Paul, that'd be a bit different having the Orient Express turning up at Prestbury instead of a Northern Rail Class 323. I'd love to see it happen! Maybe they'd roll out the red carpet for you and Patricia.

Obviously those dodgy implants that needed urgent removal that were in the news last year then...

It's still an ongoing issue I believe. Not sure if its the PIP ones but wasn't there a brand that have had their "kitemark" removed recently ?

It does raise the issue of responsible advertising. Google analytics may be all singing and dancing but due to its nature its moral compass is skewed somewhat. I like looking at boobies but targeted ads for breast removal makes my spidey sense tingle.

As posted. Mine are blocked. Yes, I have a tinfoil hat placed firmly on my head but I don't appreciate data harvesting and targeted advertising.

BTW I'm looking for a New car, Deep fat fryer, Birthday presents, Bathroom fittings, New tellybox and Christmas gifts for family. Hit me with your best shot.

I've only noticed the advert in question SINCE this thread appeared, my usual seem to be for a Hotel in Taunton which ironically I used to work for, or for an assortment of car dealerships around Yorkshire (so the ad-folks are doing something right)...

But I've just now had an advert for a candidate in an Argentine election, I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do with that... I don't even speak Spanish!

NB: With regard to adblockers, I'm on an android device so unsurprisingly that isn't an option. Even when on a PC, I deactivate adblockers on sites (such as this and other forums) where I feel that the revenue is deserved/needed and the ads aren't too invasive.

There are ways but they usually require your device to be rooted so you can modify the /etc/hosts file

As for adverts I don't get many funny ones :(

I notice that I'm now seeing adverts for breast augmentation. I wonder if this has anything to do with my contributing to a thread with 'breast augmentation' in the title

They are available without any rooting or jailbreaking.

I have no objection to advertising per se but I don't like the whole targeted ads that are based on your browsing history. That I find invasive. I value my privacy and outright object to data harvesting.

I like static banners and affiliate links where it is my choice to click through. I also like sponsors and I'm more inclined to click through from a forum and offer my support that way. If there were affiliate and sponsor links to railway based stuff then revenue may even increase as the enthusiasts on here regularly travel and enthusiasts are easily parted with their cash. The trip planning section is filled with suggestions but just the one sticky for rail cottages. It would be perfect for well thought out banners and affiliate links. Hell, people are going to that section specifically to part with cash and plan trips etc. Opportunity lost tbh.

I actually prefer targeted ads - if I'm going to see ads they might as well be for things I'm interested in.

The issue I have is that often adverts will be for something I've looked at, but have no interest in. Example, I bought a new fridge and then had Curry's and other retailers adverts for white goods for weeks.

Clearly the way these ads are selected needs a bit of work, then: if you've just bought a fridge you hopefully won't need another for the next decade! Then again, if we're all railway enthusiasts who's to say there aren't fridge enthusiasts out there? ;)

I keep getting similar ads, often for the exact item that I've just bought. I don't mind if it is sponsoring the website, but the advertisers are most likely wasting their money (or, worse still, their clients' money).

I have that with Amazon. Their ads and suggestions often show me the exact item I just bought.

I don't have any specific objection to websites offering good and services of their own based on my shopping habits on that site. I'm there to shop so I expect advertising. I'm a loyal customer so it serves to keep that loyalty.
