Hello all,

I'm wondering does anyone know what the current status is of the 5 car 378's? I'm planning on writing a scenario for the Railworks North London Line route, and will be based on RTT times from this week, but I don't know what 378's have 5 car's and which ones don't, is there a list available online?

Also, do they all have the 5 car logo's on the front and the wrapping vinyls, or is that applied on certain set's only?

Any help is much appreciated :)

James.

Reports elsewhere suggest that 378135-378154/378201-378226 are converted with 378227 at New Cross depot for conversion this week.

That leaves 378228-378234 and 378255-378257 still to be extended - ie 10 units.

The first use of a 5-car 378 on the Euston to Watford line has also been reported. Observations suggest that a 4-car 378 might still work East London Line services immediately (ie the day) prior to conversion.

Only selected units have the wrap on the 384xx car. All 5-car units have the 5-car notice on the front.

Thank you very much, very helpful responses as always :D

I didn't look at abrail, last time I tried that site it was down for a while and just assumed it had packed up altogether so was unaware it was back on, so thank you superalbs for the link :)

Cheers,

James.

I have noticed a small error on the abrail site, the 378 1** units are showing as all having an extra TSO added, that's incorrect, all 5 car units have had a MSO added.

I was just about to post the same query! :)

...also, shouldn't some of them have PTSO cars?

Yes they should, all the 378 1** should be TSO, the 378 2** should be PTSO

However according to the carriage end data plates, all the 378/1s have a PTOS, despite no pantograph being present.

Another potential problem with websites such as AB Rail, and various listing books AFAICT, is that they try and standardise the abbreviations for consistency, but I think both Bombardier and Siemens now use the designations ??OS rather than ??SO.

So should the manufacturer's designation be used, or some historical general purpose translation?

Yes they do, all of our manuals from Bombardier list the carriages as DMOS / MOS / PTOS / TOS etc. I just used the MSO way as it's more commonly known. The 378/1s are able to be converted very easily to AC/DC. If you stand on the bridge at Highbury & Islington, you can see that the TOS on each 378/1 can just have a pantograph put in. Underneath where the transformer goes there is just a massive slab of a weight to keep it the same should they end up converting them.

There is also no difference in the cabs whatsoever between a 378/1 and a 378/2.
