The 317/8 had a strange refurb for Stansted express and were often in poor condition with pictures posted on Twitter to shame national express and greater Anglia not sure if flat cloth was used but carpets and seat coverings were done in a peculiar material

So 317/7 and /8 gone and most/5 and /6 too ?
Greater Anglia have some 317/8s that are still in service

The situation is roughly as follows:
317337-348 all still going.
317501-515 mainly still going but 317512 is dead and 514 looking dodgy too.
317649-672 about half are out of service.
317/7 all out of service.
317881-892 the first six are all running, the latter six are all out of service.

The 317/8 was just a ( very) cheap conversion for Airport service. A fee seats removed adjacent to the doors and that was basically it . Original 2+3 seating retained in standard and 2+2 in the 1st class section, yet premium fares charged.

According to Twitter, ex-LO 317709 + 317710 went under their own power from Wembley to Ilford for decommissioning so they potential may be the first ones to go for scrap. Also I’m sure a pair of ex-GA 317/6s went to Ilford from Harwich recently

Didn’t Richard Clinnick say the /7s were to be brought into service with GA short term?

They might be coming back to replace the last few non PRM 317s although the 317/7 aren't fully compliant either. They still have the old school rubber door buttons for a start. Hopefully it will be less of a farce than the ECML to MML HST move.

If anyone is curious what "could" be done with these, I stumbled across a 2015 document from Angel proposing to almost completely rebuild them. Ancient history now.

A selection of quotes:
...it is possible to re-form the units into three or five-car units or a mixture of both. A three-car unit can be created by removing the intermediate trailer vehicle from the unit.
Selective door opening enables the train to stop at different platform lengths and open the doors safely.
The high capacity seating layout is aimed at commuter railways, where passenger numbers are high and journey times are such that passengers will require a seat as well as a comfortable travelling environment.

I'm not really familiar with the ins and outs of the Anglia region, but would it be possible to reintroduce the 317s from store to allow the 360s all to go to EMR? I know there are PRM issues with those stored 317s, but would that be insurmountable?

The eight class 321 and 322 from Northern will allow eight 360s to be withdrawn. That should be enough to progress with crew training etc. 317s are of limited use on the GEML as only Ilford drivers sign them. About a decade ago, some of the Intercity crews signed them. They were quite common on the 0630/1130/1630 from Liverpool St to Norwich.

more likely if they going to bring them up to spec and into use that they would be sent over to west anglia where 317's are already used. Latest I heard was that 379's are staying until June/July next year, by which point I severely doubt 720's will be in a position to cover all non 745 west anglia work (if any), so will need plenty of available 317's to cover the work of those 30 units if they do end up leaving then.

Is it the retention of the Class 379s (being displaced from Stansted Express by the Class 745s) that is allowing the worst condition Class 317s to be withdrawn?

Just seen 317339 and 341 on the 1442 Liverpool St to Hertford East service. There's a pair of 379s (024 & 026) on that route aswell. 653 and 348 are paired together too on the Hertford East. Also 317649 and 317883 been up at Hertford East all day, heading into Liverpool St now

I have been going past Wembley everyday for the last 4 weeks, and there have been a few LO 317's parked up there for those 4 weeks.

Does anyone know which 317's they are?

317656 + 317661 were dragged down to Eastleigh Works from Ilford earlier today. Given that Raxstar scraps redundant rolling stock on site at the works, could this have been the pair’s last journey?

It has been confirmed by RAIL Magazine’s Richard Clinnick on Twitter that 317656 + 317661 are the first pair of 317s to go for scrap. They will be disposed of by Raxstar at Eastleigh Works

Of note is that 317661 and 317662 swapped motor cars in the summer, at which point 317662 was withdrawn. I'm surprised that they went to that much effort given that that 661 only lasted a short time in it's new formation.

How comes the younger /6s are being withdrawn first? Poorer condition?

Rather unfortunate that those units with the best interior are being disposed of first.

All to do with bodywork overhauls. The 317/6 haven't been done for eight years or more, so the floors in particular are going rotten. The phase 1 units have all been done more recently.

That makes sense. Still a shame though, they’re quite nice units to travel in still. Better quality than both 319s and 321s (IMO).

Agreed. The refurb at the turn of the century was excellent and they've held up pretty well. The worst bit is the internal doors by the first class. They are falling apart.

It will be interesting to see what state the 317/7 are in when they come back. They were quite dog eared when they finished with LO and the toilets haven't been used for years.

Typically 656 is the only one I've never seen...:(

317/7's were in warm storage at Wembley. They don't require heavy exams. Currently being re-commissioning at Ilford.

Sad to see them go (although my username should have made that obvious!). Remember doing Shenfield to York and back on 661, on the Shambles railtour in 2012.
