3rd September 1982

After having 40162 on the 1st & 2nd, would it be 3 days in a row...?

31255 Sunderland - Newcastle 1N04 (Well at least it was a different Goyle from the previous 3 days)
45143 Newcastle - York 1O19
47321 York - Darlo 1E79
47544 Darlo - York 1M75
45125 York - Newcastle 1E55
47321 Newcastle - Durham 1M79
47426 Durham - Newcastle 1E74
47206 Morpeth - Newcastle 1E21

So, no. No sign of 40162, or any other 40s for that matter.

3rd September 1983

According to the timetable, it is still a Summer Saturday. Well I'm not complaining about that, despite the autumnal chill...

37075 Newcastle - Durham 1P14
47418 Durham - Newcastle 1S12 (Would have been a Deltic 2 years earlier!)
46037 Sunderland - Newcastle 1N35
37106 Durham - Newcastle 1N13
37106 Newcastle - Durham 1V97
47403 Durham - Newcastle 1E71 (Worst loco on this service all summer - sorry @47403 !)

3rd September 1986

A slightly different day today. As @CW2 noted a few days back, there was a unit shortage at Haymarket and there lots of loco hauled turns working between Edinburgh and Fife. At this time there were lots of 26s out and about - too many to resist...

47637 Larbert - Pitlochry 1H01 (Yes, that desperate middle of the night leap)
47595 Pitlochry - Perth 1T04
47461 + 47595 Perth - Stirling 1T04
47461 Stirling - Waverley 1P02
27024 Waverley - Aberdour 2J23
47701 Aberdour - Inverkeithing 2K07

And so the fun begins...

26021 Inverkeithing - Haymarket 2G24
26046 Haymarket - South Gyle
26010 South Gyle - Haymarket
26029 Haymarket - Inverkeithing
26014 Inverkeithing - Waverley

Still time for a trip up the West Highland before heading back to cover the chuck-out from Dundee:

47714 Waverley - Queen St 1O19
37422 Queen St - Crianlarich 1Y13
37424 Crianlarich - Queen St 1T28
27001 Queen St - Larbert 1L39 (I'll be seeing you again next week!)
27052 Haymarket - Waverley 2J24
47209 Waverley - Dundee 2J33
37215 Dundee - Perth 2Y34 - very nice!
47545 Perth - Mossend 1D32

An alternative approach to getting no sleep on overnight trains.

3rd September 1989

87009 Carlisle - New St

Saturday 4th September 1982

... And here ends my summer 1982 moves book. I do have a few moves from later in the year built up from my class listings, but no 40s or 87s as they were in different books. It is possible I may be getting another of my old books or two tomorrow but I don't know what... Fingers crossed.

Anyway, this day just about sums up summer 1982 perfectly. 100% 40s on the North Wales Coast starting and ending with The Bangor... 386.5 miles.

40025 WBQ to Prestatyn, 1D34 07.45 Man Vic to Bangor
40035 Prestatyn to WBQ, 1E86 09.00 Llandudno to York
40106 WBQ to Rhyl, 1D29 10.45 Man Vic to Holyhead
40025 Rhyl to Man Vic, 1J30 11.57 Bangor to Man Vic
40025 Man Vic to Rhyl, 1D21 15.45 Man Vic to Bangor
40191 Rhyl to Chester, Return Mystex Rhyl to Glasgow
40049 Chester to Rhyl, 1D65 17.45 Man Vic to Llandudno Junc
40025 Rhyl to WBQ, 1J31 19.25 Bangor to Man Vic.

Ah, what a day.

The expected required 37056 produced on the 0105 Perth – Aberdeen. I recall that this train started off in the south bay, for ease of transfer of newspapers from the Glasgow and Edinburgh to Inverness services, so on departure it propelled out to Perth South Junction, then crossed over to take the Dundee line.
37056 0105 Perth – Aberdeen
27038 0447 Aberdeen – Elgin
47040 0657 Elgin – Aberdeen
47614 0905 Aberdeen – Dundee
47307 1028 Dundee – Ladybank
27064 1113 Ladybank – Leuchars
27018 1141 Leuchars – Edinburgh
47705 1330 Edinburgh – Glasgow Queen Street
… and straight back to work!

