Mobile Phone Coverage on Main Lines

I've just got a new budget (ish) phone (same price range as the old one, £200 approx) and it copes with the Meridians/Class 222s much better than the old one did. At a very rough guess, for London to Nottingham it's improved from getting a usable signal only 70% of the time to around 90%. That's...

    Trivia: 3+ changes from York

Two trains per hour from St. Pancras to Ashford. I did this journey a few of months ago, not from York, true, but via St. Pancras and Ashford to the Marshlink line. It's very convenient.

it’s a fairly safe bet that standard class passengers and taxpayers will indeed be paying for 1st class refreshments.

I would think there's a good chance that if these "influential types" had their 1st class removed it wouldn't get them in contact with the overcrowding etc. since they would just abandon the railways altogether, and would then care even less about their state. At least in 1st they still get to...

Trip Report - Wrexham from the north - 2024/04/20

I guess I wasn't clear, we were just 30 seconds from Bidston, where the Wrexham train terminated, when the guy tried to buy a ticket from the TfW guard about 30 seconds before he needed to change onto Merseyrail.

Trip Report - Wrexham from the north - 2024/04/20

When I was there the waiting room was open but the ticket office was closed (shutters down). Unfortunate for the guy on the Wrexham to Bidston service, who tried to buy a ticket to Lime Street from the guard but was told there was not enough time and to buy at the office (we were literally...

If MML electrification is ever completed, could 810s be cascaded

Moderator note: split from https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/mml-electrification-progress-updates.110445/ Could the 810's be cascaded (maybe to Cross Country?) and replaced with pure EMUs if electrification is completed part way through their life? Then maybe the "overkill" engines...

    The last coal train?

There's an interesting (and somewhat sad) article in The Guardian about the impending shutdown of Ratcliffe. I'm going to miss the cooling towers, they always signal "nearly home" when coming back from London. Relevant quote:

    Leeds Station Improvement

P17 lengthening would be great if it led to the busier Nottingham/Leeds services being strengthened to four coaches. I'd certainly use the service more. Although cynically, I suspect that even if/when the platform work is done, it will turn out that there won't be any units available to do this.

Is ‘train station’ replacing ‘railway station’ in UK passenger rail terminology?

When I lived down south it was almost always "railway station", but when I moved to the east midlands forty-odd years ago it seemed to be mostly "train station". Does anyone else think that it's at least partly a regional thing, even if "train station" is maybe becoming more common everywhere?

    Idea for Buxton line improvements

So it's only about a 50 mile round trip from Piccadilly to Buxton and back, one third currently under the wires, (with a 20 minute+ dwell time at Buxton for the use of a short top-up section if it was even needed). Isn't this well within the capabilities of a battery/overhead hybrid? I'm a great...

York station Lowther Terrace (Holgate) exit

So, I've looked at the linked article and I'm a little bit familiar with the area as a visitor, and it looks like a big improvement. But I don't really understand how, with the bridge gone, Queen Street is going to rise up on the approach to the junction with Micklegate. Won't it now be on the...

CrossCountry Trains advert banned over ‘insufficient’ free food and drink claims…

The least that XC could do (but in my experience, mostly don't any more) is announce after a stop for any joining passengers that there is no 1st class catering. Then at least anyone who has some snacks or drinks of their own would know they might as well get stuck in rather than wait for the...
