Thereafter it seemed to follow me around at times
I seemed to have the same problem with 47 545......after it caught fire on me at Acton on the Up overnight Fishguard boat train in June 1978. Unfortunately it was repaired and proceeded to follow me around like a puppy for the next several years. I seem to remember that it also caught fire at Micheldever on the Poole-Newcastle a couple of years earlier - or was it later? However I was not on board the train on that occasion.

I hope you found The Brunswick just up the road from Derby station. Cracking pub with proper beer
.....and just a couple of hundred yards further up the road is the Alexandra which, as well as having a good range of well-kept proper beer, nowadays has a class 37 cab in the garden for young enthusiasts to play in.....although that wouldn't have been there back in the day!

Yes, these were the pubs we visited. And of other occasions too!

On a previous outing, after an evening out in Derby one of our group failed to get back to the station in time for the last train to Birmingham. He then took a unit to either Stoke or Crewe, thinking there might be a connection to Brum (there wasn't) and it got a bit sketchy after that..

We has the same locos, on the same day, but on different trains !

Saturday 31st August 2019 - Not quite so far back in the day. I was returning to Scotland after an excellent Steam Gala at the North Norfolk Railway. Sitting at Peterborough, just as we departed for Edinburgh, on the adjacent platform arrived a Leeds service behind 91110.... my last required 91 ! So after some quick timetable consultation:

91122 0700 Kings X-Edinburgh (Peterborough-York)
185123 0801 Newcastle-Liverpool (York-Leeds)
91110 0945 Leeds-Kings X (to Wakefield W)
800112 0803 Kings X-Leeds (from Wakefield W)
185113 0847 Manchester Airport-Middlesboro (Leeds-York)
91124 0900 Kings X-Edinburgh (from York)
385116 1345 Edinburgh-Queen St

Back in the day The Brunswick didn’t exist. Most of that area and all of the terraced houses were empty and due to be demolished. It was a terrible rat infested dump. We used a lot of the area to shoot a film for a project at college, would’ve been 1979/80 during block release from BREL.

I can’t remember the last time I drank in the Alex, certain there was no cab out back.

Lol! I did a similar thing in reverse in 1981. Went to a Heavy Metal festival event at Port Vale stadium (Ozzy Osbourne & Motörhead were on the bill) there were shuttle buses back to Stoke on Trent station. By the time we got there the last unit to Derby had long gone. We took the first train that arrived which was heading to New Street. Being the early hours of Sunday morning there was nothing going anywhere. We slept upstairs on the bridge - at least it was warmish. Got the first train to Derby and then had another hour or so to wait for the first train to Long Eaton. I went straight to my local pub and bumped into some other folks who we’d seen the previous day who went by car. They were rather surprised that I had only just got back some 12 hours after the show had finished

31st August 1982

After lots of Duffs the previous day, today was rather better:

31209 Sunderland - Newcastle 1N04
40033 Newcastle - Carlisle 1M04
25231 Carlisle - Annan 1S37
27022 Annan - Carlisle 1M06
40033 Carlisle - Alnmouth 1S15
47437 Alnmouth - Newcastle 1E21

Not a bad day!

31st August 1985

Earlier in the summer, when we were in Scotland, we had missed out on a pair of 20s on the Scarborough - Newcastle. Fortunately, there was a repeat performance:

47312 Newcastle - Darlo 1P38
47409 Darlo - Durham 1E52
47283 Durham - Darlo 1A61
20013 + 20047 Darlo - Newcastle 1N35
47195 Newcastle - Durham 1M76
47345 Durham - Newcastle 1S94

Even the Duffs were more interesting than usual!

31st August 1986

Last unit to Carlisle, ready to start a Freedom of Scotland. While the 37/4s were dominating the West Highland, Kyle and Far North lines, there was plenty more on offer. Stay tuned...

31st August 1987

47425 Newcastle - Sunderland 2E36
47411 Sunderland - Newcastle 2M39

31st August 1992

Bank Holiday Monday. Time for a trip to the seaside on an East Midlands Rover:

47808 New St - Derby via Litchfield
31174 + 31512 Derby - Skegness

Boo! Where's the 20s???