Monday 04/09/89
I got wind of a (very) required 37 working out of Liverpool Street:
37218 1620 Liverpool Street – Harwich Parkeston Quay
37218 1845 Harwich Parkeston Quay – Liverpool Street
On our return arrival at Liverpool Street, the train was filmed by a news crew from ITN, and there was a massive police presence. Had the news of this massive 37 working spread? No - there was an international football match scheduled in Gothenburg, and the Tor Britannia had been full of England fans when it sailed from Harwich that morning, one of whom had fallen overboard and drowned. The ferry had turned round and brought them all back to Harwich, but – luckily for us – they were all being held there and interviewed before being released by the police, so none of them made it out in time to have 37218!

Friday 04/09/92
43185 + 43008 1954 Reading – Paddington
90006 2130 Euston – Edinburgh

Sunday 04/09/94
47762 0924 Reading – Didcot
6024 1025 Didcot – Bristol Temple Meads via Swindon, Gloucester. 80’ late.
6024 1640 Bristol Temple Meads – Didcot via Gloucester, Swindon.
47812 2140 Didcot – Reading

Monday 04/09/95
86256 0040 Edinburgh – Euston
43131 + 43140 0830 Paddington – Reading
The last legs of the homeward trip after the family holiday in Morar.

Wednesday 04/09/96
I’d done my usual HST trip to / from Paddington for work, coming home on the 1703 Paddington – Cheltenham. At Reading I noted the 1420 Brighton – Manchester had not yet departed, so I hung around to see what was on it:
33202 + 33025 1628 Reading – Birmingham New Street via Coventry. 80’ ->90’ late.
I scored 33202.
47839 2042 Birmingham New Street – Reading via Coventry.

Friday 04/09/98
Attending some (work-related?) event in Manchester:
47817 0632 Reading – Stoke on Trent via Coventry, Birmingham New Street, Stafford
87023 0945 Stoke on Trent – Manchester Piccadilly
47712 1417 Manchester Piccadilly – Coventry via Crewe, Birmingham New Street
Somewhere between International and Coventry the 1418 ex Paddington stormed past with 37605 on the front! That changed my plans. I doubled back from Coventry, hoping that 37605 would work back to Paddington in diagram on the 2006 ex New Street.
86259 1626 Coventry – Birmingham New Street
I waited patiently for the 2006 to Paddington to produce:
47348 2006 Paddington – Reading via Coventry – not quite what I had in mind.
As for 37605, it did indeed work the 2006 New Street – Paddington – but 24 hours later!
I never did catch up with 37605 (although I had several runs off it at 37036 prior to refurbishment, most notably on load 12 into and out of Stranraer).

No offence taken Mr xot. Especially in the summer timetable, it was time to make hay, while the sun shined(no pun intended). An ETH 47 on a turn that normally threw out NB locos was always a disappointment. Fortunately for all of us ETH wagons or 47s were fewer in their numbers on these turns. I remember my mates and I going for the Eastbourne, (with no gen) turn, expecting a 450xx or 473xx and TE 37 turning up. I'm thinking 37074 or 37199, my mind escapes me though.

Some of these summer Saturday services provided an ideal way for far flung depots to get north east allocated locos back to their home patch after they'd been for a wander round the country. Great when it was a Gateshead or Thornaby 37, not so great when it was a Gateshead 47/4!

47707 Cowlairs - Queen Street 1S07

47209 Ladybank - Dundee 2J33
26014 Dundee - Perth 2Y34

Faffing about on the East Midlands Ranger...

86224 New St - Milton Keynes
90003 Peterborough - Doncaster
91027 Doncaster - Peterborough

This must have been the day I yellow-penned the Bletchley - Bedford line. And yes, that says 90003, not 91003.

