Class 395s are scheduled for a mid-life refurbishment

RailAdvent:
Class 395 Javelin trains are to be upgraded thanks to a new agreement between Eversholt Rail, Southeastern and Hitachi Rail.

The first phase of the project will take seven months and will include design, engineering and procurement.

The upgrade to the first of 29 trains will start in March 2023 at Southeastern’s depot in Ashford.

Javelin trains will receive the following as part of the project:

  • Full interior refresh, with new carpets, seating and a new seating layout
  • Live passenger information screens, with media screens coming in 2024
  • CCTV upgrade

Looks good in my opinion. Not too sure if mint green is the best choice but nonetheless a much needed refresh for these units.

People are getting taller, not shorter.
Not by very much now in the UK though.

From significant increases in average height through the late-19th and the 20th century, we've been falling in the height rankings for the past 20 years.

The point remains that reducing seat pitch is going against the trend.

That said - we won't know what's actually happened until we see more details.

The seats are not well aligned to the windows today. Do we know that they are increasing the density or reducing the pitch?
Not aligned to the window for one, but why would they change the layout other than to cram more seats in?

They mention replacing the actual seats, so it is I suppose possible they're cramming in an extra row without affecting pitch? Though with shorter sections that's very difficult to do.

I thought the layout was basically the same as the 350/1, which has most but not quite all seats aligned to a window in some form. Indeed, as they are now they just feel like super-fast 350/1s.

It's not hugely legible, but Figure 3 in this paper by Hitachi appears to show the original layout:

Press release from SouthEastern. A bit of a kick in the teeth for those on EM Connect where the refurb has allegedly been downgraded to save costs.

Javelin high speed trains get multi-million pound upgrade for Southeastern passengers

Javelin high speed trains get multi-million pound upgrade for Southeastern passengers: View of saloon-4

£27 million upgrade for very high speed passenger trains to begin in March 2023

Eversholt Rail, Southeastern and Hitachi Rail are delighted to announce they have signed an agreement to upgrade the Class 395 Javelin trains that provide high speed services between London St Pancras and Kent.
The upgrade will future-proof the UK’s only very high speed passenger fleet, which has already delivered record levels of reliability, passenger satisfaction and a £1 billion boost to the Kent tourism economy.
The initial phase of the project will take seven months and include design, engineering and procurement, with the upgrade to the first of the 29 trains commencing in March 2023 at Southeastern’s Ashford Depot.
The scope of the £27 million programme includes:
  • Full interior refresh, including new carpets and seats, with proposed new seating layouts to assist people with reduced mobility.
  • Live passenger information system (PIS) upgrade including media screens from 2024
  • CCTV system upgrade
  • USB at-seat charging
  • LED lighting installation
Significant upgrades to the interior – including new seats, LED lighting, USB charging, and a live passenger information system – will provide a real step change in the passenger experience. The upgrades are a clear demonstration of Southeastern listening to their passengers, and then giving them what they want and need to improve the overall passenger experience.
The upgrade of the trains also provides an excellent opportunity to install some of the latest digital solutions to help with passenger management and infrastructure monitoring. Eversholt Rail will be installing new CCTV, which combined with Hitachi Rail’s digital solutions, provides live passenger data on numbers and load weighting. Live and accurate data allows Southeastern to do more on passenger information, along with longer-term planning of passenger flow and maintenance.
The Javelin fleet will also be one of the first in the UK to install Hitachi Rail’s digital infrastructure monitoring technology. Exterior roof mounted high-definition cameras focused on the pantograph – the device that collects power from the overhead wires to power the train – will provide live monitoring of overhead lines and surrounding equipment. Utilising AI and trains in passenger services will create a modern trackside maintenance regime to deliver value for money.
Paul Sutherland, Client Services Director at Eversholt Rail said:
“We are delighted to be working in partnership with Southeastern and Hitachi Rail to deliver these upgrades to our Class 395 fleet. Our investment in this package of upgrades will ensure these high specification trains continue to provide the passengers on HS1 with a superior service.”
Mark Johnson, Engineering Director for Southeastern said:
“We’re proud to run the UK’s fastest domestic passenger services which have been crucial to the continued regeneration and prosperity of many places on our network, and we’re looking forward to
working with Eversholt Rail and Hitachi Rail to complete this upgrade across the entirety of the 140mph Javelin fleet, the fastest of their type in Britain. When finished, it will bring the fleet up to the very latest standards and ensure that standards of comfort, accessibility and information provision are as high as possible for our customers, improving the on-board environment for our customers who like to work or use personal devices when travelling with us”.
Jim Brewin, Head of UK & Ireland, Hitachi Rail said:
“We are delighted to be awarded this contract which is just reward for the hard work of the local Hitachi Rail team at Ashford. We now look forward to delivering on our commitments over the coming months and thank Eversholt Rail and Southeastern for close to 12 years of continued teamwork and collaboration on the Javelin Class 395, our flagship UK fleet.”

Those aren't new seats, they are the originals. Do they mean new seat covers and foams I guess?

So presumably the rejig is a minor one just to add priority seats if they don't currently have them?

It is to increase space for travellers of reduced mobility, yes.

By reducing it for everyone else, or by taking rows out? Let me guess...

People are getting taller, not shorter.

These trains are often very overcrowded, and average journey times will be relatively short, so a seating arrangement with class 700 type density might well be a good move.

I travel on these most days from Ramsgate to St Pancras. Looks like new seat covers and carpets, seat alignment doesnt seem to have changed. Passenger loading on the peaks are no where near where they were pre covid.

Did Javelins not have USBs from the start? They're only 12 years old!

The 395s get a refresh before the 376 and Networkers, which seems odd being one of the newest of the fleet types.

The Networkers won't get any attention as they're sending some off for storage or scrap and the 376 has never been touched except to add handrails.

i suppose 395s are a staple of southeastern’s fleet, bring their hallmark at “the only domestic high speed trains in the country” so probably want to make them more presentable than fleets that much more needed it

The 376s are planned a refurbishment. The ROSCO for the Networkers won't want to pay for any substantial refurbishment (at most seat covers and signage) unless they can be fairly sure of a long lease ahead, which seems unlikely.

Yes I got it in the neck from my neighbour yesterday, who was travelling to Ramsgate, and I'd directed him onto the 395 service, which he didn't even know existed. Not impressed at all, mainly because the train was "overcrowded, dirty, and the most boring journey you can imagine".

The problem with this service is that 6 cars doesn't seem quite enough, especially as there's been a constant attempt to heavily nudge people into using it in lieu of the 375 services. I'd take a 375 any day, they're so much more comfortable -- it's quite surprising Southeastern seem to keep their 375s in a pretty good state, yet the rest of the fleet is a right mess.

I can see the Networkers getting another decade in service.

They really need a lot more attention than the 395s if it came down to one or the other. They've barely been touched in 30 odd years

Could the new colour scheme be part of a new Southeastern brand? The colours are unlike anything we've had before on Southeastern. Perhaps a new livery as well?

An ungrateful man then, seeing as your advice would have saved him an hour or so each way.

The seating layout is already like that in the DPT with the big loo.

*15 years old. First unit arrived in 2007. A lot has changed in that time.

Depends if it was via Chatham or via Ashford. Via Chatham the journey time saving isn’t anywhere near an hour.

I prefer to travel Mainline from Ashford unless I have an onward connection from KGX/STP/EUS. Journey time from AFK-LBG via STP isn’t that much quicker than just getting the direct one and if it’s not a 12 car 395 I’d rather have an empty 8 car 375 than stand on a cramped 6 car 395 of a weekend.
