Get ready to zap

York and Leeds get closer from Easter Sunday, 27 March as comfy, fast buses zap between the cities, quicker than ever before!

And you'll have no excuse not to try Cityzap - with all fares just £1 in the first week, and free travel for rail ticket holders until the end of April, everyone can get zapping about for little or nothing at all!
Buses fitted with zap-navs

Each Cityzap bus is fitted with a sat-nav so your driver can pick the quickest route between York and Leeds. So it's just like driving your car - only much better.

Zap every 30 mins

Cityzap runs around every 30 mins from first thing in the morning until around 7pm, with buses running into the evening and as late as 3am on Fridays and Saturdays. Sunday is a day of zapping too - every hour.
Coastliner is our friend

We work together with Coastliner to bring you departures every 15 mins from York or Leeds during the day, Mon-Sat, and every 30 mins on Sundays. You can also use your return or season ticket on Coastliner, and vice versa.

Zap to Leeds

We stop in Leeds bus station, convenient for all this great city has to offer - right next to Leeds Market, or just a 5 minute walk to Trinity Leeds and the Corn Exchange, or a few mins longer to City Square, train station, the Merrion Centre and First Direct Arena. Cityzap also stops at City Square after midnight.

Zap to York

As well as handy city centre stops at Stonebow, Bridge Street, Rougier Street and the train station, we also make handy stops along Tadcaster Road on our quick way in and out of the city, including at York College and York Racecouse.

Zap til late - really late!

On Fridays and Saturday nights, if you want to make it a late one, we're still zapping every hour to get you home. The last Cityzap from York is at 2am, and from Leeds it's at 3am. Plus we also include extra stops in Leeds around City Square to save your legs from the bars, and can drop you off in Tadcaster after midnight too - just ask the driver.

Zap in comfort

Mmm, leather! That's right - each Cityzap bus is full of comfy coach leather seats on board, well spaced out with a range of single and double seats upstairs.

Zap up with USB points

Charge up your phone or tablet, there's a free USB power point at every seat! Plus, of course, free 4G wifi to keep you connected.

The friendliest zappers around

Your personal Cityzap chauffeurs want to get to know you, and we want you to know them. They've been hand-picked and are dedicated to Cityzap - there to serve and keep you happy. And get you zapping along too, of course!

Zap on the app

This website and new Cityzap app (coming very soon on Google Play and the App Store) will keep you posted with live departure times from any stop of your choice. We've got to keep you moving!

You can also buy tickets the easy way on your mobile. Search for the Yorkshire Bus app on Google Play or in the App Store.

Once again, Tadcaster gets hard done too. Hone from 4 to 3 and now 2 buses an hour despite a decent 6 trains an hour between Leeds and York.

To be fair, Tadcaster isn't a very large town (population c.6000) so a 30 min service is probably fair.

The service pattern historically was a 30 min service on the Coastliner; was it the incursion by First and the response from Transdev that gave it the enhanced frequency?

As an observation, the historic pattern of other services was that the services out to Sherburn/Ponte were less frequent whilst the service to Wetherby was hourly (not the current handful of services) and even had a Sunday service IIRC

Tadcaster was traditionally served half hourly. When First attempted to compete, Transdev increased the service to 4 buses an hour. This was subsequently reduced to 3 buses an hour.

With the Cityzap, Tadcaster is going back to half hourly, but does have the extra Tadfaster bus on top of this.

Thanks - that was what I thought but, in truth, I couldn't remember

Seems a bit poor you can get picked up / dropped off at York rail station but can't do the same at Leeds rail station!

I wonder how popular it'll be after the short promotional period. As the idea of travelling from Leeds to York on a bus mid rush hour doesn't sound too appealing quite frankly!

This may have something to do with York Railway station being on the way in to the city centre, but Leeds station being beyond the centre (and probably needing an extra bus to add on the loop to the station).

Tadcaster will be served on request for setting down purposes on post midnight journeys. The service is to be worked by ex 36 Geminis 36 3608-3612 and their are to be launch events in York and Leeds on 19 and 20 March respectively. The other ex 36 Geminis 3601-3607 are going to Blackburn for use on the X41 and, reading between the lines, the displaced X41 vehicles will presumably be going to Burnley for use on the X43 Witch Way which is receive more vehicles as it is being extended every half hour to Skipton.

How many buses are needed for this service? I ask as the other day there were two 'non zap' vehicles in use (3613, which is a 36 'spare', and either 2763 or 2764).

Bargain fare of £1 each way until Saturday!

The service requires 4 buses each day (Mon-Sat), and 2 on a Sunday. The coy tweeted the other day that two of the Blues were away for "some urgent rectification work" but we're now back again. One was photographed in Keighley, so presumably the rectification work was carried out over there.

Given the amount of times 2708, 2709, 2763, 2764 and whatever B10BLEs were to hand had to substitute for 3601-3614 on the 36 there must be some issues with them which probably mean non City Zap vehicles will be a common sight.

Don't know the numbers which use this service but off peak the buses are very quiet. Getting 10+ is very rare, especially between 11 and 4.

Peak times they are slightly more busier so why not run via Tadcaster in the off peak as this would almost definitely increase passenfer numbers and avoid the likes of Copmanthorpe and Seacroft, would only add 3-4 minutes on the current CityZap services.

As soon as I saw you had posted in this thread, I knew it would be to suggest a Tadcaster stop ;)

To be fair, off-peak, you are right. But only if the timetable can handle it. Whenever I've done it, they spent too much time faffing around with the reversal at York.

Hahaha... we used to have up to 5/6 buses an hour to Leeds and York, now only 2 on the west and 1 from the east side.....

A very small amount of time when First were competing against Coastliner is the only time Tadcaster had such a frequency, it was always traditionally 2 buses per hour.

They have tweeted today
We've celebrated our 5,000th Cityzap journey and 66,000 customer journeys

So the average number of passengers is 13.2 !

Will be interesting to see what the Aug 28 timetable change is.

I find that very hard to believe. Rarely see them with more than 6/7 on during the day so must be well used in the morning and evening peaks. Been back in Yorkshire for 2 months now and was surprised with just how quiet they were. Surely reducing the service to one an hour and replacing one with a Coastliner to malton maybe wouldn't be to hard to do.

Surprised that it isn't busier. Price-wise it offers a much better walk-on fare than rail.

Very true, though numerous members of this forum (at least those who've attended the Yorkshire Meals and Fares Workshops) will use a much better value ticket than an overpriced York-Leeds ticket, and the comparison isn't quite so favourable then, especially given the journey time increase.

However if I am making a single journey, and not requiring to take my bike (I assume they won't take bikes!), then I would go with City Zap, as their single fares are much more reasonable.
