Does anyone have any info on salary expectations for SWR Driver Managers? Are on-call payments built into the salary or additional? Managers are usually paid a percentage more than drivers but unsure what this is at SWR.

Thanks

In addition, is retention and outer London allowances included same as drivers?
Basingstoke and Salisbury are both Band C depots for drivers, which don’t get any London Regional Retention Allowance (only Band A and B depots do).

I believe the percentage has shrunk somewhat since the last pay rise. I don’t think there’s an on call allowance. Quite a lot of duty weeks involving weekend working now of early and lates. Certainly no overtime. They certainly have my respect as they work pretty darn hard. I considered if for a short while but decided not for me, horses for courses and all that.

And that’s for fully qualified driver managers as opposed to “non technical” DMs? Seems very low.
It’s at least on par with drivers, probably a couple of % higher. Don’t think there are many NT on the network.

Would you happen to know about allowances? For example would Wat/Wim DM’s get the same London/retention allowances as drivers?

SWR drivers are now on £77k so there's no way their managers are on less than £80k surely

Good question to ask in your interviews then Valentine as that’s a 707 and I’m sure I remember you being a driver here you must have a few contacts who can help?

When I enquired pre pay rise driver managers were on £10k more than mainline! Or that was what I was told

Thank you! I wonder if that will be a bit less now ASLEF have had their pay rise

I can't speak for SWR but certainly not all TOCs have a fixed differential in terms of percentage of salary or even set amount between Drivers and Driver Managers. Since the recent ASLEF pay deal some TOCs pay around the same for both roles and certainly there is much more earning potential as a driver once Sundays (if not in the working week), RDW and overtime is taken into account. If you're currently a driver and fancy a decent pay cut, then go for it.

It was 8% extra a few years ago, as I understand it managers didn’t receive a rise for at least one year and when they did get a rise it wasn’t backdated.

Happy to be corrected as it’s something the grade doesn’t really discuss so what I’ve been told has come from different parties.

I’d never do the jump for the money as I know I’d be on less. 40 hour, 5 day week no overtime doesn’t do it for me, and having managed in a past life I know how challenging it can be.

The only advantage of a manager role is the potential working hours of Monday to Friday 9-4! Take that away and the only benefit is gone and you’ll then spend all your working hours around the same 4/5 problem drivers who know ASLE&F will back them up and you’ve got a situation where you hate work!
Not for me but good luck if you apply

I think that’s par for the course in management roles - as one DM told me 10% of their drivers seem to take up 90% of their time!
