And some parts of the East Midlands too! Just as quick (and easy) for those of us based there (or at least formerly) to get to the centre Brussels or Paris via rail compared to some local airports in the region!
Indeed, they are the largest shareholders in both (with SNCB/NMBS having smaller shareholdings in both), but they are effectively operated as open access operators in UK terms. As they are not "incorporated" into a state operator (even if their shares are owned by them), I suspect normal market...
I suspect the primary reason for the postponement on Thalys' side is their own liquidity problems as they've recorded a loss of €170m, making it challenging to buy Eurostar (or justify spending their bailout/loans on buying Eurostar in their respective circumstances).
One used to be able to book through tickets on Eurostar's own website (UK leg tickets were to/from London Eurostar CIV, LOE, as opposed to London Internationl CIV, LNE), but for at least over a year there's been an incompatibility between National Rail and Eurostar's booking systems.
I note...
It also depends on the nature of the business conducted. Those involving physical goods and certain areas of the service sector will definitely see a decrease, whilst other parts of the service/industrial sector which don't involve physical goods will probably remain roughly the same I suspect.
There wasn't a relief crew - the changes were done at water stops.
You are correct that Tornado lacks a corridor tender and it does have a larger water capacity than the original A1s - the removal of the water scoop and reduction of coal capacity from 9 to 7.5 tons allowed the water capacity to...
I'd expand "near a tube line or suburban railway" to include shorter distance intercity as well! In my old neck of the woods, my family would chose to travel down to KGX for E* rather than fly as 90 ish mins by rail to get to STP was still quicker, more convenient, and usually price competitive...
Unsure about 2019 capacity, but in the early 2010s, there is this House of Lords Committee report which discusses capacity, TLDR: 50% of passenger capacity is used and about 10% of tunnel capacity is used https://publications.parliament.uk/pa/ld201012/ldselect/ldeucom/229/22907.htm
As someone who has had to make several essential journeys between Belgium and the UK (allowed by the rules of both countries each and every time and no more often that was strictly necessary), I heartily second this as I also consider that it is an essential service that has made such travel far...
People also seem to forget that financially Eurostar is domiciled in the UK for tax purposes. Thus, similarly to airlines with foreign shareholders but are UK taxpayers and who have been paid out, there's a financial incentive for the UK to support Eurostar. Morally as well I'd argue with...
Steam tours definitely have operated out of London Liverpool Streets in the last few years - I recall in 2017 Tornado was chartered by a local council for a Liverpool Street - Walton-on-the-Naze service (terminated early at Stratford on the return leg though due to delays during the...
If memory serves, between Leeming Bar and Northallerton the automatic crossings operate like any other crossing and the gated crossings are opened/closed by either railway officials or the footplate crew (depending on the nature of the movement on the route).
The ORR's decision letter states that GNWR proposed to acquire 4 225 sets (with the option for a 5th), so I suspect at least 4 Class 91s (or Class 90s) if not a couple more!
It was pulled by the tour promoter (Golden Eagle Luxury Trains) due to bookings not being where they were projected to be. If it had gone ahead I wouldn't have been too worried regarding the market focusing on luxury railtours only - we have less pricey luxury railtours currently (thinking Royal...
