Had my DMI January 8th For Exeter depot. Have been accepted into the talent pool and am now, what feels like, just sat in limbo just waiting for the call!! Gonna just put it to the back of my mind now, and plod on in the job I’m tired of ‍♂️
My hope would be to have started driver training by end of this year....
Well done for passing your DMI. Out of interest when did you sit your stage 2?.

Did they talk to you about depot driver roles during your interview? I had my DMI for Penzance on the 31st and at the end they spent a considerable amount of time talking about that role, which suggests that might be something that comes up a lot sooner than an 'actual' driver vacancy.

No, they just said if you do well in your DMI then you’ll be called up sooner. Once there’s another course scheduled then they will call the highest scoring candidates. Sooooo if you’ve been waiting for over a year...... They did say there were no plans for a new intake until later part of 2020

Yeah I know the higher your score, the quicker you'll get through as you get the earliest available shots. They don't tend to let you know of your position in the pool as far as I'm aware though.

They mentioned to me the possibility of being offered depot driver roles too as it's something they struggle to fill. You do two years driving only at the depot as opposed to mainline, then after the two years you move across to mainline driving. The first year is 80% of the salary and the second year is 90%.

Hmmm they didn’t mention that, I’d be quite interested in that!!

I had found a similar practice test online with motor vehicles pedestrians traffic light etc but on there if you miss out anything then you get incorrect answer so I was thinking I’d have to be 100% accurate, I’m ok with finding 1-3 objects but it’s when there’s all 5 objects in the picture it’s very difficult to spot all 5 in a second or less

What I really meant is if on one or two you miss one thing, it probably isn't the end of the world in terms of passing. Obviously scoring high throughout the whole process is advantageous in terms of getting up the list of being offered a course. Just relax and don't overthink it and you'll find you do well. All the best and I'm sure you'll post on here how you get on

If it's a depot driver position that is with a view to progress to mainline driver, I'd check if that is the normal course of events. If you'd have to apply and effectively join a pot with all other applicants again it is probably just worth waiting it out for mainline in case vacancies don't come around for many years or there's only a couple and there's high scorers in your pot (not saying you won't be top scorer)

As far as I’m aware there’s no automatic (naturally prepared to be corrected here) progression from depot driver to mainline driver (not in the same way some TOCs use the role at least....its a standalone job, but you’d be supported if you wanted to progress), so would have to apply etc when vacancies arise. You’d naturally have an advantage should mainline driver vacancies be advertised again though, and the money is still very good.

GWR have maneuverers and Depot Drivers. Depot drivers I believe do quite a few of the rules aspects of the training that mainline drivers do, so this again will help with the transition to mainline.

Oh okay, thanks for that. That’s not really what was suggested when it was explained during my interview, so that’s something I’d have to qualify should I eventually be offered that instead.

I have my DMI coming up in 3 weeks for Plymouth. Safe to say the nerves are already kicking in. Starting prep on company history and the general competency based questions I'm sure we're all used to now.

Surprised I've got this far in the process. Looking forward to seeing what the interview will be like as I've heard such a mixed bag of how they go!

Mine was fine, albeit for a different depot. It was with two depot managers who were both really nice. It went on for a while, about an hour and a half, but did feel more like a chat than just being pounded with questions. Good luck!

Hi guys and girls. 2 questions for you all. Is anybody in the talent pool for Westbury. Is anyone waiting for DMI for Westbury? I'm at that stage myself having passed stage 2 mid January.

Cheers
N

I passed the MMI on the 10th so was probably at the same place as you. My last update was the 11th confirming I'd passed so fingers crossed it won't be too long for a DMI slot!

Yeah I check almost daily just in case! May drop them an email as my application always says "Submitted" so may be a glitch somewhere but oh well hopefully it'll come through soon. Good to see people being offered DMI's though!

It will always say submitted even when you have a job, the only time I have seen it change is when I withdrew an application.

The majority of the questions have already been mentioned on the forum so it’s all useful! Just think similar kind of questions to the MMI plus stuff around why you want to join GWR, what about them in particular so brush up on facts or what makes them different. Then obviously motivations around the role and they want to ensure you have a good understanding of what the role actually involves.
