There was a York to Colwyn Bay ADEX, so I booked a ticket and hoped for a 40 …
40173 0745 York – Colwyn Bay via Leeds, Normanton, Wakefield Kirkgate, Mirfield, Hebden Bridge, Manchester Victoria, Warrington Bank Quay
I carried on with a DMU to make my first ever visit to Holyhead. (It was by no means the last time I'd go there).
DMU Colwyn Bay – Holyhead
40117 1603 Holyhead – Rhyl
40173 1745 Rhyl – York via Warrington Bank Quay, Manchester Victoria, Huddersfield, Normanton, Leeds.

Thursday 10/04/80
86017 00xx Mossend – Crewe
After a lengthy fester in the all-night buffet at Crewe, salvation:
81018 0737 Crewe – Preston
87012 0846 Preston – Carstairs
47517 1124 Carstairs – Edinburgh
26033 1247 Edinburgh – Perth via Ladybank
40160 1441 Perth – Dundee
27017 1557 Dundee – Perth
47435 1642 Perth – Dundee
40160 1915 Dundee – Glasgow Queen Street
47706 2105 Glasgow Queen Street – Edinburgh via Falkirk Grahamston
55016 2250 Edinburgh – Newcastle

Friday 10/04/81
50029 1803 Paddington – Oxford
From Oxford I had intended returning with the 1623 ex Manchester Piccadilly, which was allocated 50017. However that was running 45' late. (I subsequently learned that the class 85 working the train had failed entirely north of Birmingham, and the train arrived at New Street behind a class 56 hauling the failed electric). They announced a relief train was running in its path from Birmingham. I wondered what would turn up. Well, it was a Cravens DMU with a Met Camm trailer. It had to be done!
50786 + 59535 + 51492 19xx Oxford – Reading.
At Didcot I expected we would be routed onto the Up Slow, but instead we were sent across the ladder onto the Up Fast, with the Cravens power cars thrashing their way along the GWML at 70+ mph, all windows vibrating and rattling madly. Terminated at Reading.
50017 2018 Reading - Paddington

Sunday 10/04/83
After a lengthy fester at Crewe, the Up Stranraer arrived with a Roarer on, a mere load 17. I leapt in near the rear, only to find the 85 drop its pantograph and an unknown 47 attached to the front:
47xxx 0529 Crewe – Stafford (dragging 85016)
85016 06xx Stafford – Euston via Bushbury, Bescot, Aston, Stechford
When we approached Euston, there was a final surprise in store. We were on the Up Slow, then at Primrose Hill we took the Up Empty Carriage Line (the Rat Hole) to take our gargantuan train into platform 18 on the far side of the station. I think this was the only time I ever travelled via the Rat Hole.
The previous day I had done 40057 from Newcastle to Kings Cross on a relief. Time for the balancing move:
40057 1110 Kings Cross – Newcastle via Selby, Eaglescliffe.
This was a through train to Edinburgh, but the 40 was removed at Newcastle.
45121 1815 Newcastle – York

Wednesday 10/04/85
The pair of 25s on the Ince & Elton – Mossend stone train were lined up for another trip from Carstairs to Edinburgh with a relief from Bristol.
86417 1520 Glasgow Central – Lockerbie
85026 1737 Lockerbie – Carstairs
25196 + 25175 1824 Carstairs – Edinburgh
47707 1930 Edinburgh – Glasgow Queen Street via Falkirk High

Thursday 10/04/86
I was working late shift, and had the following day as Rest Day. Various 37s had been active on the Inverness – Aberdeen line for the past few days, so I decided to have a dabble. As a bonus, the overnight out of Queen Street was a 37 to Perth in place of the usual 47:
37421 2330 Glasgow Queen Street – Perth
37402 Banker to Cowlairs

Tuesday 10/04/90
Class 91s had taken over almost all Kings Cross – Leeds services, so I thought it was about time I gave them a whirl. Note that the electrified route into Leeds was via Copley Hill (which was previously quite rare) as it was found that the Viaduct route into Leeds (the pre-existing main line) would be too difficult / costly to electrify.
50031 0630 Reading – Paddington
91009 0750 Kings Cross – Leeds
91011 1010 Leeds – Doncaster
91002 1059 Doncaster – Leeds
91002 1210 Leeds – Doncaster
91010 1259 Doncaster – Leeds
91010 1410 Leeds – Kings Cross
47547 1707 Paddington – Reading
All four 91s were new for haulage.

