Not linked to the refresh or current work trips but as this is an active thread about the 16x Turbos, I’ll include this here.

165112 has had its middle vehicle removed temporarily (wheelset repairs) so will be cutting about as a 2 car.

I assume 5Q82 was 166210 yesterday, but I am puzzled as to what is on 5Q23. Perhaps it is my mistake, but I thought that 166201 was the only 166 that has yet to visit Doncaster. RTT shows 166201 on 1F20 from Pompey, so 5Q23 can't be that. So perhaps it is a 166 making a second visit, or perhaps it is a 165?

Dire service currently. Very poor show on Friday, 22 Nov. Both the 19.23 and 20.23 services from Gomshall were cancelled due to train faults. No other services made additional stops to compensate.
Today, the 07.24 from Dorking to Reading was cancelled - the service from Gatwick had to terminate at Reading due to a fault. The 07.49 from Dorking to Reading was 6 minutes late into Guildford even though it left Redhill 1 minute late.

Is there any timescale on when it's going back to a three-car?

Does it not a lot more work to reform the set, repair the wheels, and form it all up again, than just do the repair.

Or is this simply because repairing wheel sets takes ages because of lack of spares, or repair capacity. If so what do they intend to avoid this happening again in remaining expected 6-9 years of 166s life

No. It is relatively easy to split and form up Turbo cars and a wheelset repair usually takes a time, especially if you have to not only drop and replace the wheelset but then tyre turn the rest on the car to match the wheelset you have just replaced.

So when you are short of units, taking a centre car out is usually the easiest way to keep the set in traffic. Reading did this for years with the Turbos when the required availability demanded it.

Can someone remind me what it is Doncaster are doing? As I understand it 201 and the other formerly all over blue 166s were among the first in class to get the refresh.

I don’t know the exact goings on but it’s heavy maintenance work being carried out at Doncaster. The refresh program is complete and it was all carried out at Wolverton.

Yes I knew it was complete which is why I was confused that they were being sent away. Thanks for the clarification.

Did the early refurbs ever go back in to get their carpet removed?

Surely not another Gomshall resident here!? I completely agree - a dire service and of course it's the standard thing to miss out the already-sparsely-served minor stations when running late, making for some huge gaps.

After the completion of the refresh program for the 16x fleet at Wolverton back in September, it’s time for another works program to commence!

This Saturday (18/01) 165110 ‘should be‘ the first of the fleet to head back to Wolverton for overhaul of it’s saloon air cooling system.

Blimey, all the more reason for me to hope the 158s stay away from Portsmouth - Cardiff then! Surprised at this given the Turbos can't have all that much life left?

They have got as long a life, as repair money continues to be thrown at them. Last I heard was replacement was expected 2029-2032

However still don't know date for GWR nationalisation, or when an order for replacement trains is likely to be signed, so my guess is 2031-2033, by which time will be about 41 years old.

Surprised to see it's the air cooling on the 165s that is being overhauled - in my experience, the air cooling works very well and seems reliable, whereas the air conditioning on the 166s seems to almost never work and these units become unpleasantly hot and stuffy in the summer. Any indications as to whether the 166s will get an equivalent treatment?

There's 5Q03 0945 Wolverton Centre Sidings to Reading TCD in the system for Saturday too, will that be a 16x? Can't remember if there is one there currently.

@FGW_DID stated that it was the whole 16x fleet? It's certainly the 166's that are in dire need of it!
