Was 7 June a one off?
It's planned to run every day Monday to Friday, although I don't believe they've been selling advanced tickets for it. It is of course subject to the caveat that.....
According to Journey Check and confirmed by TFW 1712 Cardiff to Holyhead tonight will be worked by a 175 due to the TFW jargon "Resource Availability". This indicates no driver with traction knowledge
..... Thanks to our old friend Covid meaning only one driver and guard can be trained at a time, there are still a large number of guards and drivers who require training, particularly in Cardiff (who work the 1712 as far as Chester).

Ooh I am glad I read this thread before I booked my travel to/from Abergavenny today! The highlight of the rail part (there was to be a load of cycling between trains) was to be the MK4 set coming back, that's saved me £14-something. Unless I now find a winner IET on the afternoon Paddington services, in which case it will be less saved. Less money going to TfW anyway!

Was surprised to see a Mark 4 set turn up on the 09.45 from Newport to Cardiff this morning (Service ex Holyhead). I hadn't realised that they had commenced service.

Additional Mk4 diagram this Saturday: 1K67 and 1D68.
1005 Holyhead - Crewe and 1445 Crewe - Bangor (after which it then runs empty directly into the sidings at Holyhead). It's likely to be two different sets - I believe the plan was always for this service to run to swap the service set at Holyhead and the training set at Crewe but it was planned on being ECS rather than a public service.

In service due to Chester Races I believe.

It's just turned the ECS into a passenger service, especially as weekends are very busy in the run up to peak summer. Everything else (times, train crew etc) remain as booked.

I can't comment on today, but I've been out for it twice in recent times and both times it has produced. Actually make that three times, I went out once to get a sneak peek at the local to see what MK4s look like in my area too.

If you do go for it, have a great journey. It has to be said it's a fun experience on the MK4s, a bit weird when you expect to hear the underfloor engine noise (I'm clearly too used to DMUs up here!) and glide out of the station in silence!

I also like the great big vinyls on the DVTs, it makes for something different. Somehow I found the Lifeboats one to be appropriate, on a service running along the coast at least. Can't immediately recall what the other one I've seen was, but it's still eye-catching.

I wonder how many Mk4 sets & 67’s are now being stored and would be running if it were not for the training being delayed? (It sure would help to relieve over crowding and free up stock for other services). Here is a couple of photos of them between Newport & Cardiff:>

That's the other vinyl I mentioned in my previous post :) Nice photos there, bit more photogenic a scene than my attempts at Abergavenny and Hereford

They only recently announced that they had obtained the Grand Central rakes (and, if COVID hadn't happened, those rakes wouldn't be available anyway, although Eversholt may have some other off-lease sets) so at best it would only be three rakes running two diagrams per day. We might therefore have had the full morning, lunch and dinner express service each way if it weren't for COVID but there wouldn't be any more than that.

Is the 1712 off Cardiff likely to be a Mk4 set today? Has it been running regularly?
Should be ok for today. If it was planned on being cancelled/subbed for a 175 due to lack of available 67 trained crew it would normally be cancelled by now, and the set is currently en-route from Holyhead apparently without issues.

No guarantee against things going wrong in the next 7 hours though!

Hard to say. At present they can only be used on Cardiff - Holyhead anyway, and direct services on that route have been suspended since Covid anyway (other than the once a day service the stock is currently working which was reinstated for that purpose).

The training started late because of delays in getting the stock ready for every day service - but without Covid training would be a lot quicker so there probably would be a lot more crews trained.

Hopefully as Covid restrictions ease we'll see training ramp up more. The plan for Manchester - Swansea services will require a fairly significant uplift in the amount of qualified train crew, over and above what was originally planned.

Many thanks for clarifying the situation.

The next appearances will be on the other Cardiff-Holyhead services that were planned, as training permits.

The article in Modern Railways suggested that the introduction of the second tranche of Mark 4 sets on South Wales-Manchester services wouldn't be until December 2022.

The carriages and locos needs mods/ testing and there's quite a lot training needed, so Dec 2022 is a sensible date to aim for getting them in service.

I would back up what MR are saying, there's not much hope you'll see a regular service to Manchester before December 2022. I wouldn't hold out hope of even seeing any extra Cardiff Holyhead services for a fair few months yet.

Tbh I am not expecting anything extra until the December timetable change. Baby steps and all that.

Was my eyes playing games or was the set out today on working the (1D68) 1445 Crewe to Bangor service?
Yes it is. One set is booked to do 10:05 Holyhead to Crewe and then a fresh set comes off the shed to so 1D68. Its how the sets are being rotated at the moment so the set on 1D68 should do the WAG for a week barring faults.

There are scheduled ECS moves on a Saturday to change the stock over but in recent Summer weeks they have run in Passenger service. The return only runs to Bangor due to the driver's hours so that it can run straight into the Depot at Holyhead rather than go into the station and have to shunt around.

Are the planning to repaint the coaches at any point? Seems rather odd to have their flagship service running with tatty ex-Virgin vinyls.

They'll need changing at some point, as they won't be consistent with the exGC fleet when they enter service. As to when this will happen or what branding they will go for, that has not yet been confirmed.

As part of the timetable change and the reintroduction of an all day Cardiff - Holyhead service, 2 MKIV sets are now booked in service on weekdays working 3 round trips between them.

Any idea if the first class meals are back yet or when they will be?

AFAIK No catering yet. Onboard trolleys are meant to be restarting on a limited basis this month on other services but I've no idea what the plan is for the MKIVs just yet.
