Indian restaurants. Can't vouch for it myself, but I've heard many good things.

I visited a very nice vegetarian Indian resturant near Euston station late last year although I can't remember the name of it, might be the same one? Anyway they did an all you can eat lunch at a very reasonable price and the food was superb

About 25 years ago I was taken to a place near the back of the Merry Hill Centre by a colleague and frankly I thought I was going to catch the plague.

Now I've eaten some **** in ****holes in my time but....lino on the tables, mesh on the windows, there was once a carpet....but....the food was amazing. The best Balti I've ever had.

Turn's out it was where all the chefs and waiters went to eat from the area.

"Go with an open mind and you'll never be disappointed" was the lesson learnt.

Chutneys was good there on Thursday evening and this is coming from someone who isn't really into Indian food

Prashad..vegetarian Indian restaurant in Bradford, tho' they have moved premesis since I went there a couple of years ago. I've realised that I am not a fan of 'westernised' Indian food, so if I can find somewhere that is more authentic, witha decent vegetarian menu, I am happy!

Where is Prashad in Bradford? I lived there for four years in the mid to late 90's and I'm sure that name rings a bell!

it was on one of Gordon Ramsay's tv programmes a couple of years ago.
Since then they seem to have moved out of Bradford to bigger premises and massively increased their prices.

Ahhh! Thats the one. Horton Grange Road, I lived just down the road from it. Ha ha. Really good.

I haven't tried Yukti. It isn't too far from where I live but is a bit awkward to get to by public transport fro mine and isn't on one of my regular commutes. Lazy I know.

There is a really good Sri Lankan and Southern Indian restaurant on Kensington called Lakshaya. The Sri Lankan lads I used to work with all ate there which was a good sign before I tried it.

One of the best I've had is the MaCh at North Greetwell, just outside of Lincoln. Rather surprisingly it's located at the side of a petrol station, in a former Little Chef - but the food and service were impeccable. Just a shame you have to drive to get to it!

I've also never had a bad meal at Amers in Retford, small and cozy - great service too!

The best I have had is The Mint Room in Bath. More expensive than what I'd like to pay for an Inidian, but very very nice.

Would all depend on what sort of Indian cuisine I would be eating at. Neo India down in Crystal palace is ace

If you're in Exeter I'd strongly recommend the Dani Pani Indian restaurant on Sidwell Street. Impeccable service and the curries there are probably of the standard served in a top Indian restaurant in London. There's also a good Indian restaurant on South Street too.

In London Raavi's Kebab House (on Drummond Street, about 5 minutes walk from Euston) is good too, although it's more of a cafe than a restaurant

I Used to go to a good Indian in Sheerness High Street, they did a great Madras Curry. There used to be a very good Indian too around the Middlesex Street area, not far from Liverpool Street Station.

I think it's either in Birmingham or Bradford that there are a large number of Indian eateries in one area which is called the Ring of Fire or the Curry Ring or something similar.

Although it's only 915 am. Reading this, I quite fancy something hot and spicy.

Mumtaz is brilliant. Again I lived down the road from it. Amazing.

The flavours and cooking generally are delicious, but I always find they have much too much salt.
We are lucky in Ilkley to have three fine restaurants, Agraah, Panache, and Seema's. I go to the first for eating out, and alternate between the others for takeaway. Seema's is only 50 yards from the station.

We are well served by excellent Indian (sic) restuarants in this area. There is the award winning Sheesh Mahal in Llanelli, and the Ali Raj just outside of town is also very popular and highly regarded.

In Swansea there is the legendary Anarkali, which has been consistently excellent for the 26 years I've been going there.

That would either be Jala Jala (Mumtaz fast food chain, now closed down) in the road tunnel or Shaabab Express at the bottom of the steps from the main entrance (opposite Scarborough Taps)
