Thanks - though the irony is that 222104, which EMR specifically done in the full EMR Intercity livery (all purple), now has a random white and purple coach in it from one of the 7 car 222s! So the liveries are now so much of a mismatch that they ideally need to be done again!

Whilst this is going on, the 360s are getting done in their purple liveries, but STILL no signs of refurbishment into 2+2 seating... replacing 2+2 HSTs and Meridians with 3+2 electric units isn't really an upgrade...

I’m hoping the reason is because they want to see how the Aurora seating works in real life and sort any snagging issues before rolling the seats out across the 360s and 170s; but the cynic in me thinks that the DfT won’t authorise any refurbishment at all (would be yet another example of the DfT shafting the East Midlands).

Not sure 2 plus 2 seating is a great idea seeing as how rammed the 8 car 360's have been on peak services recently. Maybe it's not coming. Probably just as well.

Well, we were supposed to be getting 12 car trains in the peak, so if they are indeed as rammed as you are saying, then maybe the time is sooner rather than later to get 12-car 360s introduced, as we were promised!

To what extent do people actually use the middle seats though? If not many of them are occupied then the space is probably better used for standing.

222103/4 have fully declassified composite coaches as well as about a third of the MF coach

Seems to be fairly well used at busy times. I guess having the seats is better than not having the seats

Not if more people would fit in without them.
Think i'd rather have a seat. For the prices charges i always feel it's a bit of an insult to have to stand. Less seats will mean more standees. They could do with charge points, but i'm not a fan of the proposed reduction in seating capacity.

Is there a reason why they could not have put the MC and MF the other way areound then just fully declassified the MF?

Reminds me of one of the EMR HST sets (before they were replaced with the LNER ones, and then fully withdrawn). One of the sets had a random 1st class coach in the Standrad seating area - the seating remained, but the coach was declassified permanently.

Maybe it would have made sense (in this case) to put the 1st Class coach in the Standard section (as you say), re-paint the coach from the outside (so it isn't in 1st class colors) and then completely declassify it in the inside? Would this actually work, or just confuse passengers?

If that was in one of the 8-car sets that would be temporary: a standard class vehicle had been removed for overhaul/repair and there was no standard class spare vehicle to replace it, so it ran with a first class declassified rather than being short-formed.

If that is the same as I recall it was one or more of the 'Angel sets' (ex GC?) - tho the 1st class seats had been re-upholstered in the same red cloth the rest of standard sets used so at 1st glance it seemed the same as std class apart from being 2+1 seating. Done by EMT before EMR started.
Unless there were others in the main fleet too.

Definitely the ex GC Angel Sets which had a TF (spare TFs?) refurbished and declassified.

If you don't mind the dated interior, somewhat of a treat to get 2+1 seating in standard class! Would still prefer a Meridian myself.

I must say, I'll be delighted if I can travel in 222 "First" Class with a standard class ticket. Those leather seats are very soft with brilliant chunky armrests and wings, even if the genuineness of the leather is questionable

A refresh of the 222's has started including replacing/cleaning of the seat covers.

EMR refresh Intercity fleet: New seat covers, toilet interiors and special anti-bacterial protection

Friday, 20 May 2022
  • 5300 seat covers to be refreshed or replaced
  • Class 222 Intercity train toilets given new interiors
  • First train operator to use new state-of-the art anti-bacterial product
East Midlands Railway (EMR) has begun a project to refresh the interiors of its Intercity fleet – including replacing seats, toilet interiors and covering surfaces in a new special anti-bacterial cleaning product.

The work will be carried out at Derby’s Etches Park depot and will see 5300 seats being refreshed, including new back covers, seat cushions, headrests and arm rests - while a number of seat covers will also receive deep cleaning by a specialist company.
The toilet refurbishment in all 27 of EMR’s Class 222 Meridian trains has already been completed, providing a series of improvements to give a better experience for customers.
These improvements include walls being painted, a new vinyl applied to door panels, the replacement of damaged fixtures, as well as the Call for Aid units and mirror surrounds being resprayed. Sinks have also been polished and buffed, while the baby changing areas have also been improved.
As part of this work, EMR will be the very first train operating company in the UK to use a new cleaning product which makes surfaces easier to keep clean and works continuously to reduce the growth of bacteria.
The Cotech Biosafe product, which includes a special technology called Microban antimicrobial protection, will be applied to toilet surfaces to enhance hygiene and bring piece of mind to customers.
Cotech Biosafe is the longest-lasting coating of its kind currently on the market, protecting a surface for around seven to 10 years and does not require monthly reapplications like other similar products.
The special product is supplementary to the regular cleaning programme that is already in place on the trains.
Neil Bamford, Fleet Director at East Midlands Railway, said: “As we await the introduction of our new Aurora fleet, we want to ensure our current Intercity trains offers customers a clean and inviting interior.

“Following an audit, we have identified a number of seats that fall below our standards, and we are working hard to replace them.
"Likewise, we wanted to refresh the toilets and make sure we are using the latest products available on the market to maintain cleanliness.”

Good news, its about time the seat cushions got replaced as they are quite uncomfortable now all the foam has been squashed flat over the years.

Hopefully this refurbishment also include a good clean of the exteriors as the white base of the former East Midlands Trains coaches are now looking very grubby. The purple livery doesn't show the grime so much.

Although loosely related EMR are rolling out automated announcements across its entire fleet using Julie Berry as the voice. I believe the roll out is imminent