I wasn't going to wait around for them back out, so jumped on the first available unit.

91018 Grantham - Doncaster
91031 Doncaster - Peterborough
86248 Coventry - New St

31st August 1993

91014 Newcastle - Doncaster
47714 Sheffield - Derby
47825 Derby - Loughborough

IIRC, the two Duffs were on a loco-hauled set in lieu of a Tram. When 714 was ripped at Derby, I was hoping for something more interesting.

I was there too....in the large spectators' area on the West side of the line where the extensive - once electrified - marshalling yards used to be South of Shildon station. The cavalcade started with the replica 'Locomotion No. 1' and ended with the prototype HST....with lots of steam locomotives of varying ages, sizes and companies of origin in between. Before and after the cavalcade - which took place under a full line possession - there was an intensive shuttle service of seven and eight car DMUs rattling up and down between Darlington and Shildon, with seemingly just about every DMU vehicle which could turn a wheel from Darlington, South Gosforth and Neville Hill Depots being pressed into service. Although I didn't have any loco-hauled travel on the day, I did notice that there were several specials to and from Darlington for the event....including 40 032 on an LNER Society charter returning to Euston in the evening.
After the cavalcade reached Heighington most locomotives ran along the single track section to Darlington and were stabled in sidings north of the station, near to where the steam shed once stood. I can remember going there after the cavalcade to enjoy the atmosphere and to take photographs. The scene resembled the area of a steam depot, apart from the spotless condition of the locomotives. A day I will always remember. Will there be a repeat in 2025?

At New Street the train re-engined to a class 87, so I sat tight, and did the train all the way from Plymouth to Glasgow. (That – in my view – is what All Line Rovers were mainly for, i.e. to make the long runs on services you wouldn’t normally get the chance to do, like my Paddington – Penzance with 50018 the previous day).

I never did an ALR but I share that view. The closest I got was in 1986 when astute purchasing of a few Fab Feb Savers got me some very long distances covered over a period of three weeks for a very favourable total price. You'll have to wait almost six months to hear more, lol.

I did a priv ALR for a week in the Spring of 1983....but, sadly, I can't find my notes from that trip. Maybe they will turn up eventually....watch this space!

We used to book priv returns from Acnasheen to Templecombe when we got four free passes per annum. Valid for three months and rarely gripped. Occasionally might get a comment like “you’ve done some miles on this”, or “where you going? Isn’t Templecomb in Devon?” Not far off an ALR ;)

After staying overnight with a friend in Liverpool, I still had some work to do in Manchester:
DMU Liverpool Lime Street – Earlestown
40016 1353 Earlestown – Manchester Victoria
Then after work I headed off to cover the dragging between Preston and Crewe:
40042 2225 Manchester Victoria – Warrington Bank Quay
86001 2257 Warrington Bank Quay – Preston
… and so the long overnight fester at Preston begins …

Monday 01/09/80
After ending up at Manchester Victoria with my trolley when I should have been back at Euston long ago, there was only one sensible way out:
40083 0055 Manchester Victoria – Leeds
For once this train got a class 40 on it. It was even a York allocated 40, so I had every expectation it would work through to York. Not so. At Leeds there was an unscheduled loco change, and 46029 appeared. It was 200+ hours overdue a “B” exam, restricted No Heat, Vacuum Only, and on Saturday it had worked Leeds – Morecambe and return as a last resort when everything else had failed. Now it was my turn to have it. Cheers!
46029 0218 Leeds – York
At least there was some decent traction to take me south from York:
55013 0341 York – Kings Cross
… followed by the usual Monday Morning stroll along the Euston Road with a trolley, urns, bags of sugar, MaxPax coffee cups, etc.

