GBRF confirms conversion of Class 56s to Class 69s

They can technically do what ever a 66's does (or some I'm told) but due to training requirements you are unlikely to see them on engineering trains to and from (particularly larger) possessions.

Clayton Class 18 on a low loader

There was talk a while ago of one being trialed at Felixstowe GB but was determined a battery loco to be to impractical.

    Car Transporter Trains

    They are shipped into Dagenham.

    745104 Damaged

IF USA standards are more stringent then it stands to reason their trains would come out better. But what are you basing that opinion on?

GBRf Class 99 - 30 locomotives now ordered

What is the fuel tank capacity on the 99s as I imagine that will be a considerable factor on where these end up on diesel mode. Also the loss off 550hp is no small thing....whether the modern internals of the 99s offset that we will have to see.

GBRf Class 99 - 30 locomotives now ordered

Indeed, but a lot of them have alternative paths via GEML/WCML/ECML and a lot can change in 3 and a half years. The size of the fuel tank will also be a factor.

GBRf Class 99 - 30 locomotives now ordered

thanks, now added :) In all honesty I am not too familiar with stuff up that way.

GBRf Class 99 - 30 locomotives now ordered

It's certainly expanded over the years somewhat! Forgot 4L04/4M04 and 4L14/4E14, now added.

GBRf Class 99 - 30 locomotives now ordered

Rough current estimate. These don't include the likes of Daventry or Tees and don't include stuff that is on the horizon. 15xFelixstowe 4L29/4M29 (Birch) 4L23/4M23 (Hams) 4L21/4E21 (Donny Rail Port) 4L20/4E20 (Masborough) 4L43/4E43 (iPort) 4L02/4M02 (Hams) 4L03/4E03 (Tinsley) 4L28/4E28 (iPort)...

Discussion about TOPS allocations in the context of recent locomotive orders

There is a finite amount of numbers available, if you believe we will run out of numbers then that will happen whether 99 is used before 94-96 or not. Its all pretty irrelevant anyway as tops classification is just to identify within tops so I don’t see what difference using 99 first makes.

GBRf Class 99 - 30 locomotives now ordered

Fair enough I take that back then sorry!

GBRf Class 99 - 30 locomotives now ordered

As others have said, these will be used for the Intermodal business, the 73's and 92's wont be going anywhere. Given the vast job of training drivers and shunters on the new locos I don't expect them to be on anything else unless its an emergency. The first loco won't turn a wheel for at least 3...

    A question about brakes

There are some freight trains that operate as twin pipe brake. Network Rail's High Output Ballast Cleaner and Track Renewal System being examples. Some aggregate wagons too.

GBRf Class 99 - 30 locomotives now ordered

Can't see that being shoe-horned into an existing container terminal.

GBRf Class 99 - 30 locomotives now ordered

Speeds not high but the branch is very stop/start so smaller engine would affect acceleration. Plus the bank climbing up from Ipswich to Westerfield and out of the terminals.

GBRf Class 99 - 30 locomotives now ordered

    Thanks for the extra info!

GBRf Class 99 - 30 locomotives now ordered

Thanks. Was trying to see what might be available to maintain performance and timetable on the Felixstowe branch.

What is the largest diesel engine that will fit?

Discussion about TOPS allocations in the context of recent locomotive orders

Don't think there is any hard rule that says new classes have to be sequential.
