New Brighton is 23. Meols, Hoylake, West Kirby few minutes longer, Wallasey Grove Road less. Crosby about 20.More like 45 minutes…
However you look at it Liverpudlians do not go to Cleethorpes for the sea.

I support the idea of a direct train from Cleethorpes to Liverpool as it also gives Sheffield an extra train to Liverpool.
Yes, that's the real benefit - 2tph between Liverpool and Sheffield instead of 1tph "everywhere to everywhere"
It's a way of providing a 2nd train Sheff to Manchester without it having to reverse at Piccadilly

But would Sheffield rather have a connect to Manchester Airport than Cleethorpes?Yes, that's the real benefit - 2tph between Liverpool and Sheffield instead of 1tph "everywhere to everywhere"
Is the reason they haven’t transferred it not something to do with Sprinters being able to use different timings on the Hope Valley line? And to me that makes sense as the EMR service is really busy sometimes and TPE running a service to Liverpool from Cleethorpes would help that plus it also adds to the idea of Liverpool to Nottingham being transferred to TPE

But Sheffield needs another link to Liverpool as EMR gets busy. Plus the choice is never gonna be Cleethorpes or Manchester Airport as they are on opposite sides of the route?
Nope its because COVID delayed it and its now still to be split at Nottingham but stays with EMR.
It still does have an Airport connection. Via an easy cross-platform change at Piccadilly 13/14.
The EMR service is shocking. A busy hourly service connecting Liverpool-Manchester-Sheffield into East Mids and East Anglia and they put two carriages on half the time.
Exactly and most changed at Piccadilly rather than go to the airport
£5 says the number of people staying on the train at Piccadilly to go to Liverpool exceeds the number who ever stayed on at Piccadilly to go to the Airport.

I still say it's a route born out of convenience because they want to provide 2tph Sheffield- Manchester fast without the reverse or taking up scarce space in the main train shed with an unnecessary terminator
It's the Mayor of Sheffield who is complaining about losing his link to the Airport. I live in Halifax- we were promised wires 30 years ago and are still waitingis that a bad thing?
I mean surely it’s a good idea as it takes up less paths out of Manchester Piccadilly and it’ll be much more useful than the Airport extension which was suspended during Covid anyway. It really is a good idea in my opinion I don’t get why you are complaining

If that is the reason did it have to be Liverpool? A through train to Preston or even Blackpool North might have been useful to provide new through journey opportunities from Sheffield. I’ve often observed that that quite a number of people get off the EMR service at Manchester Piccadilly and remain on platform 14 for the Blackpool North train.I still say it's a route born out of convenience because they want to provide 2tph Sheffield- Manchester fast without the reverse or taking up scarce space in the main train shed with an unnecessary terminator

Yes - the existing paths join up nicely without needing a significant recast.

Blackpool used to be served direct from Sheffield but can't remember which route it was. Liverpool via Manchester does make sense for the route change though as likely more demand there. If that is the reason did it have to be Liverpool? To whom?I have to disagree with the mayor on this one. A good connection at Piccadilly would work just as well. An extra Liverpool service is far more useful.
To whom?
The trains will just sit at Piccadilly (hopelessly late) emptying out with passengers from Sheffield only to get replaced by new passengers then crawl towards Liverpool behind the stopper due to being hopelessly late.
The number of passengers doing Sheffield - Liverpool will be counted on one hand.
Just look at the current EMR services at the passenger change in Manchester. The Warrington Central line would be better served by a high frequency stopper service, rather than importing more delays

A friend of mine in Cleethorpes isn’t happy, as they (pre Covid) used to use this service to the airport regularly - it was their usual means of going on holiday. He says this is common practice in that area.
But having said that I tend to agree that the potential for regular journeys to Liverpool outweighs a handful of irregular airport journeys.
Plus a good connection at Piccadilly between the airport and Piccadilly can replace the need for the airport extension