Tuesday 01/09/81
Still in “rest and recuperation” mode following an operation on my foot, along with my girlfriend we left Plymouth and went to visit her parents in Abergavenny:
50038 0030 Plymouth – Bristol Temple Meads
31258 0030 Plymouth – Newton Abbot pilot
DMU Bristol Temple Meads – Cardiff
33014 0750 Cardiff – Abergavenny
Having dropped my girlfriend off, it was time to head home alone:
33014 1438 Abergavenny – Cardiff
At Cardiff I had a very specific target in mind. There was a summer-dated Fishguard Harbour – Paddington service which ran non-stop from Cardiff to Paddington, and which had been producing class 37s fairly regularly. I stood at the platform end at Cardiff and waited. They announced a train to Portsmouth Harbour on platform 2, and 37187 rolled in on 11 Mk 1s. “That’s the Paddington service” I thought. Sure enough the trains had got confused, and it took a few minutes to ensure there were no Portsmouth passengers on board in error.
37187 1550 Cardiff – Paddington
We travelled at a steady 84 – 86 mph most of the way, going slightly over this going down Somerford bank, but didn’t touch 90 anywhere on the trip. A long non-stop run with a required 37 on a nice sunny afternoon with the windows open, working flat out. Bliss.

Thursday 01/09/83
Carrying on the All Line Rover – it’s Far North time:
47427 0110 Perth – Inverness
37114 0640 Inverness – Georgemas Jn
37261 0914 Brora – Georgemas Jn pilot
37261 1045 Georgemas Jn – Thurso
37261 1200 Thurso – Georgemas Jn
37114 1224 Georgemas Jn – Inverness
37183 1740 Inverness – Brora
37025 1946 Brora – Inverness
47707 2350 Inverness – Glasgow Queen Street

Saturday 01/09/84
After my overnight to Stranraer and back, I’d gone straight in to work, so the sensible option on finishing work would have been to go back to my digs and sleep. However there was a DMU shortage in Edinburgh, and one DMU turn was being loco hauled for the day, with required 25181 having been borrowed for the task:
47711 1430 Glasgow Queen Street – Edinburgh
DMU Edinburgh – Cowdenbeath
25181 1710 Cowdenbeath – Edinburgh
25181 1808 Edinburgh – Cowdenbeath
25181 1950 Cowdenbeath – Edinburgh
47710 2100 Edinburgh – Glasgow Queen Street

Monday 01/09/86
After staying overnight in Stirling, I had to be at work that afternoon, so:
47701 1120 Stirling – Glasgow Queen Street
37051 1220 Glasgow Queen Street – Dumbarton Central
EMU Dumbarton Central – Charing Cross (the Glaswegian version!).

Tuesday 01/09/92
The Waterloo – Exeter line was having a bit of a spasm today, including required 47371 allocated to the 1738 Exeter – Waterloo. A nice move emerged, whereby 33102 was working down on the 1815 Waterloo – Exeter, which made at Salisbury:
33102 1815 Waterloo – Salisbury
47711 2000 Salisbury – Basingstoke
Oh dear, not quite what I had in mind. What had happened to 47371?
205 029 Basingstoke – Reading.
(I never did have 47371 for haulage).

TUESDAY 1st SEPTEMBER 1981:

A mysterious little excursion during office hours to have a very short ride on an 09 25 Aberdeen-Birmingham New Street relief, which I had hoped - in vain as it turned out - would produce a forty. What it did produce was a long string of LMR mark 1 CKs, most of which had been declassified. Would have been great for an overnight trip!

045 Hyndland-Glasgow QS LL
048 Glasgow QS LL-Coatbridge Sunnyside
Walk: Coatbridge Sunnyside-Coatbridge Central
47 102 Coatbridge Central-Mossend
85 018 Mossend-Motherwell
314 216 Motherwell-Glasgow Central LL via Blantyre
022 + 043 Glasgow QS LL-Hyndland

Consist of 09 25 (relief) Aberdeen-Birmingham NS: M35330 (BSK), M16156/16188/16157/16180/16125/16194 (CK), M25735 (SK), M35322 (BSK). Load 9, vacuum-braked/dual heat.

I honestly can't remember the pretext for this officially-sanctioned trip out of the office. Perhaps it was to do a passenger count....or monitor the time taken changing locos at Mossend. Who knows? At least the Duff was required, although the Roarer wasn't.