Saturday 10/04/93
During our family Easter break, I was granted a few hours remission and a Domestic Exit Visa for good behaviour, so I set off to the West Somerset Railway for the afternoon:
4561 1519 Dunster – Minehead
D9526 + 4561 1545 Minehead – Bishops Lydeard, 28' late.
D9526 + 4561 1740 Bishops Lydeard – Dunster, 12' late.

An oddity today with, I presume, a failed (or dragged?) Can leading to the duff haulage. All in a random order, I'm afraid.

A trip to Edinburgh from Newcastle on Maundy Thursday 1963, with
three young teenage friends.

There was plenty of activity at Newcastle station while we waited for our train. A1 60129 arrived light engine, Deltic D9014 was on a Kings Cross working and V3 tanks were on ecs and pilot duties, Our train arrived a few minutes late from York behind D246.

D246 09:18 Newcastle-Edinburgh Waverley (York-Edinburgh)

Observed B1 61019 at Heaton, a couple of J27s at Morpeth, and K1s 62025/62030 at Alnmouth. Noted D5300 and V2 60944 during the stop at Berwick. As we approached Edinburgh a couple of North British 0-6-0s 64561/64595 were spotted at work. Passing St Margarets shed I recorded A1 60142, and B1s 61242/61245.

After arrival at Waverley we headed out to Haymarket depot, and got permission from the office to go round. There were two A4s inside the shed, 60012/60024 but not in steam. Preserved Glen 256 (ex BR 62469) was alongside the A4s. The only other steam there was A1 60159 and three B1s. On the diesel side there were two Deltics, three Peaks, five EE Type 4s and five BRCW Sulzer Type 2s.

Over at St Margarets, apart from diesel shunters, it was all steam. A1 60161, and three A3s 60037/60041/60101 were the pick of the bunch. Also noted were seven V2s, fifteen B1s and nine NB 0-6-0s, including 65224 Mons and 65243 Maude. Withdrawn Y9 0-4-0ST 68095, and N15s 69128/69138 were stored out of use.

On arriving back at Waverley station, I recorded A3 60085 leaving on a local to Berwick. We had planned to travel back on the up North Briton, so had couple of hours wait at Waverley. Recorded A3 60040, A4 60016, and half a dozen EE Type 4s while there.

There was a relief to the North Briton, advertised to depart at 17:00, and when A1 60124 Kenilworth appeared light engine to couple onto the stock we quickly changed platforms to catch it.

A1 60124 17:00 Edinburgh Waverley-Newcastle (Edin-York relief)

We departed on time, and then had a fast run along the ECML behind a Pacific in good condition. At Berwick two A1s 60116/60127 and A3 60096 were noted at Tweedmouth shed, and another K1 62021 was seen at Alnmouth. Arrival at Newcastle was around five minutes early.

A Merrymaker to the seaside...

In it rolled from Heaton with a Peak on the front. Not what we were expecting. One 40 basher rejected the train outright. This proved not to have been a good move.

45023 Newcastle - Leeds 1Z94

Hello, what's this? The Wagon has been removed! And look what is taking its place...

40044 Leeds - Llandudno 1Z94
40044 Llandudno - Newcastle 1Z94

A memorable day out.

It was over 39 years before I returned to Llandudno while on holiday last year.

10th April 1994

Heading back home after Easter...

91021 Newcastle - Doncaster
47830 Doncaster - Derby

What a fantastic day out! I sometimes wish I'd been born ten years earlier. Were the Alnwick branch locos changing over when you passed through Alnmouth on the outward journey, or was one of those K1s on a freight trip - from Shilbottle or Whittle Collieries perhaps?

Slightly OT, but my wife did a day trip from Harrogate to Newcastle and back (via Ripon both ways) with her primary school in June 1966 - probably also travelling on the North Briton in at least one direction - making copious notes en route. She still has the notebook and in it is clearly written: "Ferryhill - steam engine no. 62011"!

