'Pools mascot is a large monkey called H'Angus. The guy who was inside the costume originally, one Stuart Drummond, campaigned for the Mayorship of Hartlepool by promising every schoolchild in the area a free banana every day at school. He was duly elected, but reneged on his promise and was duly booted out!

That’s not quite right. He was elected in the early 2000s, re-elected twice more after that, and only stood down after there was a vote to get rid of the mayoral system. The campaign promise is spot on though - he just never thought for a moment that he’d win

That isn't correct.

The away goals rule is to be abolished in UEFA competitions.
This was quite a surprise (well I didn’t realise it was on the cards anyway).
Personally I quite enjoyed the jeopardy but there you go...

The rule, used since 1965, decided drawn two-legged games by favouring the team that scored the most away goals.
All ties level on aggregate at the end of the second leg will instead go to extra time and potentially penalties.

"It is no longer appropriate for an away goal to carry more weight," said Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin.

Uefa's club competitions committee made the proposal in May and it has now been approved by the body's executive committee.

I don’t think Rafa Benitez taking on Everton has come up yet either has it?

First man to manage both sides since the 1890's !!

I wonder why Rafa keeps touring around European Clubs, imagine the amount he has received in payouts for being fired over the years.

Despite success at Liverpool and Chelsea he has never quite "made it" to the top echelon in my view.

Should have stayed at Newcastle ???

He'll need to win the fans over almost immediately with results on the pitch, that is for sure

Rafa is a good manager and a controversial appointment, though if Everton win the first 3 games Rafa will be proclaimed as the new Messiah by the fans of course.

Although Rafa Benitez will now have managed both Liverpool clubs, he did not go directly between the two.

There are some managers who have directly switched, such as Ron Saunders from Aston Villa to Birmingham City in 1982, before the final few matches of the season (not also forgetting the biggest one the European Cup Final, having done it the proper way by winning the top flight division the previous season). The former owner Doug Ellis had switched from the Bluenoses to Villa a long time ago.

Although both sides were founded on the opposite banks of the Clyde, Ian McCall switched from Clydebank (the 1965-2002 incarnation) to Greenock Morton as Clydebank were a busted flush at the time and played their home matches at Cappielow Park - the home of Greenock Morton.

I do recall there was a Portuguese player who directly switched from Everton to Liverpool over 20 years ago (I think his name began with the letter "X") - unsure whether to avoid Everton losing him on a Bosman.

Kenny Miller went from Hearts to Glasgow Rangers (1872-2012 incarnation), to Wolves, then Celtic, then Derby County, and Glasgow Rangers again. For the Ibrox and Parkhead sides, no player has ever gone directly between the two (obviously to avoid death threats) that I can think of. Another notable player that has played for both sides is Maurice Johnson, after leaving Celtic for MLS in the USA, he returned to Scotland in 1989 declaring that "Celtic are the only team I ever wanted to play for", before controversially accepting the larger offer from David Murray to play for the Ibrox side, therefore upsetting both sets of supporters as they could clearly see that Johnson was only in it for the money. Nobody has seen or heard of him since then after he left Ibrox.

Not neen many over the years.

Willie Kivlichan moved directly from Celtic to Rangers in 1907 (and after WW1, was the Celtic team doctor in 1931 when goalkeeper John Thomson was fatally injured in a Celtic vs Rangers local derby).

And an Alec Bennett made a similar cross-Glasgow move a year later in 1908.

That's about it! o_O

Steve Bruce has managed the impressive feat of managing Birmingham City, Aston Villa, Sheffield United, Sheffield Wednesday, Sunderland and Newcastle. 3 different sets of rivals. Doesn't seem to have attracted too much abuse from any of them - Newcastle fans seem more annoyed he was appointed by Mike Ashley than the fact he used to manage the Wearsiders.

Liverpool sold Peter Beardsley to Everton in 1991 as Souness thought he was past it at 30. Needless to say he became one of the few players to score a winning goal in the Merseyside derby for both sides.

The late Gary Ablett moved from Liverpool to Everton as well, another Souness sale.

Bradford's former player manager, the late Laurie Brown, was transferred directly from Arsenal to Tottenham in 1964.

Johnston emigrated to the USA in 1996 and played for Kansas City Wizards in the MLS before managing Toronto FC. I think he left there about 10 years ago. Still in North America as far as I know.

Alfie Conn was another who played for Celtic and the other mob. Hearts too. He also played for Spurs in the English league.

Steven Pressley also turned out for Rangers and Celtic as well as Hearts.

Kenny Miller is unique though - the only player to play first team football for all three OF clubs... :E

Has anyone any idea when the 2021/2022 fixtures list for the Northern Premier League Premier league and regional leagues fixtures are scheduled to appear? There are quite a number of clubs now participating in this particular league, that covers a very wide geographical area.

It's sometime this Wednesday evening for both the Northern Premier League and Isthmian League, and 1.00 pm on Friday for the Southern League.

The National League/ National League North / National League South fixtures were all announced last week.

Other lower-level non-league fixtures have mostly already been announced, largely on an ad hoc basis and mostly just for early season, i.e. July / August 2021.

Fixtures for the early rounds of the FA Cup / FA Trophy and FA Vase were announced last Friday.

Is it correct that the Premier Division of the Northern Premier League are step three and the regional divisions are step four in the "pyramid"?

Hyde United's opening match is home to Atherton Collieries, who are quite a good side.

Effectively yes. At Northern Premier League level, the Premier Division is "Step Three" and the (three) NPL lower divisions, immediately below, which are currently designated East, Midlands and West, are "Step Four".

Broadly similar arrangement in the Isthmian and Southern Leagues.

Is Step Three the leagues below the Alliance/Nationwide [sic] League (the fifth tier)?