1st September 1982

31209 Sunderland - Newcastle 1N04 (2 days in a row)
45131 Newcastle - York 1O19
47326 York - Darlo 1E79
46027 Darlo - York 1M75

Now normally at this point I would take the 45/1 on 1E55 back to Newcastle, but I was 'forced' to stray outside of area:

40162 York - Leeds 1M74

There was then a problem on the line between Leeds and York. My train back home arrived, the loco ran round and we took a bit of a diversion:

45057 Leeds - Newcastle (via Castleford) 1E88

1st September 1982

A straightforward move to cover the ex-Yarmouth:

47564 Newcastle - Darlo 1E36

Word reached us that the Yarmouth was a 31. And it had failed north of York. Fortunately Darlington depot has a suitable rescue loco available:

37009 (+31208) Darlo - Newcastle 1N13

1st September 1986

Sorry - I was getting muddled up yesterday, it was today that I took the last unit to Carlisle ahead of starting a Freedom.

1st September 1992

Still out and about on an East Midlands Ranger.

86245 New St - Coventry
47825 Doncaster - Derby
86219 Coventry - New St

Obviously I did not walk between stations! Lots of unit and HST moves.

No, not at all. It’s my earliest specific train related memory - standing on a crowded platform 3 at Coventry as it rolled by at the head of something off the Leamington line. I remember being impressed by the length of the nameplate

Thereafter it seemed to follow me around at times
Know that feeling, 47555 followed me everywhere for a long time, then it seemed to get overtaken by 47444 which popped up all over the UK.

11.16 Tyndrum Upper to Mallaig (08.36 from Glasgow Queen St)
Tyndrum to Bridge of Orchy 20089
Bridge of Orchy to Fort William 20116+20089
Fort William to Mallaig 20036

16.00 Mallaig to Fort William 20036 (a class 27 worked this train forward to Glasgow)

(On the same day 16.25 Fort William to Mallaig (and 18.45 return) worked by one of 20116 or 20089 (my notes don't record which, but class 20s were less unusual on this particular working))

Tuesday 28th August 1979
11.16 Tyndrum Upper to Mallaig
Tyndrum to Fort William 25239
Fort William to Mallaig 27017

This is fascinating info. I knew 20089 had set off on the 0836, I was sent a pic of it at Dumbarton, but I never knew 20116 was added at BoO and that 20036 went forward to Mallaig. The following day, 29/8/78, 20089 worked the 1250 Mallaig-Glasgow QS, to Fort William and the train went forward with 20109 to Glasgow QS! I assume based on that, 20089 worked the 0600 Glasgow-Mallaig, from Fort William

Thanks for your added info. re the following day which, if I was aware, has long since slipped my mind.
Class 27 availability must have been pretty chronic those two days, and not even cl25s to substitute.

EDIT: Normally the loco working forward FW to Mallaig on the 06.00 was the loco which had worked up from Mallaig on the first train, did that perhaps work through to Glasgow on this occasion or ..........?

50041 Oxford to Coventry, 1M07 14.50 Paddington to Lime St
87028 Coventry to BNS, 1M07
86247 BNS to Birmingham International, 1A?? 18.18 BNS to Euston
87010 Birmingham International to Wolverhampton, 1G?? 17.10 Euston to Wolves
86233 Wolverhampton to Crewe, 1M?? 15.00 Brighton to Man Picc
86255 Crewe to WBQ, 1P79 18.05 Euston to Blackpool

Saturday 2nd September 1989

50035 Oxford to Paddington, 1A?? 18.00 Oxford to Paddington
EMU Victoria to Dover Western Docks, 20.35 service

Off to live in West Germany for a while. Wasn't sure how long (turned out to be 10 months or so). Bizarre incident at the ticket office at Oxford where I was writing out a cheque to pay for our tickets when I got a vicious jab in the back from fella behind me in the queue and the accusation of being a Thatcherite (I think because writing out a cheque was slowing the queue, I've never quite understood the connection). That's Oxford for ya.