The K1 workings at Alnmouth are lost in the mists of time. My notebook, like your wife’s at Ferryhill, just states 62025/62030 at Alnmouth. However our outward train had an Alnmouth stop, and a timetable connection for Alnwick, so one of the K1s was most likely working the branch.

K1s were regularly working Dolomite traffic from Thrislington, to Steetley at Hartlepool in 1966, so would be seen almost daily at Ferryhill in June 1966. Well spotted young lady.

Yes looking back, the Edinburgh trip was a good day out. I posted it without including sightings seen on arrival back at Newcastle. So just to add; a Kings Cross-Edinburgh relief arrived behind D1510, which was replaced by A2 60522. The Brush’s arrival caused great excitement as it was the first Duff any of us had seen (nickname was still years in the future), and I actually circled it in my notebook as the highlight of the day!!

I echo D6130's sentiments. Oh to have been travelling around 15 - 20 years earlier!

Meanwhile, here are some more of my ramblings:
Monday 11/04/77
There was a "Holiday Preview" special advertised from York to Portsmouth Harbour. This coincided with my former colleagues and friends in the Reading Youth Orchestra being on their annual Easter residential course in Portsmouth, so I bought a ticket, and decided I'd hop off on the way home to stay with my parents in Reading:
47017 0605 York – Portsmouth Harbour via Selby, Leeds, Moorthorpe, Sheffield avoider, Reading West Curve, Eastleigh.
After seeing my friends rehearsing in Portsmouth, it was time to head back again:
47017 1745 Portsmouth Harbour – Basingstoke
DEMU Basingstoke – Reading
DMU Reading – Tilehurst
I alighted at Basingstoke during the crew change there. At Tilehurst I presented my excursion ticket and offered to pay from Basingstoke, but the kindly station master ( who knew me well from my many days of trainspotting there) waved me through without charge.

Tuesday 11/04/78
47502 1555 York – Leeds
46043 1706 Leeds – York

Friday 11/04/80
Still on my Darlington 3D ticket, hunting for 40s in Scotland, I had overnighted to Newcastle. I was delighted when 40047 arrived on the 2000 Kings Cross – Aberdeen, but delight turned to despair as they immediately uncoupled it … only to turn to joy as they replaced it with low mileage 40158 instead!
40158 0101 Newcastle – Edinburgh
At Edinburgh the question of what to do next was easily solved, as (unusually) the 0435 to Glasgow Queen Street was also a 40:
40160 0435 Edinburgh – Glasgow Queen Street via Falkirk Grahamston
Breakfast at Queen Street, along with some gen gathering, then off we go:
47707 0735 Glasgow Queen Street – Edinburgh via Falkirk Grahamston
40148 0850 Edinburgh – Dundee
40060 1115 Dundee – Glasgow Queen Street
47271 1335 Glasgow Queen Street – Stirling
40060 banker to Cowlairs
40158 1417 Stirling – Glasgow Queen Street
40060 1535 Glasgow Queen Street – Stirling
40160 1612 Stirling – Glasgow Queen Street
27040 1654 Glasgow Queen Street – Perth
20101 banker to Cowlairs
40158 1843 Perth – Montrose
40060 2016 Montrose – Edinburgh
This was the 1925 Aberdeen – Kings Cross. We were 40' late into Edinburgh due to a temporary loco failure at Arbroath, and police searching the train for a missing woman at Kirkcaldy. The 40 came off at Edinburgh and was replaced by 55011, so I stuck with it to do the Newcastle overnight for the second night in succession.
55011 2250 Edinburgh – Newcastle

Saturday 11/04/81
There was a weekend block at Rugby due to remodelling, so there were additional Paddington to Birmingham services running. First there was the overnight to contend with, namely the Down Midnight for the Up Midnight:
50028 0002 Paddington – Bristol Temple Meads via Bristol Parkway
50037 0335 Bristol Temple Meads – Paddington via Bath Spa
50022 0755 Paddington – Wolverhampton via Coventry
50022 1130 Wolverhampton – Paddington via Coventry
50044 1425 Paddington – Plymouth via Westbury
A day very heavy on 50 mileage.

