TfL's timetable: confusing and pointless as it doesn't show the GWR services along the same route

Moderator note: Split from https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/list-of-published-december-2019-timetable-pdf-files.194229/ A confusing and largely pointless timetable, given it doesn't also show the GWR services from Paddington that also call at the local stations between there and Reading.

    GWR Dec 19 timetable

First I've heard about it. Crossed wires amongst the Twitter team? Or will one of the two planned additional off-peak Superfasts to Bristol now go to South Wales instead? A spoiler to ruin the chances of an open access application being successful?

Class 165 balancing speeds (per notch)

I believe the turbocharger kicks in at notch 5. For a GWR unit on level track you'll get to 90mph in 7 or 6, and might just about eventually get there in 5. Notch 4 and you'll struggle to get much above 60, and progressively lower through to notch 1 where you're probably looking at about 30mph...

GWR Intercity Express Train (IEP) initial diagrams & allocations

You might be right, jimm - we'll find out in a couple of months. I know the current halts train is a little early for some who work in Oxford, who will appreciate the extra 20 or so minutes to get to the station for this new 17:45 train, especially with the halts train moving back another two...

GWR Intercity Express Train (IEP) initial diagrams & allocations

It certainly won’t be empty but with the 16:44 before and 17:45 following it, the latter in effect an additional train, and only going as far as Moreton, I doubt it’ll be too packed. A little like the opposite Turbo arrival in the morning which usually has a few seats free.

GWR Intercity Express Train (IEP) initial diagrams & allocations

Certainly that was the case since the turn of the century up until its removal (as was the case with the up refuse siding you mentioned earlier), but IIRC it was regularly used up until the mid to late 90s to layover the daily Turbo that formed the 'Halts' train which in those days terminated at...

GWR Intercity Express Train (IEP) initial diagrams & allocations

Yes and it should depart from Platform 1, though the option to shunt it to Platform 2 (via Platform 1) for an on-time departure will also be available should the 18:59 to Hereford be running a little late. Stabling for a Turbo also used to be available in the short siding on the downside by...

Heathrow Express (GWR) 387s - New Interior

It's an ex-GWR unit - 140, the first to be delivered in fact - all twelve of them will be.

GWR Intercity Express Train (IEP) initial diagrams & allocations

All IETs except for one of the late evening ones I believe. And, from December, the evening 'all shacks' service is also a Turbo - running as far as Moreton-In-Marsh, before returning to Oxford at 19:10.

    Worcestershire Parkway station progress

Good to see we are on course for a December opening. Let's hope any 'final approval' red tape doesn't prove too difficult to cut through as we saw with Kenilworth.

    GWR Dec 19 timetable

Just for the sake of accuracy the Aston Magna curve is 70mph, not 60mph. Departing trains from Moreton-In-Marsh will usually reach 75mph before slowing down slightly to the 70mph limit (some drivers will just stick to 70mph to save braking). If the 75mph limit was to be raised to 90mph west of...

    Oxford Station

Indeed, initial work on the through bi-directional Platform 5 continues. I believe part of the YHA building needs to be demolished, a new bridge deck installed south of the station, and Roger Dudman Way being combined with Cripley Road with IIRC the possibility a couple of houses would need...

    A question about Class 800s/801s/802s

There is a dual mode, where you can select which unit runs in which mode on the TMS - no second driver required. I don't think it's been used 'in anger' yet though and probably isn't worth the effort for the small gain. It would be something a driver would only do under instruction from Hitachi.

    A question about Class 800s/801s/802s

Yes and yes. Power output is shown for each GU as a percentage, and if one is lost you see the others uprate the percentage. With the previous power settings you would be in the 90+% bracket only at very low speeds or if a GU or two were out. It'll be interesting to see how any software...

Improving buggy provision on Class 80x trains

Indeed not. I think there would be a lot of hesitancy in making too many changes for a combination of reasons, including loss of face, cost and duration a unit might be out of action, but hopefully if something was done similar to my suggestion then at least two out of those three bases would...

Improving buggy provision on Class 80x trains

I posted over on the Coffee Shop forum an idea to improve provision for buggies, prams, pushchairs and rollators which are very badly catered for on GWR's fleet of 80x units, and it created an interesting debate, so I thought I'd post it here as well. The 5-car units have no provision for...

    Worcestershire Parkway station progress

In terms of the station itself, I reckon a December TT change opening date may well be on, but I can't see it being earlier.

Great Western Electrification 'before and after' video cab ride comparison

Haha, thanks, and yes it is, isn't it! I think the 2019 'car' is slightly ahead at the end of sector one, but overall a very close lap time. :D Footage was recorded at 50fps so that minor time adjustments to the video speed of one of the clips to account for differing rates of acceleration...

    Great Western Electrification Progress

Just a heads up to a video link I've posted on the appropriate board, which shows the changes made as a result of the electrification from a cab ride between Reading and Didcot Parkway now that all the platform extensions have been completed...
