    Border protocols at "Schengen" borders

I regularly (about once a year) cross the Oresunds Bridge on the train between Copenhagen and Malmo. For years now the train has been stopped at the first station going into Sweden for an ID check but only once have I had to produce my passport and that was on a rush hour train when the train...

East-West Rail (EWR): Oxford-Bletchley construction progress

The 196s were not available when then the 230s had to be withdrawn because of lack of maintenance capability. The 153s which had previously operated the line were no longer available as they had gone to TfW. Also remember that Marston Vale is a diesel operated line whereas Bletchley is an...

East-West Rail (EWR): Oxford-Bletchley construction progress

Six class 196 units were included in the WMR order for use on EWR and those units are in the process of being introduced into service and bedded-in on WMR routes. Drivers have been recruited and are in training. The line will be signed off for route learning some time this year. Work to increase...

Why are XC allowed to continue?

The last two times I have travelled from Birmingham to Oxford by train I have gone via Worcester. It takes longer but it is a much better journey and often cheaper. I have also used Chiltern via Haddenham and Tame. The last time I used Cross Country, the 4 car unit started from Oxford because of...

    Class 730 LNR & WMR Delivery/test Updates

How much retraining is actually necessary? Surely the trains should be the same? I realise that there is the difference in length but surely things like stopping distances and stopping points are the same as for a 2 x 2 car train.

    Class 730 LNR & WMR Delivery/test Updates

Just a tip on fares. To Redditch via Bromsgrove (backtracking to Longbridge) is an authorised route. I discovered this a few years ago in the early days of the Bromsgrove electrification so check if this still works.

    National express West Midlands

I think the E is a hang over from Birmingham Corporation. Historically the favourite destination for BCT buses was SERVICE EXTRA in the days when their buses just had a single line display showing the route number and the suburban destination. So the conductor had to shout out the destination on...

East-West Rail (EWR): Oxford-Bletchley construction progress

I am a little confused by this question. The GC Line which crossed the Bletchley Oxford Line no longer exists so I do not understand why you are saying that it now needs an embankment. The embankment in the Calvert area is now needed for the East West Railway to cross over the HS2 line which is...

East-West Rail (EWR): Oxford-Bletchley construction progress

Unless I misunderstood a map a couple of years ago the waste facility will be on the other side of the HS2 and Aylesbury tracks.

East-West Rail (EWR): Oxford-Bletchley construction progress

Surely HS2 have an obligation to restore the Aylesbury Link having severed it at Quainton. However that very likely cannot be enforced until HS2 is completed and we are still talking about mid 2030s for that.

WMR Class 196 Build and Implementation

Regarding the 6 x 2 car units for EWR, have they been designated yet? If so will they be re-liveried? I understand that drivers are now being recruited for this service.

East-West Rail (EWR): Oxford-Bletchley construction progress

Chiltern drivers will also have to do the traction learning on the class 196s which I presume WMR driver trainers will assist in the early days. With route learning it will be the the freight drivers who will learn first so I would assume that the Chiltern driver trainers will join them. The...

Why are XC allowed to continue?

I remember when it was Virgin, Richard Branson boasted about doubling the number of trains omitting to mention that they were half length. I realised how stupid this was in the early days when I saw at New Street a Voyager leaving for Yorkshire and immediately afterwards on another platform a...

    National express West Midlands

I have never used the City Hop fare myself but I would imagine that it was major benefit for people travelling within the Middle Ring Road say from Five Ways into the city centre.

    Journey Planner nonsense message?

Last week in an attempt to assist a friend whose computer experience is limited to email, I checked trains from Nottingham to Gobowen (Shropshire). I first tried Trainline but when I saw a routing via Slough, I did not even look into the actual route. I then tried Transport for Wales. The...

Destination Swapping at Crewe Station 23/2/24

One thing I am getting out of this is, What happens to the crews? Do they end up in another part of the country and have to be sent home as passengers? I can remember at Birmingham New Street being told that our XC train would be departing late because our driver was driving a late-running...

    Class 730 LNR & WMR Delivery/test Updates

As I understand it, 6tph on the Cross City Line is not possible at Kings Norton with 2tph on the Camp Hill Line unless the unused platforms are brought back into use. The unused platforms are used by freight trains and passenger trains which do not stop at Kings Norton.

East-West Rail (EWR): Oxford-Bletchley construction progress

What do you mean by OXD Loop? If you mean EWR, track laying was completed only a few weeks ago and the line is not yet operational. If you mean the line from Aylesbury, that is currently severed at Quainton and will need to be re-instated to access HS2 Depot.

Destination Swapping at Crewe Station 23/2/24

A year ago I was on a TfW train when we got swapped at Shrewsbury. We were on a full 2 car train when we were asked to move to a 4 car train. Good idea but the 4 car train had one car locked out of use and from Shrewsbury to Birmingham more and more people got on.