In the wee small hours of a Sunday morning you could usually count on a class 40 appearing on one or other of the overnight drags between Preston and Crewe or vice versa. In this instance it was a returning Edinburgh – Bristol ADEX which produced 40199, so I stowed away and made myself comfortable for the journey around Manchester:
40199 0254 Preston – Crewe via Bolton, Manchester Victoria, Denton Jn, Stockport
Of course there was no booked passenger stop at Crewe, so I had to make a middle road exit!
DMU Crewe – Manchester Piccadilly
Then, after working my shift in the buffet at Manchester Victoria:
40034 2225 Manchester Victoria – Bangor
Cab ride throughout. The train continued to Holyhead, but I had to get back to Manchester.

Friday 02/09/83
Carrying on the All Line Rover, it’s West Highland Time:
37022 0600 Glasgow Queen Street – Spean Bridge
37012 0934 Spean Bridge – Bridge of Orchy
37190 1050 Bridge of Orchy – Fort William
37112 1245 Fort William – Glenfinnan
37022 1325 Glenfinnan – Fort William
37190 1510 Fort William – Dumbarton Central
EMU Dumbarton Central – Glasgow Central
I need to head back towards England now, as my rover only has one more day of validity. I came across to Glasgow Central expecting to depart electrically hauled up the WCML, but required 27007 was sitting there on the 2200 to Stranraer. How could I refuse – especially as I know there will be an immediate escape available at Stranraer, on the summer-dated Stranraer – Blackpool, which is an excellent train for dossing in …
27007 2200 Glasgow Central – Stranraer

Sunday 02/09/84
Some days are not quite as impressive as others …
I heard that required NB 27029 was out on the Dundee circuit, so I went to have it:
47710 1200 Glasgow Queen Street – Haymarket
27029 1321 Haymarket – Dundee
Job done. Now, what else is about …
27042 1528 Dundee – Edinburgh
Sometimes the Carstairs portions produce “interesting” locos …
47708 1810 Edinburgh – Carstairs
47408 1845 Carstairs – Edinburgh
… and sometimes they don’t! Retire to pub, until …
47711 2130 Edinburgh – Glasgow Queen Street

Tuesday 02/09/86
Taking my first son to visit his grandparents for the first time:
86412 1040 Glasgow Central – Birmingham New Street
Unknown to me, the wires fell down right behind this train in the Wigan area, and several pairs of 20s were used in the resultant dragging. Oh well!
50046 1515 Birmingham New Street – Exeter St Davids
Having done the vast amount of the journey to Plymouth in a nice Mk 2 compartment, we now had to transfer to an HST, as the train from Glasgow was going to Paignton.
43021 + 43020 1916 Exeter St Davids – Plymouth

Saturday 02/09/89
Straight off night shift at Paddington onto a day of cranking, en route home to Crewe.
50024 0705 Paddington – Birmingham New Street via Reading, Coventry
47971 1015 Birmingham New Street – Gloucester, failed.
47245 1107 Gloucester – Cardiff
47245 was required, so that was a bonus. It has since been purchased by West Coast, so I’ve had it several further times on steam railtours.
At Cardiff, the train re-engined as booked, for the main event of the day:
37428 1218 Cardiff – Tenby via Landore, Carmarthen
37428 1616 Tenby – Cardiff via Carmarthen, Landore
Back at Cardiff the 37 was replaced by a 47, as booked:
47829 1850 Cardiff – Cheltenham Spa
I alighted at Cheltenham to drop back onto a pair of 31s up the Lickey:
31432 + 31452 2112 Cheltenham Spa – Wolverhampton via New Street, Aston, Bescot
The 31s were both dud, but I took them for the entertainment value.
DMU Wolverhampton – Stafford
47456 2335 Stafford – Crewe

2nd September 1982

31209 Sunderland - Newcastle 1N04 (Three days in a row!)
45148 Newcastle - Ferryhill 1O19

The Wagon wasn't in good health. Big rescue loco on its way...

45044 Ferryhill - York 1O19 (Oh well!)
47291 York - Darlo 1E79
47473 Darlo - York 1M75

On arrival at York, 40162 was standing in the station right in the spot where the Deltic used to stand waiting to take over the Plymouth - Edinburgh (1S27). Of course, 1S27 was now an HST, so goodness knows what the 40 was doing there. We did the usual move:

45143 York - Newcastle 1E55

Then what should come whistling round the corner - 40162 on 1S27, loco hauled in place of the Tram!