Friday 11/04/86
I had done the overnight out of Queen Street intending to cover the Inverness – Aberdeen line, on which several 37s had been active in the previous days:
47630 0110 Perth – Inverness
47546 0502 Inverness – Elgin
That wasn't quite the start I had hoped for, but it improved from there:
37260 0647 Elgin – Inverness
37260 0832 Inverness – Aberdeen
37260 1140 Aberdeen – Inverness
The 1432 to Aberdeen was a 47, but the 1430 to Edinburgh had required 47222 piloting 47634, so I did a fill-in to Aviemore with that:
47222 + 47634 1430 Inverness – Aviemore
47593 1630 Aviemore – Inverness
The 1732 to Aberdeen produced a 37 as expected, but surprisingly not 37260 this time:
37421 1732 Inverness – Aberdeen
37421 2055 Aberdeen – Inverness
After the Lord Mayor's Show comes the dustcart:
47630 2330 Inverness – Stirling

Tuesday 11/04/89
37426 1203 Crewe – Hereford
37407 1425 Hereford – Crewe

Sunday 11/04/93
During our family Easter break, I was again granted a few hours remission and another Domestic Exit Visa for continued satisfactory behaviour, so I set off to the West Somerset Railway once more:
3205 1120 Washford – Minehead
3205 1210 Minehead – Washford
These two brief runs are the only time I've had 3205 for haulage. It is currently awaiting an expensive overhaul at the South Devon Railway, so it may be some time before we see it active again.

SUNDAY 11th APRIL 1976:

A very long day out from Hampshire to take in WCML Settle & Carlisle diversions. The day started with me cadging a lift to Guildford on the Petersfield newspaper empties, on which I was already a semi-regular unofficial passenger when covering Sunday early turns in Guildford booking office. To start the day off in fine style, it was worked by required-for-haulage 74 008, which made short work of the Direct Line gradients with only one coach and three vans in tow.

74 008 06 00 Petersfield-Guildford (ECS)
7829 07 00 Guildford-Waterloo via Cobham
86 235 Euston-Preston
47 480 Preston-Carlisle via Blackburn, Hellifield and Appleby
86 244 Carlisle-Euston
7343/7052/7339 Waterloo-Petersfield

This was my first trip over the Preston-Blackburn-Hellifield route (in those far-off pre-Baker days, to be yellow penned on the three part folding BR network maps, which I still have). Respected railway author David Jenkinson - an authority on all things Settle & Carlisle - was on board and, with the co-operation of the guard, delivered a running commentary over the PA about the historical, engineering, architectural and scenic features of the route. I, of course, found this fascinating....but it must have been annoying for some of the normals, especially those who were trying to sleep! Come to think of it, I suspect that it may have been arranged officially by BR as part of the S & C centenary celebrations.

TUESDAY 11th APRIL 1978:

Yet another after-work Crompton bash out of Waterloo:

7810/7802/7710 Petersfield-Waterloo (06 23 from Portsmouth Harbour)
5675/5784.5684 08 06 Waterloo-Wimbledon (to Chessington South)
4650/4621 Wimbledon-Waterloo (17 56 from Shepperton)
33 027 19 00 Waterloo-Woking (to Exeter SD. Consist: W5489/5492/5457/14080/14069/1772/3087/5363 Load 8 AB/EH)
7801/5123 Woking-Guildford (18 52 Waterloo-Guildford)
7395/7809 Guildford-Petersfield (19 20 Waterloo-Portsmouth Harbour)

SATURDAY 11th APRIL 1981:

Having overnighted at my parents' place, I had time for a leisurely late breakfast before heading back into Glasgow at lunchtime:

37 108 13 19 Garelochhead-Glasgow QS HL (07 00 from Mallaig. Consist: SC80735/1852/14009/4201/4249/4134 Load 6 VB/SH)
303 024 Glasgow QS LL-Hyndland (14 07 Airdrie-Milngavie)

Six years ago today I was in Madrid therefore I would have likely travelled with a vehicle on rails of some description.

