End of the Royal Train: alternative uses and what might have been

I think spot hire from LSL (Chairman's Train) or similar is probably the most appropriate going forward, a shame as it is. Whilst the mk2/mk3 currently used are undoubtably 'British' the 'Britishness' of a 8xx unit or mk5's could be called into question at any rate. If there were a spare mk5 set...

Collision with tractor near Leominster (22/05/25)

Much as I do love the 225 sets, I am especially thankful this happened on a lower speed line rather than a higher speed (100mph+). The consequences to the train being propelled at a higher speed would presumably have been more severe with the lighter DVT as we have unfortunately seen with a...

Scottish Grand Tour pass vs. Edinburgh - Arisaig return

I’ve generally found a split at Dalmuir has been a significant saving in years gone by even from Glasgow.

Riga to Tartu - Valga Connections

Just to close this off somewhat and help others. We arrived at 12:21 and then departed at 12:24 with a cross platform interchange. Very efficient and a lovely ride on one of the older vivi trains. Even had a chance to grab a quick picture of an older loco at Valga.

Riga to Tartu - Valga Connections

That's great to understand. Yes I'm half tempted to spend more time in Valga but that would then be quite a hit to our time in Tartu. Brilliant photos too. Unless someone else pipes up here to say otherwise I reckon we'll risk it.

Riga to Tartu - Valga Connections

Hi, We are looking to do a trip from Riga to Tartu (Estonia). As part of this my understanding is that we need to change trains in Valga and this is fairly straight forward. I know they have recently redone the timetable to make connections better. We could take the 'international' service...

I didn’t know they had that!! Rolling stock you didn’t know that company operated.

Arguably the pair of 68's that were used was even stranger as the DBSO was incompatible with the 68. IIRC two 68's on a two coach DRS branded train was quite the sight with a northern conductor. I presume with another battery equipped 777? I think for me one of the strangest was an LNER(It may...

Network Rail Class 950 to be disposed

Royal Mail to cease using trains

Extremely sad to see these going to scrap so soon. Can't help but feel this just about sums up everything wrong with the current economy.

What rolling stock would you order from Hitachi / Alstom

Ah of course - good point.
  12. E100

150's. They belong in the cess pool of history.

Not a fan of the class either. With Northerns procurement of new trains and TfW 197’s still coming on stream is there any that are planned to be used for the foreseeable?

What rolling stock would you order from Hitachi / Alstom

Bit of nice speculation thread. If you had the power to order stock what you order and why. 1713684907 To kick us off, I’d probably look to extend a lot of LNER IEP’s by an extra coach to 10 and/or then extend some of the 5 coach sets to 9/10. I’d probably offer Lumo an nearly at cost deal to...

LNER Class 800 Flashing BIL on last coach

Hi, just saw two Azumas depart with a flashing Bodyside Indicator Light on the last coach when departing. Wondered whether anyone knew what this was for?

[Trivia] Passenger Trains That Often Carry No Passengers For Entire Route

Ah that explains the lack of stop at WBQ. I presumed as much in terms of the Cheshire Lines. Thanks for the info.

[Trivia] Passenger Trains That Often Carry No Passengers For Entire Route

The only time I've done this I was the only one on board. Ran fast to Stockport via Altrincham as a route learner but now runs via Warrington despite not actually stopping at Warrington! if anyone knows why let me know.

    Class 175 future speculation

I would agree that Scotrail would be a good choice. If they could take RETB then they could be ideal for Inverness to replace the 158's which could then be used on the West Highland Lines (assuming gauging can be sorted) replacing the 156's. Pair them up as 2 + 3 car sets and have them run...
