As many of us will be using rail to travel home for Christmas, and with the last trains being considerably earlier this year, I thought I'd start a thread for the last trains on said day. I'll kick it off with Avanti West Coast, who have just posted on Twitter their last trains for the day:

Last trains from London Euston to:
Birmingham: 13:08
Glasgow: 12:22
Liverpool: 12:34
Manchester: 12:48

Last trains to London Euston from:
Birmingham: 12:23
Glasgow: 10:40
Liverpool: 11:43
Manchester: 12:15

Yes, it really contrasts with LNER's last on the ECML:

Last trains from London Kings Cross to:
Aberdeen: 14:00
Edinburgh: 17:30
Newcastle: 19:30
Leeds: 20:03
York: 20:03

Last trains to London Kings Cross from:
Aberdeen: 09:52
Edinburgh: 16:00
Newcastle: 17:23
Leeds: 18:15 (ex Harrogate)
York: 18:32

Info was incorrect!

That doesn’t correspond with what LNER have published on their website. Last northbound train from Kings Cross is the 12.03 to Leeds. Last Edinburgh to Kings Cross is 08.00.

Details at https://www.lner.co.uk/travel-information/Industrial-action/

Southeastern shutting down at 15:00 on Xmas eve, last trains from London will presumably be much earlier than that

They use to run till 1900 i wonder if this is in response to industrial action from 1800 or because its a Saturday they don't have to worry about the office workers still in the pub.

I’d heard that it was due to the Network Rail industrial action. They need to set up the engineers possessions and get the engineers trains inside the possessions before the industrial action starts, hence the need to get the passenger trains off of the network by early/mid-afternoon.

They do have a big possession at Lewisham Jcn that needs delivering albeit SE new service has drastically reduced the use of the Jcn!

I believe last trains FROM London are around midday. Believe network shutdown is around 15:00 to enable NR to get set up for engineering works etc...

EMR - Northing because of a Unite strike as well as RMT.

The entire rail network is shutting down earlier than originally planned now because of the industrial action, nothing to do with office workers.

Please to see the planned work being protected and i suspect majority of staff will show up as well to collect the Xmas bonus so not sure what RMT think they've achieved here other than getting a load of negative press

Without getting involved in the rights and wrongs of the dispute it appears that passengers/farepayers can expect little or no service after midday on the 24th. Meanwhile RMT (and other front line staff not in dispute) rostered late turn will get Christmas Eve late afternoon/evening "off" on full pay. Thanks for that.

Travel home or anywhere on the 23rd at the latest everyone ;)

I'd booked a late train expecting to be able to argue the toss as it might have been tight as to whether it was going to run or not, but I've cut my losses and booked a coach and going to get an Uber the rest of the way. If I turn up at Leeds at 18:45 like I was planning to do, I imagine I'll find myself facing a locked station with no staff.

Funny, as my company still expect staff not in dissolute to attend for there shift! Wether that is late afternoon shift or into the late evening 9’ Xmas Eve.

Same at my company, even for those who live outside London and don't drive, as there's a "getting to work when there's no public transport if your problem" type clause in our Ts&Cs.

GWR has updated their page, and they say a full timetable will be in place on 24th Dec, however all journeys must be completed by lunchtime. Planners to be updated on 20th Dec for that day.

Well that contradicts Northern as they say there will be no trains to Wigan/Blackpool or Manchester Victoria on the 24th and the last train to Manchester Airport will be at 13.02.

Just checked - National Rail Enquiries will still sell tickets for services up to and including the 2016 Wigan and 2032 Manchester Airport.

Whether they RUN is another matter!

Have trains always closed down early on christmas eve? What was the 70s, 80s and 90s like under BR for xmas eve?

Was always the same from the very early 80s when I have worked there & before that when I lived opposite a station. Nothing much anywhere after 20:00 so everything could be put to bed in good time & much of the night shift could come in early so they where off home by 02:00 at the latest.