That's quite a rarity. All the 90s I had in or out of Kings Cross were of the RfD / EWS or Freightliner variety, on hire to the East Coast TOC of the day.

From the Class 90 ned site:

"it was not uncommon in the early days to see Inter-City class 90s on East Coast passenger duties - examples that have trasversed the ECML route between London and Scotland include 90002, 90003, 90009 and 90011"

A journey from Kings Cross to Teesside in 1963. My first experience of Brush Type 4 haulage.

Thursday 5th September 1963

D1524 15:00 Kings Cross-Darlington

Kings Cross was awash with diesels, as steam was now prohibited on the ECML south of Peterborough. Deltics D9012/D9017, Peak D191, EE D253/D272 and Brush D1505/D1517 were seen in the Station along with half a dozen Type 2s on empty stock workings. Practically new D1524, outshopped from Brush 10 weeks earlier, backed onto our train.

D1524 (later to become 47004) left on time and I had a fast run to Peterborough. First steam loco seen that day was Ivatt 2-6-0 43082 near the station. After leaving Peterborough and passing New England shed, I noted withdrawn A3 60044 Melton and V2s 60803/60817 dumped out of use, no doubt awaiting their final journey to Doncaster for scrapping.

Passing Grantham A3 60048 Doncaster was observed in the shed yard. It would be withdrawn four days later when Grantham shed closed. Heading further north steam was becoming more abundant with many B1, O2, WD and 9F seen.

Slowing for Doncaster I noticed A1 60157 Great Eastern, and K1 62011 (ex works) at the shed. The K1 was allocated to Alnmouth and would survive there for another three years. At the station A1 60149 Amadis, and a very new D1533 were spotted. Brush was now producing these Type 4s at the rate of about one a week, and Crewe would soon be doing likewise. The writing was clearly on the wall for LNER Pacific steam power.

Arrival at York was on time, and V2 60963 (with double chimney) and Deltic D9011 were noted there. Heading north past York depot I observed Jubilee 45661 Vernon and A4 60029 Woodcock on shed. This was the last time I saw Woodcock as it was condemned two months later. It was the first A4 I ever saw, copped at Darlington station soon after I started trainspotting in 1959, aged 10.

Heading through the Vale of York on the down fast, I noted A1 60154 Bon Accord on a northbound freight on the down slow just south of Northallerton. Arrival at Darlington was on time a few minutes after 19:00 hrs. A four hour run from Kings Cross with three stops was quite a decent time back then.

DMU 19:15 Darlington-Thornaby

My last notebook entries that day were a Peak D187, and A1 60124 Kenilworth on a freight, both at Darlington.

In contrast 30 Years later: - Sunday 5th September 1993

91007 16.04 Darlington-York
43078+43??? 17.01 York-Derby
156406 19.36 Derby-Nottingham

@Harvester That journey from 1963 is fascinating. Thanks for posting.

Meanwhile ...

Saturday 05/09/81
A visit to York with my girlfriend for a couple of days, with the trains carefully chosen (of course) to avoid HSTs:
47491 0940 Kings Cross – York
Well, that’s not quite what I had in mind – but I did clock this at 103 mph.

Monday 05/09/83
Now living and working in York, there is a nice after-work refreshment trip to Stalybridge station buffet available if the right traction produces on the 1710 to Manchester Victoria:
40150 1710 York – Stalybridge
45132 1904 Stalybridge – York

Wednesday 05/09/84
The APT was on a regular (additional) Glasgow – Euston – Glasgow run, accumulating mileage in passenger service. I decided to sample it for the first time.
49003 + 49001 0802 Glasgow Central – Preston
86215 1037 Preston – Glasgow Central
Next I found that required 47365 was doing the 1715 Glasgow Queen Street – Edinburgh, an additional peak hour loco-hauled turn, over and above the normal push-pull workings:
47365 1715 Glasgow Queen Street – Haymarket
47591 banker to Cowlairs
27064 1821 Haymarket – Kirkcaldy
27018 1916 Kirkcaldy – Edinburgh
477xx 2030 Edinburgh – Glasgow Queen Street

