Tried that...
The Wi-fi in Sainsburys can barely cope with the scanners let along the phone app traffic as well and the store is a giant faraday cage with no phone signal.
This is a problem with multiple Sainsburys. I don't use their wifi as I'm not on O2 so don't have a password.

In one store my phone signal is too weak to use the app, and in another it sometimes hangs for a while with the spinning wheel and then the item you've scanned can appear in the basket in the app multiple times. I've never had this problem with their own handsets, although not all stores have them

Personally I refuse to use apps like scanners and self scan as it takes jobs from people, replacing them with machines. Plus at the self scan in ASDA, you can't pay using coin of the realm either.

I also subcontract the scanning element to a 22 month old which helps keep them occupied! (Hence another reason for the scanner)

There are just few patches in the store where the scanner doesn't work and it could just be poor signal but also EMC issues due to all the refrigeration equipment near by.

I've tried with my 2 year old but she keeps pressing the buttons on the screen to change quantity.

You don’t need to be O2 to use O2 wifi in Sainsbury’s, just verify a phone number by keying in a code that they text you.

However, if you have random MACs enabled on your phone, it will kick you off.

My local Morrisons seems to have closed their hot food counter - has anyone else seen this in their local branch? Could it be COVID related (staff shortages?)

My local Morrisons has kept them open maybe just staff shortages? Since Covid Morrisons has kept all counters open (apart from start of Lockdown 1 when they were all closed for a short period of a few weeks)

Sainsbury’s near me closed fish, butcher, hot food, pizza, and deli counters sharpish at the start of lockdown last March. The hot food made a reappearance for a few months, and you can sometimes get a pizza too. The other three have not returned and have random other products such as beer stacked in front.

IIRC Sainsbury's decided to close basically all their counters earlier in the year. Nothing to do with COVID in that case, more that they weren't used by the vast majority of customers and cost a lot in terms of space and staffing. I suspect if any survive it will be the hot food ones.

Yes, in November last they decided to permanently close all deli, meat and fish counters in stores. A small number of Cafe's were also closed permanently too (replaced by Argos mainly). Went Lidl earlier for a change and to see what they got in, quite busy, just can't understand why the don't put self service tills in, for anyone popping in for just a few bits will really speed the service up.

They are, just at very slow rate.
They don't give a stuff about how long people queue.

All the ones near me have a small number as an option, some of the “High Street” branches are only self service (they do have one or two normal checkouts but never seen them open).

Aldi’s a few years ago said that they weren’t going to have any self service checkouts as they were too slow but then introduced some in 2019 in some shops.

I wish Aldi would get on with it and install some at my local branch. The "fastest in the world" checkout attendants only appear to be fast at abandoning their stations the instant there's a break in the queue, and leaving everybody who then arrives to queue up at the checkouts for about 20 minutes before they deign to come back from the shelf-stacking.

I was very sad when, a couple of years ago, our Tesco in the town centre closed its deli counter. Not that I used it much per se, but it always provided lots of lovely cooked meats for the reduced fridge, often at 25% or less of the original price. Whenever I was going somewhere by train I would go in the day before and see what I could find for my travel picnic. I can still taste the Finest rare roast beef slices, there's nothing as nice as that on the packaged meat shelves.

My local Tesco just cut its opening hours again. Only open from 7am-8pm.

One problem supermarkets are having is staff availability. This is mainly due to staff having to isolate. I am told that entire store management teams are affected in some stores meaning movement of management between stores to keep the show on the road.

My local Aldi seems to have a problem with customer availability. Just back back this morning and for the first time ever, as I finished checking out there were no customers behind and only a couple in the entire store!

I think I read that for the first time in many years Aldi has seen growth slower than the ‘traditional’ supermarkets. Certainly round here I found Sainsbury’s and Waitrose a lot busier than they used to be. Remember having a chat with a lady a few doors down in the spring who said that she normally shopped at Aldi’s but wasn’t sure about going there in case she caught something. I gave up on Aldi / Lidl however because I always remember them being a bit zoo-like and thought that if the normal supermarkets had queues then they must be even worse! Didn’t last long however before I reverted, having realised that they’re actually quieter to shop in!

I wonder if Asda or Tesco will ever go back to 24 hour opening? (Mon AM through till Sat night) I remember most of which were 24 hours dropped this just before "Lockdown 1" last year. I know both had vastly reduced their 24 hour store network over the last few years anyway. My local Tesco dropped 24 hour opening (Sunday excepted of course!) about 3 or 4 years ago.

The three big Tesco nearest to me dropped their 24hr opening in around 2016, so quite a bit pre-COVID!

The newest (or one of, I forget when it opened haha) Lidl’s in Aberdeen has self service checkouts! So handy if, as you say, just popping in for a handful of things. It is centrally located, and surrounded by student accommodation, so perhaps that’s why. Who knows, they might introduce them to more stores in the future.

Tesco Corstorphine in Edinburgh is open 24 Hours (no Sunday excepted) 7 Days per week.

However my local (Falkirk) Tesco used to be the same but is now only 6am-Midnight 7 Days per week.

No restrictive silly 6 Hour Sundays in Scotland.

The self service checkouts have been going into the late 2019 and 2020 opening stores as far as I know but not refurbs yet.

The one on the bridges in Edinburgh has them. That's been there for 10 years or so. Tbh off the back of that I assumed they'd all had them fitted

They didn't when the refurbed my local one in late 2019 but the new ones since summer 2019 have all had them fitted. Lots of staffing benefit for them so can't see why not.

The one on Portland has self-service but then it was only opened in 2019, it's not always quicker as they generally don't have anyone manning it, relying on one of the checkout operators to deal with any self-service issues whilst still dealing with their own customers, given only one checkout is generally open this can really slow things down.
I do wish the one in Crewkerne had them but i's a very small store and it's crammed enough as it is (it was a medium sized co-op), it would appear that they want another site in the town but where that would be is un-known, would make it a lot less handy is they did move as pretty much anywhere else would be no longer central to the town.

Tesco had a big review of stores in 2016 and a lot of stores stopped opening 24hrs along with a removal of night shift working (which unfortunately means the shop floor is full of stock cages most of the evening instead of overnight)

Yeah, the local one (open until midnight) is like that - trying to get to the bread shelves after about 9.30 can be a complicated obstacle course.

How about the home delivery pickers, who must be more in abundance at all times of day since the increase in slots for the vulnerable. I bet these get in the way too.