Not all days produced a 40:
46048 1706 Leeds – York
47051 1735 York – Leeds
46038 1906 Leeds – York

Thursday 12/04/79
55014 1140 York – Doncaster via Selby
47413 1241 Doncaster – York via Selby
55019 1413 York – Doncaster via Selby. This departed 5' late, then ground to an ignominious squealing halt under Holgate bridge, stopping the job. The brakes were binding, so the second man and the guard had to walk along the track and pull the strings on every coach. It just happened to be pouring with rain, so they got utterly drenched.
55013 1459 Doncaster – York via Selby
55022 1557 York – Doncaster via Selby. This was a relief train from Newcastle to Kings Cross, but no timings appeared in the Easter Supplement for it.
47415 1655 Doncaster – Leeds via Viaduct
40019 1809 Leeds – Huddersfield. This was a Durham – Manchester Victoria relief.
45047 1834 Huddersfield – York, 10' late arriving due to platform congestion at York.

Saturday 12/04/80
I had arrived at Newcastle behind 55011, and wanted to head back towards Edinburgh. I didn't have too long to wait:
55008 0148 Newcastle – Edinburgh
There was a bit if an early morning fester (aka breakfast and a shower) at Edinburgh before the 2315 Kings Cross – Aberdeen arrived, with 47526 dragging failed 47422. Thankfully both engines were replaced by something more to my taste:
40060 0700 Edinburgh – Arbroath
47120 1051 Arbroath – Dundee
27014 1138 Dundee – Perth
27101 1212 Perth – Dundee
40060 1507 Dundee – Glasgow Queen Street
47411 1735 Glasgow Queen Street – Stirling
DMU Stirling – Falkirk Grahamston
47709 1930 Falkirk Grahamston – Edinburgh
At Edinburgh, I struck lucky once more:
40028 2040 Edinburgh – Darlington
Meanwhile, at Croft, 55016 was keeping the local fire brigade in business by doing a passable spontaneous self-incineration job. This delayed the 2000 Kings Cross – Aberdeen by sufficiently long that I was able to leap out at Darlington for it (continued tomorrow)…

Sunday 12/04/81
50011 1645 Plymouth – Paddington via Westbury. This was booked to be diverted via Bristol, but the engineering work finished early, so we ran via Westbury, calling additionally at Bedwyn, Hungerford, Kintbury and Newbury in lieu of the replacement bus service.

Saturday 12/04/86
The previous day I had spent behind 37s on the Inverness – Aberdeen line. Today it was the turn of the West Highland Line:
37409 0437 Stirling – Glasgow Queen Street
The target for the day was the 0905 Glasgow Queen Street – Fort William ADEX, so I did a fill in move to Edinburgh and return for the doss:
47709 0700 Glasgow Queen Street – Edinburgh
47709 0800 Edinburgh – Glasgow Queen Street
37178 0905 Glasgow Queen Street – Fort William
37405 1405 Fort William – Mallaig
37405 1550 Mallaig – Fort William
37178 1825 Fort William – Glasgow Queen Street

Wednesday 12/04/89
43130 + 43032 1106 Crewe – Wolverhampton
87010 1115 Wolverhampton – Birmingham New Street
My target for the day was new haulage from a shiny new 90:
90027 1248 Birmingham New Street – Coventry
310 063 Coventry -Birmingham New Street
87021 1412 Birmingham New Street – Crewe (and home to bed).

Basically, an 86 is a 47 with a pantograph. The tat that bowled you out when you were hoping for or expecting something better.
Easy tiger. Enough of that talk. Thats almost blasphemy:D
I've been reading reading a lot of anti duff sentiments on this thread, mostly giggling in truth. Your allowed your opinions, one mans rubbish, is another mans gold an all that. I genuinely do feel.your pain if your waiting for a 40 or 37 and an ETH Duff rolls round the corner. I know of that feeling myself, it's the pits and I like a duff. Only difference is I could stomach it a damn sight easier. Keep these tales rolling. They're an excellent read.