Friday 05/09/86
After visiting my parents in Plymouth with new-born son, I had to drop wife and son off at Abergavenny to visit her parents, whilst I then carried on alone towards Scotland (ish):
43166 + 43014 0833 Plymouth – Bristol Parkway
43033 + 43002 1116 Bristol Parkway – Newport
33015 1215 Newport – Crewe
86249 1504 Crewe – Liverpool
31417 1545 Liverpool – Doncaster via Warrington Central, Manchester Piccadilly, Stockport, Hazel Grove, Sheffield, Rotherham Masborough.
Although I don’t have a lot of time for class 31s, on load 5 over interesting routes they are OK.
From Doncaster it all got a bit boring again. I had a hotel booked in Berwick upon Tweed …
43086 + 43048 1839 Doncaster – Berwick upon Tweed
(This was the 1700 Kings Cross – Glasgow Queen Street).

Saturday 05/09/87 – a day out with wife and son.
47512 0953 Crewe – Shrewsbury
37251 + 37431 1050 Shrewsbury – Machynlleth
DMU Machynlleth – Aberystwyth
40122 1500 Aberystwyth – Shrewsbury
This was the through Aberystwyth – Euston. It arrived late on its inward journey because 40122 had a control air leak, and wasn’t generating full power. We left 25 minutes late on load 11, and were 50 minutes late into Shrewsbury. Not a good advert for class 40s.
DMU Shrewsbury – Crewe

Tuesday 05/09/89
At this time I was in digs in Paddington with my wife and 2 kids in Crewe. I worked the early shift, then went home to visit them:
87031 1530 Euston – Crewe …
(Wednesday 06/09/89)
… and got up super early the next morning to ensure I was at work in time for the early shift at Paddington:
90027 0411 Crewe – Euston

Wednesday 05/09/90
After working a night shift, I come out for a little play with some 91s:
91013 0820 Kings Cross – Doncaster
91018 1041 Doncaster – Peterborough
91015 1201 Peterborough – Wakefield Westgate
91012 1322 Wakefield Westgate – Kings Cross
All four 91s were new for haulage.
47579 1620 Paddington – Reading
… home for some tea, then back out for another night shift.

Thursday 05/09/91
47441 1720 Paddington – Reading
I don’t normally list my commuting moves, but in this instance, we ran middle road through Reading, came to a halt at Reading West Junction, then propelled back into platform 4. I assume there must have been a points failure.

Saturday 05/09/92
37059 + 37063 0352 Edinburgh – Inverness via Stirling, Perth
158 723 Inverness – Elgin
47675 1045 Elgin – Inverness
37025 + 37240 1227 Inverness – Strathcarron
40’ late start, attaching 37025 after the booked departure time. I think it was needed at Kyle for freight / ballast work.
37087 1541 Strathcarron – Inverness
158 715 Inverness – Aberdeen
Both the 37s on the sleeper and 37240 were required. A fine haul for the day, and some excellent scenery.

Friday 05/09/97
I was at work in Paddington when news began to filter through that the Cross Country services were going through one of their spasmodic meltdowns, with some unusual locos about. I booked a half day’s leave on the spot …
37408 1418 Paddington – Birmingham New Street via Coventry
47829 1706 Birmingham New Street – Leamington Spa via Coventry
31110 + 31203 1801 Leamington Spa – Birmingham New Street via Coventry
47827 1912 Birmingham New Street – Reading via Coventry
That was the only time I ever had a 37/4 out of Paddington, and both the 31s were required, so not a bad afternoon’s work.

Fantastic memories @Harvester. Takes me back to childhood journeys to and from my grandparents' on Teesside. Although I was given my first Ian Allan Combined Volume for my fourth birthday in October 1961, I only used it for reference and learning the different classes of locomotives, not actually starting to record numbers seen until about 1966. I do, however, remember my first Deltic haulage - D9020 "Nimbus" from Newcastle to Darlington in about 1963.