40162 Newcastle - Berwick 1S27
47525 Berwick - Newcastle 1E21

2nd September 1985

Still some interesting traction substituting for failed units:

37063 Hexham - Dunston 2E48

2nd September 1986

First day of Freedom of Scotland No. 3...

86255 Carlisle - Mossend 1S07
37406 Mossend - Cowlairs 1S07
47713 (What?!?) Cowlairs - Queen St 1S07
47604 Glasgow C - Troon 2K45
47617 Troon - Glasgow C 2K50

We were obviously expecting something slightly better here! Anyway, time to enjoy some Syphons...

37422 Queen St - Arrochar & Tarbet 1Y11
37424 Arrochar & Tarbet - Helensburgh U 1T12
37425 Helensburgh U - Arrochar & Tarbet 1Y21
37404 Arrochar & Tarbet - Dumbarton C 1T18
37424 Dumbarton C - Crianlarich 1Y13
37422 Crianlarich - Queen St 1T28
27042 Queen St - Stirling 1L37
47705 Stirling - Queen St 1T32
37401 Queen St - Larbert 1L39
47117 Haymarket - Waverley 2J24
47117 Waverley - Dundee 2J33
26032 Dundee - Perth 2Y34 (This was a real chuck-out turn, that's why we covered it)
47519 Perth - Larbert 1D32

A B&B in Larbert? Er, no! TBC...

2nd September 1988

31196 Dunston - Newcastle 2E44

My last move before joining the ranks of the employed.

2nd September 1989

90023 New St - Wolves
50024 Wolves - New St
85011 New St - Carlisle

This is why I didn't travel to Newcastle direct on an HST.

2nd September 1990

90039 Carlisle - New St (via Perry Barr)

I made the mistake of vacating my seat for someone standing as I thought we were close to New St. We then turned left to take a 'scenic route' and I ended up stood in the vestibule for rather longer than planned.

After completing my summer season (in the kitchens) at Butlins, Ayr, I had to come home to sort out a college place:
47530 1241 Ayr – Carlisle via Kilmarnock
87015 1509 Carlisle – Preston
DMU Preston – Manchester Victoria
46056 “The Ultimate Wagon” 1756 Manchester Victoria – York

Monday 03/09/79
I had alighted at Bangor off 40034 on the 2234 Manchester Victoria – Holyhead intending to do the Up Irish Mail to get me to Crewe, and from there back to Manchester. Things took a different turn when required 40121 arrived on the Down Irish Mail (booked a 47/4), so I had to do that to Holyhead.
40121 0148 Bangor – Holyhead
There then followed a lengthy fester (hard orange plastic seats, bright lights) in the waiting room at Holyhead before the first train out:
47456 0627 Holyhead – Crewe
EMU Crewe – Manchester Piccadilly

Wednesday 03/09/80
I had just started work as a booking office clerk at Oakleigh Park, from where I could see the various comings and goings on the ECML. One train that was a regular class 40 diagram was the 1630 Kings Cross – Peterborough, which you could do all the way to Peterborough for a Deltic back on the 1630 Hull – Kings Cross, like this:
40165 1630 Kings Cross – Peterborough
55018 1854 Peterborough – Kings Cross