SUNDAY 12th APRIL 1981:

Glasgow Queen Street High Level was closed due to engineering works and Aberdeen, Inverness and Edinburgh services were running in and out of Central via Rutherglen, Coatbridge Central and Cumbernauld:

303 028/021 Hyndland-Glasgow QS LL (10 10 Helensburgh Central-Airdrie)
47 272 11 25 Glasgow Central-Dundee (to Aberdeen. Consist: SC4903/14059/5226/5212/5215/5150/1857/14055 Load 8 VB/DH)
47 517 14 xx Dundee-Glasgow Central (13 00 from Aberdeen. Consist: SC14099/13413/1842/5203/5149/5191/9416/4915 Load 8 VB/DH)
314 216 Glasgow Central LL-Partick (16 xx Motherwell-Dalmuir)
303 017 Partick-Hyndland (16 30 Airdrie-Helensburgh Central)

This was the infamous occasion when - on the outward journey - our train was struck by an open door on an Edinburgh-Glasgow Mark 3 push-pull service passing in the opposite direction a short distance North of Cumbernauld....causing considerable damage to TSO SC4903 and BFK SC14059, which had to be locked out-of-use following examination at Stirling. The consequent delay ate up our planned pub lunch stop in Dundee and my friend and I had to resort to buffet car sandwiches instead. I have described this incident more fully on another thread in the past.

TUESDAY 12th APRIL 1983:

I was staying with friends in Ireland for ten days and on this date, through contacts in CIE, I was very kindly invited to ride on a couple of test runs with the then newly-delivered, German-built original DART electric units:

132+131 Bray-Dublin Connolly (07 45 from Rosslare Harbour)
Car: Dublin Connolly-Howth (courtesy of CIE)
8302/8102 Howth-Sutton and return (test run - riding in cab on return journey)
8302/8102+8301/8101 Howth-Howth Junction and return (test run - riding in cab on outward journey)
229 Howth Junction-Dalkey (15 06 Drogheda-Dalkey)
160 Dalkey-Bray (16 12 Howth-Bray)

Things were so much more relaxed in Ireland in those days!

Sunday 13/04/80
I had alighted at Darlington off 40028, and stepped straight onto the delayed 2000 Kings Cross – Aberdeen. Slightly worryingly, 40065 was at the sharp end, on a mere load 14.
40065 0006 Darlington – Edinburgh via Pelaw, King Edward Bridge, Scotswood, Carlisle.
I had previously encountered this loco on 08/04/80, when it suffered loss of power near Berwick. Well, this wasn't exactly a sparkling run either – and it gradually deteriorated. Obviously the driver wasn't too keen on the performance either, as we stopped at Beattock to get assistance from the bank locos to help us over the summit:
20124 + 20137 05xx Beattock – Summit (on rear)
Then at Carstairs there was another pause, as 47701 was attached to the front to pilot us over Cobbinshaw and into Edinburgh:
47701 06xx Carstairs East Junction – Edinburgh (piloting 40065).
All told, a delay of 67 minutes was quite good going. It could have been a lot worse. That was the only occasion on which I'd ever had the Beattock Bankers on my train.
40049 0810 Edinburgh – Perth via Ladybank
This was a through service to Inverness, and I would have loved to continue with the 40 all the way, but my limited validity and empty pockets wouldn't allow it.
47273 1006 Perth – Dundee
47271 1113 Dundee – Perth
27002 1306 Perth – Dundee
40158 1433 Dundee – Glasgow Queen Street
47271 1645 Glasgow Queen Street – Dundee
40060 1907 Dundee – Larbert
27012 2059 Larbert – Perth
25244 2206 Perth – Dunblane
The 25 was on load 8, and was thrashed mercilessly, but it couldn't take the pace, and shut down entirely on the approach to Dunblane, where we arrived at a gentle pace in total silence. That prompted me to alight there, as I didn't want to be stranded in the middle of nowhere with a deceased rodent. They restarted it after several noisy and smoky attempts, and it staggered off into the night …
47461 2310 Dunblane – Mossend
… and thus another Carlisle overnight beckoned …

Thursday 13/04/00
A team meeting in Retford, involving an overnight stay. I decided to go via Doncaster:
91006 1540 Kings Cross – Doncaster
90033 1735 Doncaster – Retford
90033 was new for haulage – hence my diversion via Doncaster.

My favourite Hoover again...

50035 Padd - Slough 1F76

I think this was returning from a work trip to High Wycombe. Not the most direct route to get there from Slough - didn't there used to be a through line from Bourne End to High Wycombe?

