How would you serve the 3 stations at the Manchester end that currently have a limited service- Trafford Park, Humphrey Park and Chassen Road? Leave them with 1tp2h or enhance to hourly or better?

By making one of the current semi-fast trains slower (e.g. the Airport-Liverpool, calling at something like Flixton, Urmston, Irlam, Birchwood, Warrington Central, Warrington West, Hunts Cross and South Parkway), you give the extra stations faster links, but also create space for one of the existing stoppers to also be slower (as it now won't be caught up as quickly) so could possibly pick up these stations hourly.

I suggested a while ago for the present Southport-Hunts Cross Merseyrail services to be extended every 15 minutes daytime (30 minutes evenings) to Warrington Central, calling all stations. There would be a Warrington Central-Manchester Airport every 30 minutes calling all stations.

The existing Regional Express to Nottingham would remain as is, with the existing Man Airport limited stop being took over by TPE that would run to and from Cleethorpes via Sheffield and Doncaster (in other words running to and from Liverpool instead of Manchester Airport).

This would provide the smaller stations along the CLC route with a much improved service in terms of frequency, bearing in mind that it will not directly benefit from HS2 when it reaches Manchester.

Furthermore, it would go a long way to encourage better use of the smaller stations for local journeys, as for example somebody residing near Hunts Cross wanting to go east would at present be faced with a frequency of every 60 minutes with no Sunday service. That does not encourage people to leave the car at home and use public transport.

I did start a thread in the Speculative Ideas section a while ago, titled "Suggestion: Extend Southport-Hunts Cross to Warrington Central " or words similar to that if anyone wants to read further.

I suspect unless you give them at least half-hourly they'll be about as well-patronised as the likes of Mauldeth Road etc and people will just take the bus. An hourly urban service is just pointless.

That's another option - Merseyrail and Metrolink to meet at Warrington. If you want a fast to Manchester there's always Bank Quay, and the Nottingham could either be curtailed to Manchester or run via Chat Moss instead. OK, the people of Warrington would get a slower service from Central but I reckon the idea of 5 trams per hour and direct access to the city centre could be popular.

You'd basically swap the platforms at Hunts Cross over, and put on a half hourly EMU serving Edge Hill, Mossley Hill, West Allerton, LSP and Hunts Cross, terminating in what is presently the Merseyrail bay.

These solutions will all lengthen the journey time from Warrington to Manchester, which is a mistake when Warrington Central is by far the busiest intermediate station on the line, and much of its traffic is to Manchester. There should be at least one non-stop from Warrington to Manchester per hour. The journey time for this is only 16 minutes plus any recovery or pathing time. You can't get anywhere close to this time by using Bank Quay. That's a much longer route with difficult junction conflicts.