THURSDAY 5th SEPTEMBER 1974:

A journey from Kings Cross to Teesside in 1963.
It must have been great to experience that transition era. Both savouring steam before it vanished and getting to grips with these new-fangled diesels.
I had a hotel booked in Berwick upon Tweed …
I think I know why!

5th September 1986

A day when we ended up traveling on the Highland Mainline more often than we were anticipating:

47642 Stirling - Perth 1L31
47461 Perth - Inverness 1H01

Time to sample the Inverness-allocated 37/4s...

37418 Inverness - Dingwall 2H61
37419 Dingwall - Achnasheen 2H81
37416 Achnasheen - Dingwall 2H80
37417 Dingwall - Inverness 2H60

It was only mid-morning and we weren't sure what to do next. But then it became obvious:

37014 Inverness - Queen St 1T20

Readers may recall that 014 failed on me half way up the tunnel out of Queen St on Day 1 of my first Freedom of Scotland. It was good to get a proper run behind it. After arrival into Glasgow it was time for some faffing about, until once again the next move became obvious:

37412 Dumbarton C - Queen St 1T28
27054 Queen St - Stirling 1L37
37050 Queen St - Inverness 1H15

That all worked out very nicely.

As we wanted to be in Edinburgh the next morning, we now had the chance of an uninterrupted overnight. No leaping at Pitlochry or Lockerbie required!

47617 Inverness - Perth 1T04

5th September 1987

47422 Newcastle - Sunderland 2B07
47418 Sunderland - Newcastle 2M41

5th September 1992

I think I had run out of ideas on what to do on the East Mids Ranger:

86224 New St - Cov
91001 Peterborough - Doncaster
91009 Doncaster - Peterborough
91002 Peterborough - Doncaster
91029 Doncaster - Peterborough
86240 Cov - New St

Definitely all 91s this time! Having to travel via to/from Peterborough via Coventry was a bit of a faff, but that was where my travel card and Ranger joined up their validity.

31450 1J27 Edinburgh-Manchester Victoria.

A profitable day out on a Peak Wayfarer ticket with a couple of add on pieces.
45049 was a very welcome winner on a Liverpool-Newcastle, I only just made it at Manchester Victoria, 47375 kept up the scoring on the Yarmouth-Liverpool NB turn and 47337 Herbert Austin closed the scoring on the Poole-Manchester Picc(another booked NB turn).

When the FW sleeper transferred from Kings X to Euston in 1976 the seated portion increased from one coach (BCK - with SK/TSO added summer Fridays northbound and Sats southbound only) to two coaches every night, initially booked BCK SK (12 1st and 66 2nd seats), with the SK replaced by a TSO in the early years adding 16 2nd seats, and this was reasonably well adhered to for some years. I recall the period which followed when the two seated coaches could be absolutley anything including the BSK FK pairing quoted - 42 1st 24 2nd instead of 12 1st 82 2nd as booked, at least southbound some of the 1st copartments were generally declassified and other than at a busy weekend this was more than adequate.

This was my comeback to the railways week and I was on a North West Rover. It was as much about day trips as it was about recording "haulage", but I was determined to do the Cumbrian Coast. I'd tried this move the previous day, but a signal failure at Wigan had put paid to that.

390135 WBQ to Carlisle
37425 Carlisle to St Bees
Couple of hours at St Bees, looked around the church and spent some time on the beach
156454 St Bees to Ravenglass
Half of Loweswater Gold in the Ratty Arms.
68005 (pulling) & 68033* (pushing) Ravenglass to Carlisle
350410 Carlisle to Man Picc
185127 Man Picc to Oxford Road
158783 Oxford Road to Warrington C

This was the last time I had a Syphon and the first time I had 68s.

* - probably not powering. Thanks to @xotGD for the correction.

Are you sure 68033 was pushing? I thought only the front loco provided power on those services?