13th April 1990

A day entirely spent between Brum and Wolves, with the highlight at the start:

85030 New St - Wolves 1S85 (later to be boarded by @Graeme.Hutchis at Stafford)

The rest of the day involved:

90017, 90012, 86243, 86424, 86231, 86243, 90027

Someone must have hidden all the 87s.

13th April 1991

On my way to beer and football...

86416 New St - Waverley

Hearts 1 Aberdeen 4

At least I enjoyed the beer!

MONDAY 13th APRIL 1981:

The Brechin branch was about to close and I was fortunate enough to be able to obtain a brake van permit to ride on it the following day. Today I travelled to Montrose and spent the night in a B&B - at my own expense - as there wasn't a train from Glasgow early enough in the morning to connect with the trip freight, which operated from Dundee.

303 042 Hyndland-Glasgow QS LL (08 01 Milngavie-Airdrie)
47 273 17 35 Glasgow QS HL-Montrose (to Aberdeen. Consist: SC1853/9389/5159/5125/5139/13382/9383 Load 7 VB/DH)

WEDNESDAY 13th APRIL 1983:

It was a fine Spring morning on the East Coast of Ireland, where I was staying with friends, so I decided to take a train from Bray to Greystones and then walk back along the cliff path above the railway....taking some photos en route:

I had arrived at my parents' home in Reading by using a York to Portsmouth ADEX. Now it was time to return home to York, and fortunately there was another ADEX which fitted the bill perfectly:
47248 0825 Reading – York via Solihull, Saltley, Derby, Beighton Jn., Cudworth.

Friday 14/04/78
DMU Leeds – Skipton
45015 1514 Skipton – Leeds
DMU Leeds – Sheffield (route not recorded)
45059 1738 Sheffield – Leeds (route not recorded)
46023 1906 Leeds – York
40078 1925 York – Leeds
DMU Leeds – Selby
47107 2116 Selby – York

Monday 14/04/80
Still on the hunt for 40s in Scotland, I was on another Carlisle overnight:
86019 0014 Mossend – Carlisle
81020 0232 Carlisle – Mossend
This was the Fort William / Inverness overnight, and the 81 was new for haulage. I got myself a seat in the Fort William portion:
40033 0422 Mossend – Cowlairs via Gartsherrie South Jn., Gartcosh Jn., Springburn
26030 0444 Cowlairs – Glasgow Queen Street
I made enquiries as to the day's loco allocations, and decided I had to make the Inverness trip at last:
40078 0905 Glasgow Queen Street – Inverness
This was 30' late due to the preceding Glasgow Queen Street – Dundee stopper encountering some difficulties, and then lost path on the Highland Main Line.
40078 1445 Inverness – Perth
40080 1822 Perth – Dundee
40184 1915 Dundee – Glasgow Queen Street
A superb day for 40s, with some rare track done on the overnight from Mossend to Cowlairs, and a round trip over the Highland Main Line in daylight. I decided I'd head over to the East Coast for my overnight tonight.
47709 2105 Glasgow Queen Street – Edinburgh via Falkirk Grahamston
I strolled over to see what was on the front of the 2230 Edinburgh – Kings Cross. What – you must be kidding me?. Surely this is some kind of sick joke. Maybe it's just doing some shunting or something …
31181 2230 Edinburgh – York
Load 14, the heaviest overnight passenger train on the ECML, and it gets a damned Goyle! (The reason – I found in later years – was that this specific train was worked by Gateshead crews, so any loco which the Haymarket crews couldn't handle would almost inevitably end up on this train, regardless of its ability to keep time). The loco was worked absolutely flat out, and lost 45 minutes to Newcastle, and a further hour to York, where – thankfully – it was replaced by something more suitable to the task …

Friday 14/04/89
There was some manner of railfreight exhibition taking place at Cricklewood:
86431 0711 Crewe – Euston
EMU KX Thameslink – Cricklewood and return
86253 1250 Euston – Crewe

Friday 14/04/00
After the team meeting in Retford, it was time to return to London. No class 90 for me this time, alas:
91026 1550 Retford – Kings Cross

Did you manage to achieve similar on the Faslane branch prior to it closing?
Sadly not. By the time it closed at the end of 1983, I had moved South again and was training to be a guard at Brighton. It would probably have been very difficult to arrange and would have involved a lot of security faff....and definitely no photography allowed! I did, however, manage to do a brakevan trip with a couple of enthusiast colleagues on the Fraserburgh branch, shortly before its closure in 1979. I haven't yet found my record of that trip, but I do recall that the motive power was 26 042.

