1500 miles per day? The highest daily diagrammed mileage was 1,169 miles on the East Coast.
I remember that from years ago on BR diagrams under Intercity. You look at diagrams today and stock utilisation is not what it was under BR

The highest mileage diagram was under LNER. 1,169 miles in a day wasn't really possible before MTU fitment due to the higher fuel consumption.

Surely they are getting to a point where certain spares are now unavailable? And how long can those power units and other ancillaries remain unused before they start to seize up?

I would think it depends on what if anything is done by Papworth while they are there. If they’re at least switched on and shunted around it will help. If they are literally just dumped there then they’ll be getting more and more knackered. Seems strange to think that (to my knowledge) not a single LNER (non crashed) power car has been scrapped.

Do we read anything into the fact it appears to be all the ex GWR power cars that are going into preservation now? Are the LNER ones all demics? Not a single LNER power car in preservation?
Not operating in preservation, but wasn't 43102 with LNER at one point and is now in static preservation?

A few more this week, all by road, as below:

Cab-less 43005 left Laira for Newport Docks on Tuesday 4th.

43041 left on Wednesday 5th and arrived Thursday 6th to Newport.

43171 left Thursday 6th and is currently en route to Newport.

All have been heavily stripped for spares.

Had 005 lost its cast GWR lettering do know? I presume it would have been de-branded?

Hi, thanks for the info. Any info on at what time did 43171 left Laira? I might be able to catch it near Bristol

Both 005 and 041 have lost their cast logos and all three have had their nameplates removed.

I just seen a heavily stripped GWR powercar on the M5 heading north between Weston-super-Mare and Clevedon. Couldn’t see a number, but all the doors seemed to be missing.

Not sure what update @TrainTrackJack was going to post but there was news on WNXX yesterday regarding 43052, it's currently being stripped for spares at Nemesis Rail and its cab, thought to be destined for 43054, has been removed, there is also a report today that 086, 087 & 196 have been moved from Laira to Newport Sims by road
43052 reported in the latest Today’s Railways UK to have moved to EMR Kingsbury for disposal

How up to date is Wikipedia's fleet list? It believes only 22 have been scrapped (should climb to at least 25 when the 3 above are moved across). I'm surprised at how many are still in storage, given many Mk3s have gone already. I would have thought GWR start clearing out some more soon as well, the list currently claiming 31 are still with them.

While you say that, a number of those still in storage have been stripped for parts already - for example, one of the reasons why the 125 Group were lucky to pick up 43025 at Ely wasn’t just because of the condition it is in, but because it hadn’t been stripped for parts for ScotRail yet.

I heard a rumour today that Colas Rail are considering buying some Class43 power cars to replace some of their Class37 and specifically for Test Trains.

Apologies if this has already been reported and discussed - I haven't read all 18 pages of this thread.

They acquired five power cars (ex-EMR/LNER) on lease for the purpose of partially replacing class 37 traction on the PLPR (plain line pattern recognition) infrastructure monitoring trains two years ago (43251/257/272/274/277). They have recently taken on another five ex-XC power cars on lease to supplement these.

.... I have seen and photographed 43251/272/274/277 on Test Train workings and they are still in various liveries except for 43 277 'Safety Task Force' which is in the latest Colas Rail livery following an extensive overhaul at Buckfast Engineering Works where i photographed her in January this year.

I wonder if Colas Rail will paint the ex-XC power cars in either all yellow or match 277's livery. I don't think that just slapping a big Colas Rail yellow diamond logo on top of the XC livery would look good at all. We'll have to wait and see but I favour some variety in loco liveries.

For the moment I wouldn’t expect anything more than Colas logos on the base XC livery. The amount of recording shifts getting lost due to traction issues at the moment is crazy so just getting them working will be the priority.

So despite the traction shortage, four of the recently acquired batch are parked up at Old Dalby?

I gather there’s some kind of paperwork issue stopping Colas from using the ex-XC power cars just yet, so I guess not much point in having them cluttering up the chronically congested RTC. There are also still a handful of outstanding route clearance issues on a couple of the PLPR circuits which will necessitate continued use 37s for a short while yet.

It's not to do with the traction/brake interlock (with the sliding door trailers) that the ex-XC power cars have, is it?

.... So there is paperwork rather than just leaves on the track, so to speak.

As a railway photographer I use RTT to track the progress and expected time of arrival of trains at my chosen location spots and recently I have noticed some fairly wide fluctuations between early and late passing times.

Out of interest, apart from availability what are the factors which influence whether Class43 or 37 propel a Test Train?
