The old carriages would make decent waiting rooms!
It also shows no third rail!
Can't help wondering why they couldn't have just brought across a few D78s when they were withdrawn 3 years ago, if either SWT or the DfT had been more on top of the situation. It's not as if the interior and other changes for the mainland are actually needed for the IoW services, and the 4th to 3rd rail conversion would just follow the same process which was done on the 38 stock etc
I suspect it’s just far too early to draw conclusions from photoshopped colour schemes...It also shows no third rail!
Isn’t the Island Line train only train stop protected at a few relevant signals? Of course the £26m might fund a few changes...Be interesting to see where they base them selves for testing. I'd hazard a guess Eastleigh for mainline testing and certification. ( Will they now need to fit OTMR and AWS/TPWS as well ).
Was debunked fairly regularly in the original discussion in the main Island Line thread.Weren't there supposed to be some gauging issues with these? Was that debunked?
Yeah, that might have made the job a bit cheaper!
Fair enough - these posts come up so often it's difficult to keep track of what's real or not...Isn’t the Island Line train only train stop protected at a few relevant signals? Of course the £26m might fund a few changes...

Yes, the Island Line nor the 483s are fitted with AWS/TPWS so it would make sense to retain the tripcocks if indeed there are train stops fitted to any signals.Isn’t the Island Line train only train stop protected at a few relevant signals? Of course the £26m might fund a few changes...
It’s a minefield. Browsing the various threads, including the general 230 one, you’d find Adrian Shooter of Vivarail quoted saying they definitely fit, followed a few posts later by someone else saying he was wrong...Fair enough - these posts come up so often it's difficult to keep track of what's real or not...

What is the simplest possible signalling for a single line with one passing loop? Can you just have two tokens in a box at Brading? Does the IoW have GSMR or equivalent?
Well I was writing in the past tense about a situation that had developed over a number of years...I think it's pretty conclusive that if they *didn't* fit then they wouldn't have just announced an order

(Mind you, didn't SNCF make that exact mistake a while back? )

Nevertheless a good announcement that secures the future of the line. Though I wonder why the local Tory MP gets his name in lights - we couldn't be heading for an election could we?
I think it's currently timed to take around 24 minutes from end to end with two trains an hour, so granted that a full turn takes an hour you're talking only two out of the five they're getting. Not sure how possible it will be in the long run to up that frequently to three an hour instead? How many two car 484 units will be required for the Island Line service?
Theoretically 2 to operate a 2car 30minute service interval but they are appearly getting 5 suggesting 2x2car at busy times on services. How many two car 484 units will be required for the Island Line service?
How busy do (or can) they normally get?Theoretically 2 to operate a 2car 30minute service interval but they are appearly getting 5 suggesting 2x2car at busy times on services.
Pretty busy in holiday seasonHow busy do (or can) they normally get?
I doubt it.
it'll be a fairly basic (read cheap)option I'm sure.
they'll put in aircon but not mess around with control gear or motors.
no need for bogie mods on D78 stock.
it's a 750v/0v configuration they have, not a +420v/-210v
It's interesting that the 483s are advertised as having 84 seats for a 2-car set yet the 484s should have around 114 seats (assuming from Wikipedia) even though each carriage is only around 2.3m longer, and I believe that's with a toilet added in as well. We'll seePretty busy in holiday season
483s are all longitudinal seating aren’t they?