A good way to get back on the rails, mind.

No idea if it was pushing, I'd just assumed so. I've removed it from my logs.

I had worked the early shift at Manchester Victoria, so was able to come out for the afternoon Bangor:
40106 1540 Manchester Victoria – Colwyn Bay
40031 1739 Colwyn Bay – Manchester Victoria

Saturday 06/09/80
Another day on the trolley:
86252 1025 Euston – Crewe
40082 1418 Crewe – Llandudno Junction
40180 1614 Llandudno Junction – Crewe
DMU Crewe – Chester
47491 1933 Chester – Crewe
86327 2016 Crewe – Euston
I required 40180, which re-engined the 1025 Euston – Llandudno at Crewe, but I let it go, confident of picking it up on its return working, which I did. I sold all I was going to sell on the 1605 Llandudno – Euston (my booked working) by Crewe, so I doubled back with a DMU to Chester to pick up the 1805 Holyhead – Euston. I’d had 86327 as 86027 just a few weeks previously.

Thursday 06/09/84
I was lodging in Glasgow, whilst my wife was still in York, so it was time to go home for the weekend. Of course, I chose the route which gave me a new 27 for haulage:
27020 1345 Glasgow Central – Carlisle via Dumfries
87023 1631 Carlisle – Preston
DMU Preston – Manchester Victoria
47421 1852 Manchester Victoria – York
It all turned a bit mouldy after Preston. Oh well …

Saturday 06/09/86
Emerging from my hotel in Berwick upon Tweed, I was hopeful of scoring a new loco on the 0744 Berwick – Haymarket, which was nominally a DMU turn but which had been loco hauled for the past few weeks due to the collapse of the Haymarket DMU fleet. As the DMU collapse coincided with a slump in coal traffic, various locos which were usually based at Millerhill for working coal trains around Fife were sitting idle, so my hopes were high:
26001 0744 Berwick upon Tweed – Haymarket
They don’t come any bigger!
47705 0915 Haymarket – Edinburgh
The Fife DMU services were also in uproar, with loco hauled sets substituting on the Edinburgh – Kirkcaldy all-stations services, with a turnover loco at Kirkcaldy:
26010 0935 Edinburgh – Kirkcaldy
26046 1031 Kirkcaldy – Haymarket
26038 1126 Haymarket – Falkirk Grahamston
DMU Falkirk Grahamston – Polmont
47712 1220 Polmont – Glasgow Queen Street
… and in to work, then back out again for …
47530 2157 Glasgow Central – Kilwinning
37068 2332 Kilwinning – Paisley Gilmour Street
37068 was required. I was just fortunate that my night shift colleague arrived sufficiently early for me to get out of the office and across to Glasgow Central to make the 2157 departure.

Sunday 06/09/92
44871 1110 Aberdeen – Inverness
44871 1605 Inverness – Aberdeen
37156 + 37251 2100 Aberdeen – Edinburgh
(Monday 07/09/92)
90011 0022 Edinburgh – Euston via Carstairs avoider, WCML
The main purpose of my trip to Scotland this weekend was to do a steam special from Aberdeen to Inverness and return – a route which is often overlooked when people consider their favourite Scottish lines. I really enjoy the character of this line, with both single and double track sections, decent gradients, and some relatively high speed running. It is an ideal route for a steam railtour.

47593 + 47617 Perth - Stirling 1T04
47593 Stirling - Waverley 1P02

I shared the following on this thread a couple of years ago, so apologies to those who have read it before:

For once we had some gen - we had heard that 26001 was working the early morning Berwick - Haymarket so decided to take unit down to Dunbar to intercept it. (We'd even heard that some bashers had spent the night in Berwick to get it across the border - now I know who one of them was!) After a quick trip to the shop to get some grub for the day, we were heading back to the station and saw 37, 47, coaching stock pulling in heading north. Turned out to be 1S77 sleepers only, so not looking good. Four frustrated cranks standing on the platform. The guard saw us: "Where are you going lads?" "Edinburgh!" "You can travel in the van." So we jumped aboard the BG to get 37041 on top of a fagged 47632 up to Waverley. Sleepers only, and it wasn't even booked to call at Dunbar.

