Accused of avoiding 15 fares on trains

If they don’t know you have a railcard could they be looking at 15 journeys made in September and October?

ScotRail - charged Anytime return for off-peak train

Can I just check everyone knows the ticket office is at the top of the stairs on the same side as platform 1 (to Helensburgh, Balloch, Milngavie etc.) and not platform 2 (to Edinburgh, Airdrie, Springburn). The platform 2 side has the shutters down permanently and used to be a sandwich shop...

ScotRail - charged Anytime return for off-peak train

I wonder if Scotrail are now taking a harder line on this. Of course they’re in the wrong if the ticket office was closed and no TVM.

    Scottish Citylink

Apologies for a dumb question - but are Zonecards valid (within the boundaries of course) on Citylink services?

    Pride liveried units

And here it is. With apologies for the bad lighting at Glasgow Queen Street.

ScotRail to hire 42 Revenue Protection Inspectors

Surely in 2023 with so many alternative ways to pay it can only be a fraction of the problem (in terms of fare avoidance) it was in say 2013?

ScotRail to hire 42 Revenue Protection Inspectors

It’s a bad day if they are sending out staff without change of a twenty.

ScotRail to hire 42 Revenue Protection Inspectors

I’ll check at my local station next time I’m passing, it certainly wasn’t available when I last looked.

ScotRail to hire 42 Revenue Protection Inspectors

Not every ticket is available on a TVM either. The SPT roundabout ticket can only be bought on board or at a staffed station.

ScotRail to hire 42 Revenue Protection Inspectors

There’s almost zero chance of that given the number of unstaffed stations and dodgy ticket machines.

ScotRail to hire 42 Revenue Protection Inspectors

One rogue RPI perhaps not however in Scotland that's a political calculation. The every pound regardless of cost mantra taken by some on this forum would very quickly find itself as a vote loser on the other side of the equation with the ever increasing amount of innocent victims pursued for...

ScotRail to hire 42 Revenue Protection Inspectors

One need not look far to find an example of why it's an atrocious idea. https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/14-year-old-school-pupil-accused-of-lying-about-her-age.249785/ Without seeking to duplicate discussion add the headline "Welcome to Humza Yousaf's Scotland" to any of the tabloid...

ScotRail to hire 42 Revenue Protection Inspectors

Perhaps so, however said member of the public doesn’t have a ticket to get home. So has to run the gauntlet again for their journey home. At an industrial scale the savings will be minimal for all but very infrequent travellers. If neither First nor Abellio came up with a penalty fare scheme...

ScotRail to hire 42 Revenue Protection Inspectors

At stations with barriers? The majority of commuters will encounter barriers at the main stations. Commuters between unbarriered stations are the outlier. Even major stations without barriers - High Street mentioned upthread - get targeted action. Although as noted above massively inconvenience...

ScotRail to hire 42 Revenue Protection Inspectors

Therein lies the problem with the assumption (based on observation alone) that fraud/fare evasion must be rife across Scotrail. To save meaningful amounts the average person has to travel irregularly (so as not to be better off with a season ticket), between two open stations and avoid being...

ScotRail to hire 42 Revenue Protection Inspectors

That machine gives off “TV detector van” vibes. Not sure what it’s meaningfully doing other than as a visual deterrent.

    Scottish Citylink

Not particularly scientific but I’ve used it three times (once to the airport in the afternoon, and twice from the airport 1x afternoon, 1x evening) and it’s not very busy. The odd free bus pass journey from Livingston to Airdrie, or Airdrie to Coatbridge.

What would happen if the last train of the night was overcrowded?

Once (and only once) I’ve spotted on RTT Scotrail add a 1am departure from Edinburgh Waverley to Glasgow Queen Street Low Level. With the timings it looked non-stop - approx 45 mins. I don’t recall the circumstances but if I were to bet the Edinburgh festivals coinciding with one of the...

Scotrail Single versus Return ticket price

I wondered (although, the explanation above makes more sense) if this was used to earmark potential fare evasion. A routine traveller from say Bellgrove (unstaffed) to Glasgow Queen Street would know (after 9am with no evening peak) the return was cheaper, someone short faring may not.

Disruption - running fast to make up time

There was political drama about Scotrail “skip-stopping” a few years ago and the practice was discouraged and significantly reduced. All that happened on many routes is they ran ECS to the destination.
