Trivia: Rare and unusual bus and coach types

Certainly the later batches Reading and Colchester operated were ECW designs built elsewhere. The E registration Olympians at Reading were built by Optare to the ECW designs and even carried Optare makers' plates inside. Colchester had some F and H reg ones, which were built at the Leyland...

    Former British car marque revivals.

Perhaps Frisky or Beardmore? Car purchases can often be split into two or three categories, I'd say something like the following: Those that don't care about the badge Those that always buy a "Ford" or "Vauxhall" etc because they always have Those who see the badge as a status symbol I'm not...

Possibility of TfL taking over Stratford - Meridian Water local services as an extension of the Overground.

Transferring the service to TfL will make it better because Magic™. Or something. Saying that GA shouldn't be operating "local" services....by that logic East Midlands Railway shouldn't be running to Liverpool or Norwich. If it works as it is, and given no service improvement is likely through...

    Aviation trip reports thread.

Four hours sat by the repair hangars at Luton Airport on a Wizz A321 originally bound for Ljubljana, as they couldn't find spare buses. Unfortunately they couldn't start repairs until everyone had got off the plane! We had only made it as far as Frankfurt before turning back due to a fault...

    London Buses Discussion

Edinburgh for example seems to manage just fine with long-wheelbase deckers and the far longer E400XLB's. London definitely isn't a special case in terms of road layouts.

Cross Country should abolish first class until capacity issues are addressed

People travel on the overnight coaches because they are very cheap. Good luck offering rail fares that match without insane levels of subsidy. Those that fly would continue to do so because it's faster than either mode and doesn't involve travelling overnight in a seat. What traffic...

    London Overground line names announced

It'd be interesting to see how many different shades of puce are present on those getting angry in this thread so far.

    Heating in electric buses

Ssh, don't bring logic into it! I'd have thought that at the very least some from of heating would be provided for windscreen demisting, alongside battery maintenance. Most modern electric vehicles use an AC compressor and/or a heater to keep the battery pack within a certain operating...

    Flights you have been on

Interesting to note earlier comments about Wizz. The first and hopefully last time I flew with them, my first attempt to fly from Luton to Ljubljana had to turn back over Frankfurt due to engine problems. Seem to remember being texted a £1.50 voucher to use at airport outlets while we were stuck...

Trips by Bus and Coach: Your reports

Pontypridd's scene has changed a lot since I was last there in 2012 or so. Back then it was a sea of Veolia liveried tat alongside the new E300 fleets Stagecoach had just got for the X4. Remember having a trip on the Edwards 400E from Cardiff later that day and bagging their Ex-Cardiff Optare...

    First Eastern Counties

I remember travelling on some of those tridents back in their London days and they felt worn out then, the refurbishments before delivery to Norwich didn't help much. After 20+ years they're definitely overdue for replacement, along with the B7TLs...I remember those President bodied ones being...

Stagecoach East (Bedford, Cambridge, Huntingdon and Peterborough)

The AE10XXX E400s may have new coats of paint but otherwise most are in rather poor condition internally with threadbare seats. The Gold spec E400 Scanias started appearing on the town routes rather than the 13 simply as they had started getting very unreliable. That batch had never seemed...

    East Anglia Bus Scene

Barring the Ann Suckling Road extension and changes to routes at peak times, yes...it's basically the pre Oct 2022 timetable routing. However the X13 will now be running all day M-F which is definitely welcome. The 131/131A weren't popular, and running empty 'deckers around the town all day was...

    Public Station Pianos.

People waiting for friends/partners/etc on arriving trains aren't passengers, much the same goes for anyone popping into the station shops...and any enthusiasts hanging around for pictures or "ticking off" numbers for sight. Your judgment feels rather black and white, should they all be booted...

Why do major European bus manufacturers still avoid the UK?

So there wasn't a monopoly in bus manufacturers before 1985? Leyland owned AEC and Daimler by then, and the NBC only really purchased Bristol VR's or Leyland Nationals with nothing else getting a look in apart from tiny batches for one-off requirements. Your comment that privatisation caused...

    New London Airport

Good luck expanding Cambridge airport. It's surrounded on all sides by housing or industrial zones and the owners plan to close it for conversion to housing in 2030 or so.

Can and will train seats become comfortable again?

Seats in the 745s/755s are perfectly fine, I've done a few longer trips on them without issue. Seats in the 170s that GA used to operate were also comfortable. I actually prefer the 700s seating to that of the "Southern spec" 387s also found on the Kings Cross runs, though. 700s may be firm but...