37041 (+47632) Dunbar - Waverley 1S77

Then it was time to play on the Type 2s on DMU turns:

26046 Waverley - Haymarket

And back on a unit for our original target of the morning:

26001 Waverley - Haymarket (I don't know if @CW2 remembers four disheveled Geordies baling on at Waverley)

Here it is after arrival at Haymarket (again apologies to those who've seen this phot before):

26001.jpg

Now I see from upthread that a certain person then took a 47/7 back to Waverley, and further upthread that he never had 26011. So what was our next move?

26011 Haymarket - Waverley

Then we were back on the same train for a while:

26010 Waverley - North Queensferry
27027 North Queensferry - Waverley
47714 Waverley - Haymarket 1V73
27049 Haymarket - Waverley 2J08
26038 Waverley - Perth 1L35
37050 Perth - Queen St 1T20

We also had some gen that a service out of Central might produce a 37, so we took a wander across town...

37087 Glasgow C - Barrhead 1M89

Turns out the gen was correct!

47322 Barrhead - Glasgow C 1S37
37050 Queen St - Perth 1H15
47569 Perth - Haymarket 1B36
47710 Haymarket - Queen St 1O61

Alas we did not know about 37068 being out, so it was just another Duff and a chance to sleep:

47617 Queen St - Perth 1L73

Heading north, but how far north...?

@xotGD - thanks for the phot - and for reminding me how I missed 26011 yet again!

Anyway, back to the tales of long, long ago ...

Friday 07/09/79
The final day of my summer job at Manchester Victoria station buffet. I had vacated my digs, so with my bicycle and baggage, I turned up to work my last shift, and then celebrated with a run on the Bangor:
40108 1540 Manchester Victoria – Rhyl
40106 1758 Rhyl – Chester
This terminated at Chester due to the Warrington PSB staff being in dispute. I declined the offer of a bus forward to Manchester, and instead took:
DMU 1930 Chester – Manchester Oxford Road
My next task was to get myself (and baggage and bicycle) down to Plymouth to visit my parents. With a Roarer on the 2137 to Newquay, and some end-of-season empty compartments, that was the obvious choice:
81013 2137 Manchester Piccadilly – Birmingham New Street via Crewe
Alas at Birmingham an ETH 47 was waiting to take over, but I wasn’t really in a position to start leaping from train to train, so I sat tight and got my head down for a good doss down to the West Country …
47520 2334 Birmingham New Street – Quedgeley Junction …
(Saturday 08/09/79)
I was in the rearmost compartment of the train, and got a very good doss. When I awoke, we were stationary, and the air was full of the stench of burning electrical machinery.
I heard footsteps on ballast. The guard was in the process of walking back to put down dets, as 47520 had suffered a serious main generator fire, and was a complete failure. After a long delay, a couple of locos arrived from Gloucester depot, a 31 to haul the incinerated 47520 back to the depot, and the very unlovely 47482 to work forward. I had hoped for something a bit more entertaining, but it wasn’t to be:
47482 03xx Quedgeley Junction – Plymouth - 120’ late.

Sunday 07/09/80
My Sunday diagram on the 0855 to Holyhead had finished for the season, so once I returned to Euston after my usual North Wales Saturday turn, I had a free Sunday. I decided to head to Manchester on The Splitter to see what the dragging would produce:
86204 0050 Euston – Stafford
47551 0350 Stafford – Manchester Piccadilly via Stoke
The answer to my question as to what the dragging would produce seemed at first to consist entirely of class 47s, so I took the first required one for minimum mileage:
47330 0840 Manchester Piccadilly – Stockport
As I stood at Stockport, they started apologising for the delay to the 0911 Manchester – Plymouth, which I already knew was required 47342. The 47 had made it all the way from Piccadilly to Longsight before failing, and they had to rustle up a replacement loco at short notice. I wonder what that would be …
40180 0921 Stockport – Birmingham New Street via Stoke, 40’ -> 10’ late.
At New Street another required 47 was waiting to take over, so I stuck with it:
47171 1150 Birmingham New Street – Bristol Temple Meads
50020 1426 Bristol Temple Meads – Plymouth, 40’ late.