FRIDAY 14th APRIL 1978:

Another after work Crompton bash from Waterloo:

7831/7835/7802 Petersfield-Waterloo (06 23 from Portsmouth Harbour)
5109/5131 08 12 Waterloo-Wimbledon (to Effingham Junction)
4621/4662 Wimbledon-Waterloo (17 56 from Shepperton)
33 014 19 00 Waterloo-Woking (to Exeter SD. Consist: W5363/3087/1772/14069/14080/5457/5492/5489 Load 8 AB/EH)
7820/7738 Woking-Petersfield (19 20 Waterloo-Portsmouth Harbour)

TUESDAY 14th 1981:

Up with the lark in My B&B in Montrose - too early for breakfast, but the kindly landlady provided me with plenty of sandwiches in lieu - and down to the station. I had hoped pick up the Dundee-Laurencekirk-Brechin trip freight in the platform, but in the event it was looped to allow a Kings Cross-Aberdeen overnight to overtake. Into the down loop trundled 26 008, hauling 23 MCVs full of Aglime and for Laurencekirk (where, at this time, the goods yard was still open, but the passenger station was still closed) and a brake van. On arrival the MCVs were shunted into the yard for unloading and we picked up an empty Interfrigo van bound for Chiasso on the Swiss/Italian border and empty VVV and 15 empty Aglime MCVs. These were taken back to the yard at Montrose and left there, while we picked up five Procor 32.9 tonne air-braked Aglime hoppers for Brechin. As the loco was not air braked, we had to pull the strings and work them unfitted....with the added novelty of an (authorised) three mile propelling move along the Down Main to Kinnaber Junction, before entering the Brechin branch. After shunting the wagons at Brechin, the crew decided that they were in severe danger of exceeding their eight hour shift and the driver didn't want to work overtime....so it was decided to leave the empty wagons - and the brake van - at Brechin, to be collected the following day and hot foot it back to Dundee light engine. As is usual on these occasions, I had offered to help with the shunting - mainly by pulling the hand points in the three yards - and was rewarded for my efforts by being invited into the front cab of the loco for the return journey. My main memory is of the loco hunting madly from side to side as we hurtled along the straight and level between Arbroath and Dundee at 80 mph plus!

26 008 Montrose-Laurencekirk (riding in brake van)
26 008 Laurencekirk-Montrose (riding in brake van)
26 008 Montrose-Kinnaber Junction (riding in brake van - propelling)
26 008 Kinnaber Junction-Brechin (riding in brake van)
26 008 Brechin-Kinnaber Junction (reverse)-Dundee (riding in rear cab to Kinnaber Junction, then front cab to Dundee)
47 711 Dundee-Glasgow QS HL (11 50 from Aberdeen. Consist: SC9708/11004/12019/12028/12031/12016/1857 Load 7 AB/EH. Loco propelling)
303 022 Glasgow QS LL-Hyndland (14 37 Airdrie-Milngavie)
303 033 Hyndland-Glasgow QS LL (15 25 Milngavie-Airdrie)
37 027 16 35 Glasgow QS HL-Dumbarton Central (to Mallaig. Consist: SC4099/3817/4132/14095/1852/80735 Load 6 VB/SH)
303 071/018 Dumbarton Central-Hyndland via Yoker (16 52 Helensburgh Central-Airdrie)

Finished the day off nicely with a quick spin behind a 37, but I couldn't go any further than Dumbarton as I had something - can't remember what - on in the evening.

THURSDAY 14th APRIL 1983:

Still on holiday in Ireland:

215 15 43 Bray-Dublin Connolly (to Howth)
123+128 Dublin Pearse-Bray (18 20 Dublin Connolly-Rosslare Harbour)

I think a pint or three of Guinness may have been consumed en route between Connolly and Pearse stations, but my memory is hazy!
