In the last five and a half years HETT spent £18000 storing this unit undercover in an attempt to offer it the best home it has ever had in preservation after being cast aside by Wirral in 1996.
During that period donations in support of the project in respect of the 503 totalled just over...

I am confident there will be no attempt made to install electrification on any standard gauge heritage railway in the UK in my lifetime, the biggest driver of that is the prohibitive cost.

People will spend their money on what interests them. There is no obligation on anybody to complete an imaginary tick list of preserving one of everything; and that is collecting not preservation.

I’ve never been convinced that there is a sustainable market for main line operations for preserved EMU stock. The enthusiasts market is far too fickle, the farewell tours were one offs and can’t be repeated on any regular basis, plus TOCs have no scope to support the operation of heritage stock...
You’ll struggle to find a charity that has separate donate buttons for any aspect of its work, some of the very big ones have a ‘sponsor this or that scheme’ but they are far, far larger than HETT and have paid staff and budgets that run into the millions.
HETT had one monthly expenditure which...