Wednesday 07/09/83
Working in the offices in York, I was in a good position to know if there were any 40s working nearby:
45132 1710 York – Leeds
DMU Leeds – Skipton
40013 1830 Skipton – Leeds
43152 + 43134 1910 Leeds – York

Friday 07/09/84
After a night at home in York, I had to head back to work in Glasgow. Naturally I took the scenic route:
31435 0804 York – Leeds
31448 + 31433 0900 Leeds – Carlisle
86207 1205 Carlisle – Carstairs
47053 1302 Carstairs – Haymarket
47701 1403 Haymarket – Glasgow Queen Street
… and back to work
The pair of 31s over the S&C worked through from Hull, hauling load 9. Both 31435 and 31448 were required. The 86/2 and 47 were on the 0930 Liverpool – Edinburgh, which often got some monstrous freight loco forward from Carstairs. Alas, not today.

Sunday 07/09/86
I turned up at Glasgow Central to cover the 1445 to Carlisle via Dumfries, which was planned to run top-and-tail to Shields Jn then round the curve to Muirhouse Jn due to an engineering block. The loco on the rear of the train at Glasgow Central (which would be the train loco from Muirhouse Jn) was 37088, but it had flat batteries, so they uncoupled it and left it on the stops. I took the train anyway, in the hope they might turn something big off Polmadie to work it forward:
47357 1445 Glasgow Central – Shields Jn
Eventually the replacement loco arrived:
27056 (oh well, nice idea) 1455 Shields Jn – Carlisle via Muirhouse Jn, Dumfries
86223 1723 Carlisle – Glasgow Central
The return run with the (required) 86 was also diverted, running via Holytown, Motherwell, and the Hamilton Circle. As the train was wedged, I stood in a vestibule, and the window next to me was shattered by stone throwing at Holytown, covering me in shards of glass. Then another stone was a near-miss at Blantyre, bouncing off the carriage door. Quite an eventful day out.

Wednesday 07/09/88
A little after-work move:
37431 1644 Crewe – Manchester Piccadilly
37431 1817 Manchester Piccadilly – Crewe

Friday 07/09/90
After working a night shift, I decided to have a day on the trains instead of going home to bed. (My sons were aged 2 and 4 at this time, so I’d probably get just as much sleep going on a bash as I would at home):
43076 + 43059 0700 St Pancras – Derby
20196 + 20105 0926 Derby – Sleaford
150 103 Sleaford – Grantham
91015 1223 Grantham – Wakefield Westgate
91004 1322 Wakefield Westgate – Kings Cross
47716 1620 Paddington – Reading
Tea, and a quick wash and change, then back for another night shift:
47596 2028 Reading – Paddington
I scored both 20s and 91004.

7th September 1985

A day that turned into a Three Peaks Challenge:

47140 Newcastle - Durham 1M76
45142 Durham - Newcastle 1E08
45142 Newcastle - Durham 1M32
45108 Durham - Newcastle 1E99
45140 Newcastle - Durham 1M19

Not quite up there with the pair of 20s the previous Saturday.

7th September 1986

The Sunday of our Freedom. We went north, north, and north again...

47586 Perth - Inverness 1H45
37420 Inverness - Dingwall 2H87
37419 Dingwall - Georgemas Jn 2H62
37261 Georgemas Jn - Thurso 2H73
37261 Thurso - Georgemas Jn 2H72
37419 Georgemas Jn - Inverness 2H64
47595 Inverness - Mossend Yard 1D34

The final overnight of the trip. I'm sure we were totally knackered by this stage.
