So this was a fun little idea I had in light of the thread about how PA announcers are chosen where there was mention of Patrick Stewart and David Attenborough. So with that in mind, I thought it'd be a little fun to have a thread where we post ideas for celebrities we would like to hear do railway announcements, be it at stations or on trains. This isn't entirely unknown since Virgin Trains once managed to get Will Farrell to voice one of their talking toilets (that feels weird to say by the way), and Nicholas Briggs who provides the iconic voice of the Daleks and the Cybermen from Doctor Who once did a few fun station announcements at Slough. (If the link doesn't work for you, just type "Dalek station announcements" in YouTube and it should be the first result). So with that in mind, which celebrities would you like to personally hear do railway announcements? I look forward to hearing some of your ideas!

Alan Bennett for Northern. Harrogate, Halifax, Huddersfield and Hull would trip off his tongue rather well. He once did the Shipping Forecast which was rather good too.

I’d put in a vote for Jon Briggs who provided the narration for The Weakest Link and is also one of the voices for Siri. Clear, authoritative yet friendly. He’d be a good replacement for the late Phil Sayer.

Not really celebrity, but the Ditra announcements voiced by John Elgar (mainly on the Southern Region) and heard in the 1990s have, IMO, never been bettered since.

Morgan Freeman for me. I absolutely love the tone of his voice. I suppose his accent would rule him out for most people though.

I’ve never understood the Brian Blessed love in. To me he’s just an over the top professional shouter who plays on it at every opportunity. Aren’t loud invasive announcements something everyone seems to complain about?

Sadly Stanley Unwin died in 2002. I think he would have been appropriate considering the current state of Britain’s railways.

It's a shame Stephen Moore (Marvin the Paranoid Android) didn't voice any announcements in character before he died. He could have done the cancellation announcements. "Here am I, brain the size of a planet, and all they want me to do is tell you that the 11.04 to Shepperton has been cancelled... call that job satisfaction? Cause I don't..."

That would have been interesting!

In my fantasy world I would like to hear Peter Sellers. I wonder if he would use a different persona for every announcement. Perhaps one as Laurence Olivier as Richard III (see Peter's version of 'A Hard Day's Night', if you are unfamiliar).