Saturday 03/09/83
It’s the last day of my All Line Rover, and I’ve ended up at Stranraer, looking forward to a good dossy overnight in the Mk 1 compartment stock on the 0135 Stranraer – Blackpool North. I knew I’d get a good doss as there would be nothing worth staying awake for, as the train was booked a 47/4:
37102 0135 Stranraer – Carlisle
That’s a very unexpected bonus!
At Carlisle the 37 came off, as booked, to be replaced by 81018:
81018 0528 Carlisle – Preston
After breakfast at Preston, I heard an announcement for a relief to Edinburgh… another Roarer
85032 0840 Preston – Carlisle
I really did need to think about getting home to York now, so I decided to cover the 1359 Blackpool North – Sheffield, which ran via Copy Pit, and was usually a Tinsley 37:
87014 1031 Carlisle – Preston
47529 1142 Preston – Blackpool North
37246 1359 Blackpool North – Sheffield
The 37 was required, and ran via Copy Pit, Greetland, Healey Mills, Crofton West Jn, and Moorthorpe.
At Sheffield I expected to go straight home to York, and finish, but required 47100 arrived on the 1053 Weymouth – Bradford, so it would be rude to turn it down …
47100 1731 Sheffield – Leeds via Moorthorpe
At Leeds I connected straight into the 1512 Llandudno – Scarborough, with a very dud 47:
47434 1903 Leeds – York
So there we are, rover completed. Shame to end it with a dud 47. 47434 hooked off to go for fuel – as diagrammed – and I just hung around to see which 45/1 or 47/4 would take over…
37106 1950 York – Scarborough
37106 2115 Scarborough – York
Well, that’s a rather better way to end a rover, with a required 37. A rather good day for 37 mileage, track, and requirements.

Monday 03/09/84
47614 2345 Glasgow Queen Street – Perth
47513 banker to Cowlairs
After finishing late shift, I was en route to Perth to cover a required 37 to Aberdeen …

Sunday 03/09/89
At this stage I have a house (and family) in Crewe, and a job in London (Paddington), where I had temporary digs. After a weekend at home, it was time to head south (via North and East, of course) …
47432 1327 Crewe – Manchester Piccadilly via Styal
47434 1445 Manchester Piccadilly – Leeds via Guide Bridge, Stalybridge
43084 + 91006 1600 Leeds – Doncaster
Now you might have thought that doing the 43 + 91 combination through to Kings Cross was the purpose of this exercise, but if so, why did I alight at Doncaster? Because there’s something even better / rarer on the train behind:
89001 1640 Doncaster – Kings Cross
This was the 1530 Hull – Kings Cross, and was formed of normal Mk 2 loco-hauled stock.

Thursday 03/09/92
Attending an exhibition at the NEC:
47832 0749 Reading – Coventry
86401 0918 Coventry – Birmingham International
47813 1816 Birmingham International – Reading

Sunday 03/09/95
Returning home after the family holiday in Morar:
37409 1900 Fort William – Edinburgh via Cowlairs N-E curve, Falkirk High

WEDNESDAY 3rd SEPTEMBER 1975:

After all the excitement of the Yorkshire Ranger week, Derby Works open day and the Stockton and Darlington 150 celebrations at Shildon, it was time to head back home to Hampshire and start preparing to find a job on the railway:

E56056/50252 Thornaby-Darlington
47 457 Darlington-Kings Cross
7345/7053/7353 Waterloo-Petersfield

While waiting at Darlington I saw Wantage Tramway steam loco no, 5 "Shannon" on a LOWMAC wagon parked in a siding - presumably awaiting a lift back to Didcot - and ex-works South Wales 37 284 passing on the Up Fast line with 1D21, the return leg of the Doncaster Works-Newcastle test train.

If I may be permitted yet again a slight back-pedal with this, which I have just discovered in another old notebook:

SATURDAY 1st SEPTEMBER 1973:

My last train journey in Scotland before moving South to Hampshire five days later, was a MYSTEX - or was until the crew change stop at Carlisle on the outward journey, when the lady announcer announced: "Will passengers on platform four please stand clear of the train now arriving. This train is the mystery excursion from Glasgow to Southport and is not for public use"! A good day's spotting in Liverpool (my first visit) was enjoyed, making use of the 1938-vintage LMS electric units.

EMU Helensburgh Central-Glasgow QS LL via Singer
1861 (Later to become 47 211) Glasgow Central-Southport via Beattock (run-round at Wigan)
M28349M/29558/29863 Southport-Liverpool Exchange
M29877M/29570/28343 Liverpool Exchange-Southport
1861 Southport-Glasgow Central via Beattock (run-round at Wigan)
EMU Glasgow Queen St LL-Helensburgh Central via Singer

Amongst the many locos and units 'copped' was green-liveried Yorkshire Engine Company 0-4-0 diesel shunter no. D2853, stabled at Liverpool Exchange for the weekend in between its weekday shunting duties in the docks. Lime Street produced a good haul of cops too.
